SNK FTGs
Re: SNK FTGs
was more of a 3d fighting game player back in my early childhood in the 90s, so this thread is helping me realize that there are way more good fighting games from SNK than just the Samurai Showdown series. that's pretty much the only fighting game our arcade had that wasn't tekken or some capcom fighter.

Re: SNK FTGs
I still think XI is utterly underrated. IMO is the best in the series.XI is more balanced and far less forgiving.

Re: SNK FTGs
I've got Genjuro's moveset pretty well licked in SSII. I can hit all the moves more consistently than I can with Ryu in SSIV. As far as cancelling and all that goes, though, we'll have to see. The PSP dpad is by no means the worst I've come across. I actually prefer it to the Madcatz Fightpad, since diagonals are much easier.Casper<3 wrote:I love fighting games but find them near impossible to play on the PSP

I dunno, my PSP registers a diagnol about 1 out of every 5 times I hit it.
Re: SNK FTGs
What model are you using? The PSP-3000 has a very good D-pad.
Re: SNK FTGs
PSP 3000 and the D-Pad is complete shit.
BTW, it's not me it's 100% the D-Pad.
I'm very experienced in the world of fighting games and know when execution is me and when it's simple bad hardware.

AoF in general is pretty bad. Worst offenders are the spirit bar (that punishes you for using specials!) and the control scheme.Ruldra wrote: Art of Fighting is incredible, I love it. It probably feels clunkier to other fighters but it's still a very good game. The sequel didn't appeal to me though.
As for good fighters, the best picks would be
KOF: '98, 2k2 and 2k2 UM. '98 is kind of a cross between old school with new school, the 2k2s are faster and offense oriented.
Fatal Fury: Real Bout 2 is very solid and balanced, though a bit on the defensive side. RB1 is crazier and everyone is broken, plus it has ring outs. Makes for very entertaining matches. Fatal Fury Special is one of the best SF2 clones ever, very good though jumps are flooooatly.
Samurai Shodown: 2 is the best oldschool SS, basically like SS1 with more options and better controls. 4 is hella broken but fun, 5sp is the most balanced, though the systems are kinda weird and gimmicky. Still a quality game.
Other: Karnov's Revenge is an excellent oldschool game, despite what it may look like at first sight. It's VERY fast paced, with a combo friendly system while retaining the ground game and zoning of a SF2-like game. Characters are all quite fun to use and powerful too. If you like a "simple" game, then give this one a try. Once you get over how it looks like a cheesy SF2 clone, you'll probably fall in love with it.
Garou is very pretty to look at and I guess it's fine if you play it casually, but you'll probably hate it if you play it seriously. Just Defense is one of the most stupid defensive systems ever, and fast guard breaks + feint cancelling - guard cancels = frustration.
PS: Oh and don't just play them on PSP. Fighters are meant to be played against other people and you'll miss on most of the fun playing them against the CPU.
Re: SNK FTGs
I also like the strikers in 2K, always lots of laughs when playing with friends since we know how to abuse the hell out of their cheapness...cools wrote:It's the strikers system in 2K I like most of all about it, plus the music is superb. Wasn't a fan of all the brown factory backdrops and shipping yards either, bit soulless (a step down from '99 surprisingly.)
I had 2000 on AES when it was a £400 cart and paid it its dues, but I only kept '94 - '98 in the end, they're the best the series has to offer imo.
Probably the least hardcore of the series too, which helps
And IMO, it has the best soundtrack in the series. The best artwork too, the character portraits never looked so good.
My favorites KOF though are 95 and 98

I'm getting the sense that a lot of people play these online on the PC. Is there a version of MAME with netplay or something? Or is it a matter of finding your game in a collection for X360 or your console of choice?Hagane wrote:PS: Oh and don't just play them on PSP. GGPO or Supercade, both are emulators with very good netplay and lobbies and should be reasonable active, and they support the same fighting games as MAME roughly.Moniker wrote:I'm getting the sense that a lot of people play these online on the PC. Doesn't often happen I agree so entirely with a list, but you're right on the money dude. You know your fighting games. I'm glad someone sees what I was saying about Garou's complexity, not an easy game to get to grips with.

Re: SNK FTGs
Anyone here get all the Neo Geo Online Collection for PS2?
The online functionality was obviously not there unless you were in Japan, but the quality of most of the conversions was good. Well actually it varied: The Garou Battle Archives Vols. 1 & 2 were superb and came thru with true low-res (240p).
While I think the worst offender is possibly World Heroes Gorgeous. The original games had warping floors ala SF2, this compilation's versions unfortunately neglected to implement the effect at all.
Or should I say emulate it because I'm pretty sure Neorage screwed this effect up in the same way!
I was always impressed by the cover art of this line of releases too. Some of the best in the ol' fighting collection perhaps.

Rick also has plenty of powerful defensive options. And in general, AB attacks are very strong, give you enough invincibility to avoid most attacks and let you combo into damaging stuff. Add to that the absence of guard breaks, some great guard cancels, crappy throws and few good overheads and things can get annoying against a good defensive player (especially if he uses Kim, Tung, Duck -my main BTW). But yeah there are some very strong offensive characters like Rick, Chonshu and Bob "infinite from a throw" Wilson. That doesn't take away from the fact that it is a bit on the defensive side in general though.Estebang wrote:Rick Strowd begs to differ.
Still a very good game.
Oh and World Heroes Perfect is another game that looks rubbish on the surface but is actually really fun once you learn it. Sort of a middle ground between the SF2 era and Guilty Gear (Fuuma and Hanzo even have what I consider the granddaddy of roman cancels!). Very fast paced and offensive without completely straying from SF2 basics.

Good info, Hagane. Thanks for that.
Anyone got an opinion on SvC: Chaos? I haven't played it yet, but it looks nice. Is it worth picking up?

Re: SNK FTGs
I like it a lot, but I only played it on MAME against the CPU. I absolutely love fighting the endbosses, they are very very challenging. And if you fulfill some requisites, you get to fight one of the 2 secret bosses who are even more challenging.EllertMichael wrote:Anyone got an opinion on SvC: Chaos? After tons of attempts I was able to 1cc it. One of the toughest singleplayer campaigns I came across in the genre.
PS: I love how Chun-li looks in this game. Those legs!

Re: SNK FTGs
SvC Chaos is a silly game. Tons of weird characters and a whole lot of broken. Certainly fun, though.
Recommending ADK stuff; interesting that so many people rep Ninja Master's. Recommending Kizuna Encounter. I think Savage Reign is fun to mess around with but I don't know anything about the game other than Kizuna Encounter being its sequel. Recommending Breakers, of course; Breakers Revenge is just an update, so you want to play/get that. Art of Fighting 3/Gaiden is amazing.
I think I should just make a real list. A lot of this shit really needs to be in GGPO, though I guess there's that glitch.
I'm sure tons of people consider it bad English, but the game's title is "Ninja Master's Haouninpouchou".Obiwanshinobi wrote:Ninja Master's. (In before the "Ninja Master's what?" jokes.)

Lots of love for world heroes perfect, and I realise I cited Jet earlier in the thread: was an accident. Jet's ok but punishing, Perfect is definitely the series pinnacle.

Re: SNK FTGs
I don't really like SVC Chaos terribly much, but it's anything but ugly.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: SNK FTGs
Nice selection, you skipped some of the CG nasties tho and several of the boring ones (like the rotating diamond stage)Estebang wrote:What?Skykid wrote:I never liked SVC: Chaos, ugly game

The "ugly" was actually more in relation to the broken mechanics than the graphics, however I'm still not a fan of the dystopian aesthetic as it jars with the characters imo. Akuma and Chun-Li fighting in an apocalyptic train yard and a rotating space tube just doesn't work.
Backgrounds always look far more impressive when you lay them bare too.

Really? IV is my favorite of the series and have never seemed particularly broken. I'm unfamiliar with high level tactics though so I'll defer to you on that one.Hagane wrote:

Just an incredibly deep game. I really like SSV Special too, been playing it recently. The OTT violence is really cool and the system is quite similar to SS2.Acid King wrote:Really? Re: SNK FTGs
I highly doubt you'll be able to find a match on either of those games without having to arrange it beforehand. And regardless, both of those games have pretty poor netcode, so even if you find a game it'll probably have enough input lag to make it nearly unplayable. Just use GGPO on PC.Moniker wrote:Anyone here have the XBLA versions of Sam Shodown 2 or Garou? I wanna make sure the online community is active enough to warrant my precious 800MSP.

Re: SNK FTGs
Definitely. While as Estebang notes the backgrounds are beautiful, Capcom characters look like dogshit (especially Hugo, who looks like an upsized, lower res version of his SF3 incarnation). And it plays even worse... broken as hell, crappy system and awful controls (especially when it comes to charge characters).Skykid wrote:I never liked SVC: Chaos, ugly game and messy as hell.
Lots of characters have stupid stuff (such as Sogetsu being able to do infinite chip damage with his water columns while on rage mode). But it's great exactly because lots of characters have that kind of crap, so it ends up being balanced, kind like HnK though not as crazy.Acid King wrote:Really? Not that I really played it, but Aggressors of Dark Kombat is interesting to say the least. Controls like in a 2D brawler, art style akin to Ninja Commando.
I know, but it has no chance of sinking in outside of Japan.Despatche wrote:I'm sure tons of people consider it bad English, but the game's title is "Ninja Master's Haouninpouchou".
