Because Anchor Bay did not renew the distribution rights, so they went outta print. Unscrupulous bastards kept the DVDs and sold them on the secondary market as OOP DVDs  Don't blame it on Netfix, they're good people.

Same thing happened with the Emmanuelle videos, but those can be found on the cheep on a good day 8)

You just gotta watch out for bootleggers who managed to make decent pirated copies of these

Goddamn, they are that expensive now? I got mine back whenever they came out, but it seems like even just a couple of years ago that set was like 20 bucks a pop. 'Tis a shame!

I missed out on the Ilsa set, which used to sell for 20 bucks or less (used). Now a used set will cost ye around 100. F*** that. For 100, I can buy way more Sleaze and Grindhouse videos on the cheep... except for those old NoShame DVDs. Alas, those, too, have gone way outta print

I bought several copies of this one for less than $10 at the Tower Records liquidation sale back in Dec. 2006 and gave them as Christmas presents. Now, it'll cost ya 30 (used... probably a rental copy stolen off Netfix) 8)

Yeah man, I feel ya. I don't really collect movies anymore, but when NoShame went out of business my heart was broken. I got a lot of stuff I wanted when they were in print, but I still missed out on some classic stuff. Gah, I need more money to complete my Fenech collection!

To be honest I've mostly stopped buying movies with rare exceptions (Gojira on Criterion blu-ray later this month??!) Most movies don't need to be seen more than once (wouldn't have agreed with that back in the day, but I stand by it now), and netflix makes seeing a lot of these films convenient. With the death of the video store, the only way left to see more obscure movies is through piracy (and we will not discuss that here.)

If I like the artistic nature (music, action) of a movie I would most definitely watch it more than once. I have over 300 blu rays and have regularly re watched quite a few lately.

I just watched Christmas Carol, that should be banned over Xmas. Its morbid.

Well, I see a lot of movies and television shows as having some kind of artistic merit. A video is probably the cheapest art reproduction and form of entertainment I can afford, as opposed to buying scultures, framed paintings, studio photography, and going to music concerts. The other cheep art would be books and CDs.

I don't spend more than a few thousand per year on it either. So, while it may sound crazy and unreal that I'd spend $1,000-$2,000 on videos, I don't really have the same kind of debt I'd incur by blowing it all on booze, smokes, Vegas, fancy clothes and accessories, or a luxury automobile. I have over 1,000 DVDs, about 2,000 CDs, around 200 books (not counting university textbooks), and almost 100 video games: As weird as this sounds, I never experience a dull moment... I don't get bored. Ever. Hahahah 8)

Been meaning to watch Phenomena. I like the trailer for it and I'm a big fan of Suspiria.

But right now I'm about to watch Insidious on Netflix since I've read it's pretty decent and alot like Poltergeist, which I love.

Actually I used to have a huge video collection. Tons of VHS and DVDs, but with the whole advent of streaming movies my interest in collecting movies faded a bit. Also, I noticed that even while I was enthusiastic about purchasing movies, I still might only watch them two or three times. There are a handful of beloved movies that I feel required to own (in whatever format they come out in), but I've grown a lot more critical about collecting.

Perhaps I also need to specify that I have been an intense collector of music, movies and books my whole life (I have you beat xbl0x180, but only because I did radio for 5 years and ran a record label for 10...and because I was absurdly passionate about it.) Now I've slowly gone back more to reading instead of watching movies; and when I do sit down to watch films, a lot of them fail to hold my attention.

Maybe having a third of my movie and video game collection stolen made me rethink about the permanence of 'owning' films.

I feel like Argento lacks a perfect film, but Phenomena may be as close as it gets. The story holds together better than Supiria, but no color gels I'm afraid. It makes up for it with a lot more polish and liberal use of Iron Maiden in the soundtrack. Probably my favorite film by Argento, but the overlooked Tenebre (pure slasher, no supernatural elements) might be his most functionally sound.

Yeah, Phenomena is wayyy up there for me, mainly because of my infatuation with entomology. Opera is also way kinds of awesome with the metal soundtrack as well.

I know, three posts, but three totally different topics:

Just saw the fantastic Summer Wars (Mamoru Hosoda, 2009). Seriously one of the first films I've seen in a long time that made me remember how wonderful films can be. Emotionally manipulative but with the same honesty as Whisper of the Heart. Enormously playful, but serious enough to keep you entertained throughout. The contrast between virtual and traditional is toyed with masterfully. Though not developed with depth, Hosoda gives us just enough to make every member of the large family feel absolutely real--and herein lies the real strength of the film: Most of the characters have just enough space to play out their own little micro-story, and each of these then are smashed violently together into the absurdist tale that makes up Summer Wars. I've probably said too much here, but the tension between the sci-fi cartoon that makes up the surface story, and the touching melodrama that plays out between the all too familiar characters is precisely the game that Hosoda is playing at, and I think he scores a huge win.

I need to go see 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time', but seriously, more like this.

I can understand. I think part of my compulsion to collect stuff is just that: a compulsion to collect. The other part is what other collectros have described as "collecting parts of themselves." Sometimes, a person's collection is sort of a composite of who they are. Coincidentally, I began collecting animation and music because of nostalgic reasons - shows and songs I used to watch and listen to many years ago (those were happy times 8) ). It's impossible to recapture the past, but the stuff is very entertaining nonetheless.

I also don't give myself the illusion that I have the biggest collection of anything. I've seen private music collections that number in the tens of thousands of LPs and library video collections at the universities I've attended. Still, even if you own just a few items of the same thing, you're most likely a collectro hahah. In a website dedicated to niche collectros, it's not raer to read of other people's massive collections of insert items of interest. When it comes to normal people, though, I don't think we'll see households with more than a few DVDs, some more CDs, and maybe one or two consoles 8)

The ideas of "value" and "ownership" are ephemeral to me; it's not as if when I die, I can take all my stuff with me and enjoy it for eternity. Hence, I'm only interested in the "entertainment" value I place on something. What's the average life expectancy nowadays? If I'm lucky [and have excellent genetics], it'll be around 78, 79, maybe 80. In the grand scheme of things, this is nothing considering a third of it is spent asleep. Knowing this, I try to have something entertaining at all times. If I had part of my collection stolen, I'd hope they are entertained by it (hopefully more than I was by it).

Hey, at least you weren't mugged or injured. There will always be more stuff hahahah.

I'd say Dario Argento's best film is L'Uccello Dalle Piume De Cristallo/"The Bird With The Crystal Plumage," featuring a score by Ennio Morricone. It's his crowning achievement and probably one of the best Giallo films ever made. Suspiria was an excellent Gothic film with some memorable set designs and colour schemes; the Proggy music by Goblin was worth the price of admission.

From what I've seen, Lucio Fulci appears to be the one lacking the perfect film; maybe Zombie is his most representative of his best work. Personally, I loved Non Si Sevizia Un Paperino/"Don't Torture A Duckling." It helped that Barbara Bouchet was reeeeeal easy on the eyes 8)

Yeah, actually I hate to make it sound like 'ooh, I have a bigger collection'. Later on, you're collection starts becoming a burden. Not just physically keeping the stuff, but the sense that you should go back and watch/listen/read that. This is why I said that I would probably disagree with a younger version of me. Now the collecting thing grows tiresome.

Funny you mentioned The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. This isn't the one I haven't seen, and worth it probably for the Morricone score.

Finally watched 7 Doors of Death (aka The Beyond) just a few weeks ago. I've got the other two pieces of the Gates of Hell trilogy on my hard drive, but haven't gotten around to them yet. It wasn't bad, just a bit lacking in the acting department. Some pretty great imagery in there, like the milky eyed blind girl standing on what I assume is the Pontchartrain bridge. Pretty cool since that exact location is just a few miles directly south of me.

I need to find that one too. I meant to watch that right after I finished the Three Mothers trilogy but kind of had a bad taste in my mouth from Mother of Tears, which was so shitty. I understand that you can't really compare his recent works to the older stuff but after that, Jenifer, and Giallo I needed a break lol

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011).
Very intense, and well put together. Went to the theater for the first time in forever, but I desperately need to rewatch it, because with all the plot points coming together, I realized how much of the movie I hadn't paid enough attention to.

@CMoon
Also, yeah, I noticed a poster for that while I was there.
Shame Ghibli is the only company doing theatrical releases of 2D animated movies in the states, although considering Ghibli's high quality, it's not a terrible shame.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I'm going to have to comment on all these topics myself! Yeah, my collection is getting pretty overwhelming. I won't list how much crap I have, but sometimes I look at it as a crowning achievement and other times an impossible void to fill.
CMoon wrote:Funny you mentioned The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. This isn't the one I haven't seen, and worth it probably for the Morricone score.
Same here. Also never got a chance to see Four Flies on Grey Velvet. Maybe someday...

Don't Torture a Duckling is absolutely superb, as is New York Ripper with the creepiest killer ever. Gates of Hell and The Beyond are pretty much nightmare films. A lot of times they don't make a damned bit of sense, but are terribly effective and disturbing. Honestly, some of my favorite films of his are the non-horror ones like Four of the Apocalypse and Conquest. I don't know if it's factual, but it seems like John Woo got some inspiration from Massacre Time with Franco in the lead role: lot's of bullet ballet-esque gunfights with dual pistols and lots of white doves. 'Tis a shame the movie is kinda bomb, excluding the end.

My huge Italian film kick ended a couple of years ago, but the love will never die. I'm sure at some point I'll get back in the game and finally visit Lizard in a Women's Skin, Murder Rock and Cat in the Brain. Not enough damn time in life!

Speaking of nightmare films, I recently watched The Holy Mountain, which is flipping insane. I didn't even like it because it came off as horribly pretentious, but watched it 3 times anyway because I had to show my friends.

It's totally worth it for the scene where this girl fucks a mountain though.

Recent first time views also include the animations -

Fire and Ice
Fritz the Cat
Fantastic Planet

Still haven't seen Fire & Ice, but seen everything else on your list there (even Fucking Fritz the Cat.)

As far as Jordorowsky (Holy Mountain, El Topo), I can say he is an acquired taste. I think Holy Mountain is certainly the more accessible, but how can you use the word 'better' in relationship to these movies? I think maybe the ideas in El Topo will stick with me forever, where Holy Mountain seems more obvious in its themes. I can understand your view of not liking these movies. There was a time I was showing El Topo to a friend and felt like I hated this movie. But still part of me wants to keep going back and seeing what is in these films because they are extremely unique with no compromise for the audience.

I liked El Topo, but saw it more as a literal cheapie Western on the level of Dead Man and Greaser's Palace. It's Fernando Arrabal that never caught my interest. Cult Epics released two box sets of Arrabal's Surreal junk and I've only seen a few minutes of each on YouTube. Someday, maybe, but if I had more than one chance to see them and I didn't take any of them, then it's most likely not going to be seen.

What was Surreal was finding the Jodorowsky box set at the local Target stores here in SoCal. Holy mountain! I thought I'd never see the day. I had the Italian Raro Video bootlegs tiding me over until that time 8)

Ha, we both live in SoCal; yeah that and a billion other people. The Jodorowsky box was strangely mass marketed, so I understand seeing it in Amoeba, even Best Buy, but not Target. Heard of weirder things showing up in Walmart too. Guess sometimes the system just fucks up.

Was just talking to a friend on New Years about how awesome Fire and Ice is. I'm a pretty big fan of the original Fritz film, but the sequel depressed the hell out of me. Shame they never made an Omaha the Cat Dancer film

I've had many chances to see Jodorowsky, and while at one point in my life I was extremely interested, I can't really say I still feel as inclined to give him a chance. I dunno, I think I'm fine with the amount of early artsy-weird films I've seen through the years.

Nvmnd. It's sort of like they just looked up 'spooky' on Wikipedia and made a movie about whatever they saw. Throw in a bunch of noise scares and blam, you got yourself a picture. I don't see why this even made it to theaters.

I was interested because I read that there were scenes towards the climax which paralleled Poltergeist... in that the parents had to travel to the 'other side' to save their child. They didn't even try to make this look cool, they just turned the lights out and threw a green filter over the real world. Earlier I mentioned 'The Beyond' which I watched for similar reasons. Even though the final scenes of The Beyond were simplistic in terms of set design, the visuals they provided were solid. Insidious does nothing to match it's peers and comes off very cheap and amateur. I wish peeps would learn that fancy camera & sound work doesn't make up for a lack of everything else. This movie sold on the image of the lipstick demon alone.

El Topo struck a chord with me as it reminded me of my exposure to Catholicism. It's been always around me, but I've never been an insider. Thus watching El Topo I felt like during my infrequent church visits, or the way I felt watching documentaries about pilgrims' behaviour at some worship site on Sardinia, Balinese natives harming themselves with krises etc.
Best thing by Jodorowsky, however, would be the Metabarons comic books (better than Incal dare I say).
