VGA? RGB? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH D:

Post by moh »

So I decided to dig up my old projector from about 6 years ago so i could easily have a huge TATE setup.
I went to hook up my ps2 when i noticed this thing that read "RGB".....
it looked exactly like this

Image

now correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't that a VGA input? doesnt RGB have that fat SCART jack? im confused D:

VGA is RGB, but RGB isn't VGA. Confused yet? RGB is descriptive of the colour format, VGA describes a little more--like the resolution, which for VGA starts at 640x480. SCART is only a plug type, it isn't indicative of RGB; SCART can carry s-video, composite, or RGB, and lately, even component, but if it carries RGB then it does this in a low resolution, i.e. lower than 640x480. If the projector or monitor you are planning to use specifically is geared to VGA, then it might not (or, will probably not) support the low resolution RGB that SCART carries. If you can spot the sync type that the equipment uses then you can find this out. Low resolution RGB uses a sync at 15KHz, whereas VGA syncs at 31 or higher. Look in the projector's manual, or google its model number and you should find out what you need to know.

To be absolutely pedantic..... the above image is a DSUB-15 input not a VGA input.

Over time though the above input connector has been synonymous with VGA signals for PC use..... hence why so many describe and understand it to be a VGA connector.

thanks for the replies! =] so given the option of composite, S-video, or this VGA input for hooking up my ps2, would VGA be the best choice?

The PS2 does not output VGA, at least not with most of the games and even then not without problems (sync on green).

Check your beamer's manual and see what's the input range for the VGA input. If it says 15khz + then you can get a Scart to DSub15 adapter and give it a try. If it says 31khz + you need an upscaler (HDBoxPro or something). Even if it says 15khz you might still need a sync processor/stripper to connect your PS2 directly to this input. Depends on the input handling composite sync vs. seperate H/V sync signals.

Or weather your projector can handle Cvideo as Csync. The PS2 does not output Csync, only Cvideo. if you need Csync, you'll need to strip it out of the Cvideo with an LM1881. I believe that is what the sync strike is, see the thread on this board.

If your projector only works with separate Hsync and Vsync, you have more work to do.

Just for reference, I too had a port like this on a hand-me-down DELL projector. LOOKED like VGA, but was not VGA. I know because it had another port for VGA and this one wasn't labeled. After some research, I discovered I could use it to connect component cables to the projector. I had to do some searching for a D-SUB to RCA Breakout cable, but once I found it, I was able to use the component plugs on my PS2. It looked reeal perty and played nice with all of my rhythm games as far as timing is concerned.

are there any risks to TATE-ing my projector? all the vents are still clear, so no worries about overheating.

getting a premade PS2 15 pin Dsub from ultimarc already includes the lm1881 so the H and V Sync are already being outputed on the correct pins. But its still CGA resolution. Unless the specific game supports higher, or you use a modded system to force output at a higher resolution (could also use HDTV Player which does the same thing without a modchip).

IIRC there was a page on gamesx that showed on certain models of PS2 how to either turn off SoG. Or to acquire Csync from an eariler trace as well as green before sync is added to it.
looking for it though seems to show that the page was lost.

Some modchips bios/OS's also have the option to turn off SoG. As well as macrovision and whatever else that is there.

I'll see your DSUB-15 and raise you a "DE-15."
