I have a Japanese system too. I bought the game from within the UK using my Hong Kong gamertag and linked UK paypal account.

Perhaps it's because of the British colonization of Hong Kong?

Since 5pb is finally getting a game of their own released in the US (Phantom Breaker), maybe it's not too much to hope that Bullet Soul will make its way to the US Marketplace?

I own PB but am still kind of shocked it's making it way over here.

...too be honest I would want to see Chaos Head Noah or Steins Gate come over here first before Phantom Breaker or Bullet Soul.

I got PB too, there are some cool features at work there but overall I didn't think it was too good at all, in fact I preferred Ougen Mouso by quite a margin and that's not fantastic either.

I hope they release Bullet Soul in the west, it would work well as a budget price entry level shmup that doesn't necessarily want to utterly destroy a beginner within the first 5 seconds of gameplay, but encourages him to take increasingly dangerous risks in order to improve his score.

I didn't buy it using points (via paypal), I bought it directly in HK dollars using my linked paypal account. If you have a linked paypal account, it appears as a payment option when you try to purchase the game in HK dollars.

Given that the game is region free and not IP locked I really can't see that happening. This game should have been an XBLA game in the first place. It's simply too lite and not good enough to warrant a retail release. They'd have had far more interational sales that way.

There are also a select variety of HK GoD releases that don't require a VPN. I was able to add my credit card to my HK account yesterday.

Does anyone actually play this for score? I noticed there's no scoreboard.

Ok, got it sorted. I had to set everything up and make the purchase on my pc.
Next time I turned my Xbox on and logged into the hk account it started the download.

Are the other shmups on the hk god ip locked ?

IIRC it won't let you complete the purchase if a title is IP locked. I think all the other shmups on there are indeed IP locked though. And even if they're not, they're certainly region locked.

Yeah, it's the same with all the JPN shmups that are on the Asian GoD - DLC can only be found on the JPN Marketplace.

There is a local scoreboard and xbl leader board.

This game isn't too bad, don't know if the scoring mech might make it boring after a few plays though.

I think he meant that there's no topic for it in the Hi Scores forum.

Is the scoring really just as simple as trying to point blank everything, and kill and collect everything? Seems odd that the bullet souls don't seem to play any part in scoring.

Yep, that's exactly how scoring works. The white canceled bullets are just for show.

All those "Mystery Bonuses" and whatnot are simply triggered by shooting everything in sight. It's pretty damn shallow.

Not completely true, though a lot of bonuses are all about blasting the heck out of everything sometimes you have to do something a little more involved than that - off the top of my head, for example, you need to wait for certain linear enemy formations to line up before destroying them all at once, or causing the falling buildings in the first level to topple onto the spider-bot things instead of destroying them directly.

Still not particularly deep, mind you, but not quite totally mindless.

Very strange, especially given that the game is even titled after the effect. It's like they came up with a great idea that the bullets had souls, then either couldn't be bothered or ran out of time to do anything interesting with them. Even just letting you scoop them up for points/multipliers would have added a little depth. There's loads of ideas they could have done with it, and they just went and wasted it.

I just tried expanding the screen to 200% (vertically) and it reminds me more than ever of the old Toaplan shmups.

Yeah, I've noticed those events as they triggered Achievements as well.

Yeah, this game is probably the biggest waste of potential I've ever seen in an STG. It's really sad.

As has been stated numerous times, I think this would have met with some international success and acclaim if it had been released as an XBLA title. It's easy, very self-explanatory, and the bright pyrotechnics and Gurren Lagann-esque character designs are welcoming to Western newcomers. It's too bad that 5pb decided to foolishly invest everything in the Japanese otaku retail market as usual, who are becoming ever less dependable. I wonder how much of the budget went towards paying Norio Wakamoto for that trailer.

Eschatos completely deserved a full-price retail release though, especially with the WS games.

There wasn't any pre-order/1st print DLC associated with the retail release was there?

First print had an OST disc, but the music is awful chuggy butt-rock that swipes from DDP's soundtrack. Not worth it at all.

Yeah, the music isn't great. I'd happily pay for a better DLC soundtrack.
