New Starfox Overclocked

Post by Drakon »

Me and doug stumbled across a way to get gsu 2 starfox 1 running much faster than before. Before the game could only go up to 28.3 mhz, but now I've got it happily running at 40 mhz which is a HUGE increase. It probably could go even faster but 40 mhz is really intense and if I made the game go any faster I think it would become too difficult.

Wow, gameplay got much faster, and apparently more playable too! Kudos on your work. How did you do it? Did you lifted a leg from the SuperFX and fed it with a 40 mhz crystal oscillator? Any gfx or sfx glitches? Think it's possible for Star Fox 2?

It's a little difficult you need to install the rom of the game onto a gsu 2 cartridge. The gsu 2 is the last version of the superfx chip. The gsu 2 has way less slowdown and can overclock faster than the other chip revisions. And yes I cut the clock trace to the gsu 2 and fed it the signal directly from a crystal oscillator. Unfortunately most games the programming screws up when overclocked past a certain speed.

Starfox 2 I did a while ago. Here's it running at 33 mhz. The default speed of these carts is 21.4 mhz

Here's stunt race fx running at 30 mhz, it runs at 32 mhz but glitches at that speed

Here's doom. Doom was the easiest one because the game already comes on a gsu 2 cartridge so I didn't need to desolder the surface mount maskrom and solder up an eprom. In this video doom is running at 30 mhz but doom does periodically freeze at 30 mhz so I lowered it to 28.3 mhz and it stopped the freezing.
