What is the novelty behind Virtua Fighter series?
Re: What is the novelty behind Virtua Fighter series?
Eddy is only unpredictable if you're not familiar with his moveset. After a while you can easily see what's coming and react accordingly. I'm no expert Tekken player but I've beaten quite a bunch of button-masher Eddies. You want unpredictable, try playing against Mokujin (my favorite character btw).
Also, why did you necro a 3-year old thread?

Ah, Virtua Fighter. It'd be nice if there were more interested people around where I am, most of the fighting game people I know play Street Fighter, MvC, and Tekken all day.
Windows 95 port of VF2: wish it had proper 3D backgrounds, but otherwise awesome. It's a different type of fighter than what I'm used to [read: Capcom and SNK stuff].
I never liked VF4 too much for some reason, although my memory of it might have been tainted by the fact that the buttons on the cab I was playing it on [at Movietowne in Trinidad, I love their arcade, they have After Burner Climax
] had issues [occasionally didn't do anything].

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Here's a good reason to bump a 3-year-old thread: we haven't mentioned that Final Showdown is coming to XBLA/PSN sometime next year.
I admire Virtua Fighter for being the only game of its genre that actually feels like a martial arts simulator.

Just when you think you've seen neorichieb at his most retarded, a thread like this gets bumped.

Is Final Showdown the latest Virtua Fighter? If it comes out for PSN and the netcode is good, I might buy. Only played the first game but I liked it a lot.Estebang wrote:Here's a good reason to bump a 3-year-old thread: we haven't mentioned that Final Showdown is coming to XBLA/PSN sometime next year.

Re: What is the novelty behind Virtua Fighter series?
Yes, Final Showdown is [presumably] the final version of VF5. And the netcode on the 360 version of VF5 is far and away the best there is for a 3D fighter, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
Re: What is the novelty behind Virtua Fighter series?
Yes it is and the netcode should be good. The 360 version has excellent netcode though no lobby system or spectator mode but who cares as the netcode made up for it.Ruldra wrote:Is Final Showdown the latest Virtua Fighter? Dunno if really related (maybe not handled by the same team at sega), but Virtual-On OT XBLA also has amazing netcode, the game came out with a lobby system and they added in a spectator mode to it in a patch.Shelcoof wrote:Yes it is and the netcode should be good. Guardian Heroes XBLA also has some of the best online features for an XBLA game, would be surprised if they don't have more stuff for this release.
Re: What is the novelty behind Virtua Fighter series?
So, is there a site or anything explaining VF5's mechanics and character guides? I'm looking for something like this: http://www.eventhubs.com/guides/2008/ju ... -and-tips/

Re: What is the novelty behind Virtua Fighter series?
To get this back on topic trolling Virtua Fighter:
OP had a point. For all the breathless praise the series gets about technical depth, it really doesn't have a lot going on in the creative/interesting game dynamics department. There is a reason VF is widely regarded, even by its few detractors, as being both really well-balanced and really deep (two things that don't ordinarily go together) ... and it's not because the developers practice sorcery. Not unsurmountably hard to balance a game, even a game with as many variables as VF, if the variables are largely straightforward and spreadsheet-friendly. All the meat of the trickiness in VF lies in how cunning your opponent is, and maybe that's a good thing, but I like a more interesting kinks in my games - especially if gameplay is all that's being offered.

IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Re: What is the novelty behind Virtua Fighter series?
Just bought VF4:EVO on a whim (the guy I was buying other stuff from had it cheap, so...), although not only I don't like the genre all that much, but those few people I know locally who play 1vs1 fighters regularly don't seem to be into VF in particular. Thus my chances of ever learning the game properly are slim.
Still, development-wise those were Sega's best years in my book, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Whoop that ass four times, now you wanna switch. You can use Eddy, now I'm Dr. Boskonovitch.Ruldra wrote:Eddy is only unpredictable if you're not familiar with his moveset. I can't believe someone complained about the clean graphics in this thread. Not enough grimy piss yellow games out there for you huh?
I prefer VF over the other fighters. It's definetly a deeper & more balanced experience than what the other big names have to offer. I've always akin'd it as the Gran Turismo of fighting games. As I'm somewhat of a patient gamer, more depth to me equals more bang for my buck. Besides, the flashy visuals and over the top character designs of the other fighters come off as immature to me. Virtua Fighter is a game with class, it's the gentleman's fighter.
I use Pai, she's amazing.

Re: What is the novelty behind Virtua Fighter series?
I'm really looking forward to VF5:FS, but my connection isn't that good and most of my matches will be against US people, so I expect laggy matches. And since timing is so important here, it might ruin the whole thing for me. I still think it'll lag a bunch even if the netcode is good.
I hope they release a demo so I can at least test the connection.

Someone clearly hasn't seen the absurd character customization items available in Final Shodown. You can turn Goh into a speedo-wearing clown. It's as bad as Tekken 5/6.circuitface wrote:Besides, the flashy visuals and over the top character designs of the other fighters come off as immature to me. Re: What is the novelty behind Virtua Fighter series?
So I, um, played VF4:EVO a bit. Seems fairly accessible, tutorials and all.
Frankly, I don't get any of the above complaints about the graphics. Sure, they'd become technically outclassed pretty soon, but the arenas have sort of realistic vibe to them, as if they were modelled upon real places. Kind of like Silent Hill and Duke Nukem 3D still look sort of solid. The animations are excellent as expected, but the character models impressed me most, especially the faces. Very few games from that period sport "realistic" mugs rendered in real time that don't make me feel awkward nowadays. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Mafia on the PC, FFX, The Bouncer and not much else. Also, nicely animated bosoms (not overdone). SCII may look cleaner and higher-tech, but for my money it's aged worse graphically (utter lack of facial expressions is more jarring in that one, especially on the PS2, which - coupled with somewhat porny take on the ladies - makes for a slight aesthetical discomfort).
