Xbox 360 shmups

Post by Mokum »

I got to admit I browsed and searched the forum quite a lot and got so many informations about great shmups for my console. What I couldn't figure out is whether a game is playable on my pal console or not.

For example, I'm looking forward buying Mushihime-sama Futari and Espgaluda II because I've seen that they're playable by us Europeans even though they're Japanese titles.

So, are this and this really region free (I've read so) even though some eBay sellers say they're not?

For the same reason the "Top 25 shmups" chart half helped me and I'm still wondering what I should get :)

Last question: how good is Otomedius Excellent? It seems quite fun, even though it won't be remembered as the best shmup of all times ;)

Thanks all!

The two games you linked are region free, although I'd have thought you could get them cheaper.

I'm under the impression that Otomedius excellent is region locked.

All version of Futari (Platinum included) are region-free; all version of Galuda II EXCEPT the LE are region-free. Both the JP and US versions of Otomedius (which I'd classify as pretty average; get some of the better stuff on the system first), to the best of my knowledge, are region-locked.

Deff don't buy your import games from amazon. that's just asking to get ripped off.

I would suggest Play-Asia or the trading section of this very site.

A few other Region Free shmups you can import are Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets Combo Pack, Bullet Soul, and Eschatos.

Here is my personal affiliate link for play-asia if you want to go that route. http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-a120.html

Alternatively, you could just go to www.play-asia.com if you don't want to use my link.

You will most likely get the best deal if you just keep an eye on the trading section of this site. I just sold a copy of Mushihimesama Futari for 35$ and sold a copy of Galuda 2 for about the same not too long ago. They come up fairly often.

I'm going to second Casper's suggestion of Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets. They are region free, a good bit different from Cave's standard offerings, and are all around amazing shmups (especially MMP).

Don't forget that Dodonpachi Resurrection and Death Smiles are localized in Europe.

Yeah, I don't really like Amazon, but it seems like games on Play-Asia are out of stock (at least the MMP/PS bundle and Espgaluda II).

Bullet Soul and Eschatos seem really good games although they're a bit too much expensive for me right now.

I've already got both DDP Res and DS. I would like to get MMP/PS but I'm looking forward buying 2/3 titles at once to save on shipping but I have yet to find a site or an eBay seller having them :(

Ok, I've found someone selling all the titles I was interested in. I had some cash on my PayPal account from a Neo Geo AES sale and it turned into:

1. Espgaluda II 2 Black Label,
2. Mushihime-sama Futari Ver 1.5,
3. Muchi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets Limited Edition,
4. Eschatos,
5. Bullet Soul.

I guess I'll have fun for quite a lot of time ;)

Unless you got the LE for ESPGALUDA II, that's NTSC-J only. The RE on the other hand is region free.

It's not the LE, I know it's Jap only ;)

In the likely outcome of AKS being locked to PAL region I think it will hurt sales. There are surely a significant number of sales coming from people in the States buying the thus far semi-region free games that RSG have released.

AKS has the potential to sell quite well regardless, but it is dependent on price and promotion. Some people are obviously already sold on it, but the extra sales available from casual shmup enthusiasts is potentially quite large for a game of this artistic style. I think it fits into the western conception of what a shmup is stylistically.

Price will be key. The common selling price cannot be above £25. I actually think pricing DDP:R at £25 with most retailers was pushing it a bit; not because the game isn't worth that, but because casual players can't see the value in it. The number of times I have heard people say "seems more like an 800 point arcade game rather than a retail release" is priceless.

Promotion is important. The game has tons of intriguing artwork that can be used to splash pages of gaming magazines. If people know about the game, there is a reasonable chance they will buy it.

Deathsmiles was well promoted considering the sort of game it was. DDP:R I saw less promotion for. I hope that RSG can at least get AKS promoted and advertised in some mainstream publications if they believe that the cost is justified.

It certainly isn't easy, but let's keep the flamebait in the other thread.

I have to disagree. I can't 1CC it.

I love the game though, beautiful aesthetics, sweet soundtrack, lots of fun.

DTP can't 1CC futari and I can, I think he would have a harder time with SAK.

Indeed I can't. I can 5-boss Futari, and have only managed to get a stage 5 on AKS... But with AKS all the difficulty of the clear is in the last stage plus the twins and the final boss. The difficulty is "ok" until then, but it goes somewhat schizophrenic once you reach stage 5. It suffers from deathsmiles syndrome..... "comparatively" easy and then ridiculously hard in a very non-linear fashion.

Interesting to see whether I can 1cc AKS. Only Cave game I can 1cc at the moment is Deathsmiles and only when I don't enter suicide bullet mode..

You just made the most amazing purchase of your life, and then also got Bullet Soul.

You are in for a hell of a fun time.

Suggestions: Download Mushi Futari Black Label when you get the chance. It's a ton of fun. Also look into picking up Deathsmiles, you can probably find it for cheap in stores near you.

Rather forgettable game. Only buy this if you already own everything else mentioned here and have money to waste.
