I'm a HUGE mech fan. ...however I always end up finding mech video games to be missing something, that was until yesterday when I was playing FEAR 2 and came to the part of the game where you pilot a power armor. It was such a blast and absolute perfection of how a mech game should be. The only flaw was that it didn't last long enough. ...why oh why can't there be a full game like this. I've been waiting on Hawken forever, and who knows if it'll ever come out ...but come on FEAR team, do a spin off with nothing but mech combat!

Re: Absolute Perfection
You'll probably enjoy Lost Planet 2, it has a lot of different mechs and they behave like they would in real life. They are powerful but slow and clunky. Unfortunately you're stuck in 3rd person view.
Btw that Hawken game looks awesome.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay for the PC had a nifty mech you could operate (one of the reasons why the PC version is superior to the Xbox original, if I remember correctly).

I've tried to like the Lost Planet series but the gameplay just bores me to death. Plus the Akrid are really lame enemies :/Ruldra wrote:You'll probably enjoy Lost Planet 2, it has a lot of different mechs and they behave like they would in real life. There's that Mechwarrior-themed Crysis total conversion mod, probably still unfinished. If it's going to recreate the gameplay of ye olde Mechwarrior, it won't be very arcadey (and the map design will be bound by the old computers' technical limitations), but the physics and handling should feel right.
My complaint about mechs in western games is that the animation is hardly ever any good. It should be done like that - the thing's pretty absurd, but seems alive, suffering even (partially thanks to the excellent sound effects too), and I think Battletech-style mechs should display as much "personality".
Everybody should play Metal Warriors further in than just the initial two missions (use emulator and savestates if you don't want to deal with those anymore), for some of the machines you get to have a go in later on have more heft to them than your basic Assault Suits clone gear.

On the Xbox version it gives you the mech to rampage around on one level near the end. Those few minutes stand out as one of the highlights of any game ever.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay for the PC had a nifty mech you could operate (one of the reasons why the PC version is superior to the Xbox original, if I remember correctly).

Apparently this level (or some part of it) was only on the PC.cools wrote:On the Xbox version it gives you the mech to rampage around on one level near the end.
While the mech here isn't a war machine - just anti-riot gear of prison guards - it feels "viscerally" just right (sounds better than the one in that F.E.A.R. 2 vid, but I guess it depends on your audio setup and the way it was recorded).
