Snops Attack! XBLIG in Development

Post by SnopsGames »

Hello All,

for the last 10 months I have been working on an XBLIG shmup:

Image

Here is a Video

If you're interested for more info, I did an interview with Pinkbullets Shmup Blog: Pinkbullets Interview

See my Twitter page for more images and updates: http://twitter.com/snoppies

I plan on getting the game out within the next 2 months (we'll see), so any feedback is welcome (and may alter the game itself!).

Thanks!
Mike

Looks nice, very colorful. But that cat boss is freaking me out >_>

I think the stages could use some more enemy variety as well.

Thanks for the feedback!

About the enemies, good point! Unfortunately, the videos don't show all the enemies. So far, I have 5 graphically unique popcorn enemies, and I am planning to add at least 5 more. Each enemy will eventually have at least 2 variations (with slight graphic/color changes and unique movement/shot patterns), while some enemies will have even more variations (I currently have an enemy with 4 unique variations). I plan on having at least 6 stages, with 4 unique bosses. Some bosses will make a reappearance in an altered form, with different attacks.

I realize this still may not be enough enemies, but once I get them in there and test the variety, I may alter this amount. I also have to work on a reasonable number, since drawing and animating all this is a lot of work! :)

Also, the shield bar is just for the EASY mode, since this is going on XBLIG. The normal mode will only have only a few shields, while the most difficult mode will not have shields at all.

Oh, if anyone is in App Hub/Creator's Club, I am putting the first 2 levels up for play test sometime in the coming week.

Thanks again for your comments!

Thanks for checking out the interview, all! I think it's great Ian of pinkbullets asked me to do this. Maybe he'll have some more interviews with indie Shmup devs in the future. It's a really interesting process of making one of these types of games from the ground up: to see it start as a single moving pixel on a blank screen to multiple layers of parallax scrolling and explosion mayhem!

... I also need to figure out a way to put better quality youtube videos up.

Nice interview! I follow XBLIG pretty closely and still didn't know about this game till reading the forums here and finding your interview (I think in another thread). Game looks great Mike, looking forward to trying it out!

Wow, this looks very cool. Any chance of adding a true vertical mode as well with smaller (visible) hitbox and TATE? I'll be buying this for sure btw. *cough*witharcademode*cough*

First off, Snops Attack! levels 1-3 are on Playtest on the AppHub developer forum. If you are a member (or know someone who is), if you get a chance to check it out I would really appreciate any feedback.

Quick update: Working on last level and finishing up a few bosses + enemies. Need to add the proper menus and online ranking. Once that's all done, then I have to cover all of the microsoft requirements. Hopefully this all doesn't take more than 3 weeks (or so), but there has been some real life issues which has delayed me a bit so I don't want to put anything in stone at the moment. Working on this everyday, though!

emphatic: for this release on xbox, not going to have TATE :( but it is something I am considering for the future. :) Also, I do have a visible hitbox I turn on/off for debugging. I may just leave it permanently on since it is unobtrusively small (but visible).

Cut and paste from my blog:

Update: Lots of changes recently. Too many to list, but overall, changed several Weapon/Buddy behaviors, added more Weapon power levels and alternate fire modes. Working on adding special attacks in addition to all that. You can also switch your main Weapon at will! (No need to pick up floating weapon icon to switch!)

Your life will be easier if you actually do take advantage of switching your main Weapon and enabling the alternate fire modes (in addition to pairing it with a complementary Buddy). The level enemy spawns will now be aggressively tailored to take advantage of your new capabilities. In other words, yes, switching your Weapon/Buddy combo will actually be useful AND necessary in some cases! This makes everything more tactical and strategic in that you now have to think about what Buddy to keep for later or discard for another, as well as when to switch to your main Weapon, in addition to activating your alternate fire mode to get out of a given "situation"! Whew!

Due to the Weapon and Buddy changes, there are now 336 unique Weapon/Buddy Combos. My math may off on that (it's really, really late), but even so, there's a lot. Forgetting the technicalities, there are 8 main Weapon/Buddy combos, plus adding bombs and special attacks to the mix give you a lot of options. Remember, these numbers are not for show - the level spawns/patterns are being redone to take advantage of that! The combinations will be key to making your job easier, but you always have the option to just use your default Weapon and leave it not powered-up if you want... Good luck with that!

The bad news: adding and tweaking these features may delay the release date, but its ok because it will make the game better in the end! (maybe...)

Oh, how about a screenshot of the newly maxed-out Magma beam (and "City" level):

PLZ leave the hitbox option.....

...and lolz re: emphatic's TATE request. That WOULD be icing on the cake...but we're not asking for MIRACLES :)

Yeah, considering the way everything else is going it seems to be too much to ask for an arcade game to not have the stupid widescreen aspect thanks to some kind of forced regulation M$ has. I think Sumez or someone covered the specifics, but considering this game is more of a vertizontal going by the screenshots anyway I guess it'd be null and void to have a rotation option.

It does look very nice though. I'll be interested to see how this works as soon as I can figure out how the fuck to get into XBLIG.
