Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
After adding the story to Wikipedia's Armed Police Batrider page (and would Raizing kindly make up their mind as to which year it takes place in? The story says 2019, the attract mode says 2014...), I got an odd hunch about why there's a boss named "Boredom". Was Raizing trying to name the bosses for the Seven Cardinal Vices? (Honestly, look at what GiganTech turned out to be. Then you'll understand why that would be apt...) Unfortunately, my analogization isn't perfect (it would help if I knew more Japanese words, and how they can variously translate; a good example is "tsumi", which can mean "crime" or "malice")...
Conflict: Wrath
Bazzcok: Avarice??? (This one was process of elimination...)
Boredom: Sloth
Deviate: Lust
Envy: same (I'm not sure if we should count Blunt and...whatever the second mech is called...in the naming scheme...)
Grubby: Gluttony
Discharge: Pride??? (see Bazzcok)
{rueful chuckle} It would have been a great deal of fun if they'd used the original Latin names of the vices--Ira, Avaritia, Acedia, Luxuria, Invidia, Gula, Superbia (and, if you can find a way to get the original holder of Sloth's position, Sadness, in, Tristitia)...IF my hypothesis has anything going for it.

Re: Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
Super-mega-necro-bump.
It's very possible that Bazzcok is a way they decided to spell The Buzzcocks, a british punk band. I've noticed that Batrider contains lots of pop-culture references and take-offs, so it seems quite likely.
For another example of the pop-culture references, 'Let Ass Kick Together' is essentially a cover of 'Cocobat Crunch' by Cocobat.
Not particularly sure what Discharge would be though

"Boredom" was the title of a successful single by the Buzzcocks:

...and Discharge was the name of a nihilistic punk band of the same era somewhat akin to the UK Subs:

Re: Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
Conflict is also a British punk band.
Deviate is an album by British heavy metal band Kill II This
Envy is a Japanese rock band.
Blunt is possibly taken from the last name of Martin Blunt, the original bassist for The Charlatans, a British alt. rock band.
Sobut is a Japanese hard rock band.
So now we have all of them, except for Grubby, which I absolutely can't find anything for, but I'd take a guess it's probably a Japanese rock band.
I guess Raizing really likes their guitars
Final list of boss name meanings:

Re: Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
I assumed Boredom was a reference to the long-running Japanese noise rock band Boredoms.
This seems like a good place to mention the NEW JACK CITY graffiti in Esprade.

Re: Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
Kind of an old thread to post to, but I just discovered that not only is Let Ass Kick Together a cover of Cocobat Crunch by Cocobat, but Chop U is a cover of Can't Wake Up, also by Cocobat.
Cocobat Crunch is the first song on the Cocobat Crunch album, and Can't Wake Up is the second song on it
For comparisons:

Cocobat Crunch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TftL6zTd9RU (skip to 45 seconds in for the actual song; the intro is eating "cocobat crunch" cereal
)

Nice find trap! Thanks for the info. Not only is the music great, the cover artwork is by pushead. Excellent.

Re: Odd thought on the Batrider bosses

Not Batrider-related but this reminds me a bit of the Thunder Force IV intro theme and first stage boss theme.

Re: Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
Yeah, thanks for uploading those, trap! I also like your list of boss names and meanings. Most of them are quite obviously correct, although isn't Martin Blunt a bit of a stretch?

Re: Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
Probably
That's why I put "Possibly", where the rest are assertions.
Yeah, it's definitely some good music, I'm glad I bought some albums. I guess I'll probably see if I can get any more without spending too much (I managed to get Cocobat Crunch new for only $15, where the only other "new" seller on Amazon was asking like $100

Awesome findings! Chop U happen to be one of my favourite tunes!
Re: Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
There's a japanese punk/hardcore band from the 80's, The Execute, with an album by the name of Blunt Sleazy. Perhaps?Klatrymadon wrote:Yeah, thanks for uploading those, trap! Re: Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
Nice catch! That seems much more likely than what I came up with
Added to my list.

Re: Odd thought on the Batrider bosses
The peppy "let's go!" sample in "Let Ass Kick Together" suddenly sounds a lot funnier, given the primal grunt it's standing in for.
Great thread, I'd never have guessed APB's music references went so far.

Haha, It will be difficult to hear the "let's go" sample without smiling, from now on.
