Haven't seen this mentionned here, the charity marathon from SDA is finishing today and I really enjoyed it.
I have a few questions here:
_is shadow wraith the same as here(just ran unreal)?
_are there any (other) members of shmups that attended this (to put a pic on a name) ?
_why is there no shmups played in these marathons ?
I guess u can't really speedrun a shmup idk.
Too many white socks for my liking but there's been some entertaining stuff in there, mikwuyma's runs have been my fave so far. He didn't quite get the 1CC on Metal Slug X or 3 (came extremely close on 3) but he did nail Sunset Riders (SNES).
This made me check out Demon's Crest. Really nice game, I've honestly never heard of it before. A villain from Daimakaimura gets his own game... weird. It seems like it's equipped specifically for speedrunning too, since there's a lot of clinging to/climbing around obstacles.
My favourite run so far has been of Kid Chameleon. Peaches absolutely killed it. I missed his Blast Corps run (I've actually seen him practicing this years ago), but I'll check it out some other time. Overall it's a pretty fun event and I'm surprised I've bothered watching as much as I have (I don't speedrun and I don't intend to). I'm already looking forward to next year's run.

It's one of the top SNES games, actually. It also has different endings depending on how far you got in the game.
There'll probably be another marathon in july/august.
all the games i wanted to see were on when i was either asleep or was not at home, so i haven't seen much yet. super moneky ball was a great watch and they surprised me with sonic adventure 2 when they pulled off lots of stuff (that wasn't even glitching) i didn't know about, and i had a-ranked nearly the entire game back then.
i can't wait to check out the oot run when it's out. i hear the guy did some aweosme stuff.
blog - scores - collection Don't worry about it. You can travel from the Milky Way to Andromeda and back 1500 times before the sun explodes.
Actually I tell a lie, the best I've seen so far is the Mario 64 70 star run. I saw about 40 stars last night and it was really, really impressive. Extremely well optimised and very few mistakes.

Demon's Crest is the third game in the series, with the first two being Gargoyle's Quest 1 and 2 for GB and NES respectively. GQ2 was pretty good from what I remember.
But yeah, Demon's Crest is awesome. I remember there being reports about it being returned to stores so often, it managed to achieve negative sales figures. That was my reason for checking it out in the first place, so imagine my surprise when I started playing. Sadly, it's the one game that my Retro Duo won't play properly.

Yeah, shmups aren't especially interesting from a speedrunner's point of view - in most games the stages all play/scroll out in exactly the same amount of time. The only area that can really be optimized in is killing the stage bosses as quickly as possible, which isn't really all that different from efficient survivalist play. Additionally, you can't really lose too much time from mistakes, either - maybe you could lose a trivial amount of time by dying at a boss and losing some attack time (killing the boss more slowly). In the end, speedruns of a shmup would probably vary by only a few milliseconds between runs, not really enough space for interesting competition/improvement.
tl:dr - Watching a shmup speedrun isn't really very much different from watching someone efficiently 1CC/1 Life Clear. Not that that isn't impressive, it just doesn't make for a very interesting "speedrun".
I couldn't sit through the FF7 speedrun--it was painstakingly boring--but I'm already having withdrawals. His patience to speedrun such a long game is admirable, I certainly wouldn't have that kind of determination.
I ordered two of those Serious Time t-shirts. Also I didn't even know America had sizes above 4XL, maybe I could buy one and use it as a blanket?
