Abobo's Big Adventure: Tribute To The NES

Post by mrsmiley381 »

Abobo's Big Adventure

So the good folks at I-Mockery appear to be working on a game where you play as Abobo and fight through various recreations and reinterpretations of NES games. I was expecting another knock-off like Monster Time or The Human Centipede game, both of which were humorous near-exact clones, but this game actually looks awesome from the trailer.

I've been browsing I-Mockery since I first crawled onto the Internet in 2000 and it's pretty crazy to see them attempt something like this. What do you guys think?
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Hate Flash games but that one looks pretty fun. Good trailer.

I've beta-tested a level for this game. From my (limited) experience, it was pretty rad and very faithful to the source material. Wish I could've played more than just that one level, though. The cut scene following the completion was pretty cool, but I don't think I'm at liberty to reveal anything about the beta at this point.

It is fucking amazing, though.

It's shit. I hope they get hit with 10 different C&D letters. This is more of an insult than a tribute to the NES.

I got up to the part with Donkey Kong raining down explosive barrels and it became frustrating as hell almost instantly. Can't get away from the Double Dragon dude and the barrels just land on you as soon as you stand up. D:

It's fine, what's wrong with it?

I never really held flash games in the highest regard anyway, but this is pretty well made with plenty of humour, nice graphics and lots of amusing reference material. It doesn't work particularly well in real game terms (you shouldn't get punched by enemies when you're in the middle of throwing a volley yourself), but it's still a bit of fun.

I got just past Jaws on the Mario swimming stage.

Sure, if you're a 13-year-old raised on the Newgrounds channel who's never played an NES game outside of an emulator.
nice graphics
They're almost entirely stolen, and the clash of umpteen different art styles is painful to watch.

They couldn't even spell Kid Niki right.

Also: ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED popups (really feeling the NES nostalgia here!!), a dash attack that requires super meter to use, and the aforementioned getting hit while in the middle of a combo.

While I won't say that anything in the game is offensive, ripping the head off a child and eating it is not even remotely humorous in any context.

The real tragedy is that people are going to be playing this instead of legitimate NES tributes like Blade Buster, Wizorb and that Rockman-esque one that just came out.

So far I've reached Balloon Fight stage and it really shows the game's biggest flaw: it doesn't know when to stop. The very first beat'em up stage is short enough so that the shortcomings and repetitiveness of gameplay don't show up but after that it seems the developers were trying to prolong the game just for the sake of including all possible obscure 8-bit cameos - some of them are more fun than others but as a result the levels just seem to go on and on... Still, not particularly bad tribute game by any means (Super Mario Bros. Crossover easily outshines it in terms of gameplay fun) unless you're offended some of the more immature jokes. Yes, your Zelda dungeon is shaped like a dick, who would've guessed that.

Reached the balloon stage, but got bored there and decided to quit. It's a nice tribute, but I dunno, it ain't that fun to play. It does feel like it keeps going on and on and on...after a while it gets boring.

Btw, how exactly did Abobo mate with that mermaid?

Lol, you guys are taking this way too seriously.
It's just another screwy flash game from some guys with a creative hobby.

Personally I'll probably never play it again, but I don't see the need for all the hardcore critique. I've definitely played plenty of worse flash games.

They were making a huge effort to hype it up as some kind of masterpiece, though. Enough to get thousands of dollars in donations.

I don't think "pretentious" is the right word here. We reserve that for the Passages, Braids and Limbos of the world.

Read the About page. It's very pretentious, claiming not only that it surpasses the NES's capabilities, but it pushes Flash to the maximum.

For once, I find myself agreeing with Skykid. I had good fun until I ran out of time and had to quit during the Zelda level. That being said, it probably would have worked just as well as a Flash movie.

Yeah I don't get it. I'm all for indie developers going out and having fun with the game making hobby, even if they do come back with some crap.
I went back to this a little while ago for confirmation and was happy to find it saves progress by IP, so I played through to the end of the Zelda stage.

Nothing wrong with it. Stupid humour, simple and not particularly refined gameplay, but by no means a bad way to waste ten minutes.

For a flash game.

Meh. None of the parodies are as good as their inspirations. I kept playing to see if the next game was better, but it never really improved. Overall, it just seems sloppy. I can't say I'm really offended by the over-the-top self-aggrandizing, but if it's sincere, I'm a little embarrassed for them.

Having made the thread, I'm going to have to agree with a lot of the complaints here. The trailer made it look a bit cooler than it turned out. I had to stop last night around the Balloon Fight stage as well, partly because I needed a break, and partly because the Zelda part started to drag things a bit.

Flash was honestly holding this game back. If they worked on a platform with something a bit more usable than ActionScript they probably could have had some better enemy behavior.

Hilarious to see some people in the comments asking for a console port. They'd get slapped with a hundred lawsuits before it went out the door.

I'm still unsure as to why anyone was expecting some kind of holy grail from a free amateur Flash game? :|

Probably the same kiddies who hang out on newgrounds/addictive games/armor games/kongregate or whatever else shit Flash game site and think (insert half assed Flash game here) is better than anything else out there.

Cleared the game last night. While I did enjoy it, I was kinda hoping for "NES hard" difficulty. It was a little too easy.

The ending was awesome, though. Hope you guys had a chance to see it. BTW, I've noticed something. In the top-right corner of the screen, it displays a version number, implying that there may be updates.

EDIT: V1.2 is out. I'll be playing through it again to check for any improvements/additions.

Just played through it. I guess it was sort of okay. It was cool seeing some of the references and a few bits even made me go "hey, that's pretty clever", but mostly it just felt like teenager-level idea with all the gore and violence for violence's sake.

How many stages after the balloon level? Because that and the Zelda one are really boring, don't want to play it again unless the end is close to that.

There's eight stages, Balloon Fight being the fifth stage. I'd say the sixth and seventh stages were the best ones, actually.
