EoSD is around the midrange for the series, I think. Things like PCB and MoF are easier, IN is pretty similar, and SA and particularly UFO I find are significantly tougher. I don't know much about 10D, but I've gathered it's on the easier side.

UFO Lunatic? Harder than EoSD Lunatic? Seriously? I've not done it myself (it won't run on my PC), but for survival, it just seems a matter of fetching red UFOs.

Having cleared it I can say UFO collection is definitely a lot harder than it looks, and the bullet density/speed is relatively high; I'd call it the hardest thing in the series by a significant margin. It's in a totally different league to EoSD Lunatic.

Also this.

Didn't play UFO so I can't tell, but SA lunatic is definitely harder than EoSD. TD lunatic is easy; it's only marginally harder than MoF, which is the easiest in the entire series.

I think EoSD Lunatic is a bit harder than SA's, since the bomb/extend system is very easy to abuse in SA without all that much practice.

There's no way in hell EoSD Lunatic is harder than UFO Lunatic though.

The average 1cc on UFO Lunatic is significantly tougher than any other game in the series, honestly. The inclusion of extra lives being almost purely red UFO collection doesn't really seem to offset the overall difficulty much, if you're going for your first 1cc then you're naturally going to get mostly reds, so the standard is already set like that. Most people play getting all reds anyways. As you keep going I'm sure you won't need as many as possible, but scoring well in UFO is considerably difficult in portion because of the gigantic loss in resources.

Elixir would be right in that EoSD pretty much just gives you a set amount of lives and bombs whereas UFO lets you accumulate things. Unless you're a tool, you're getting all the resources EoSD offers during a 1cc.

That being said, I always recommend PCB as an entrance to Touhou. Hell if it's the easiest, it's just one of my favorites and you don't need to pay attention to any side mechanics to play properly. It's also got the prettiest aesthetic imo.

Try Vimana. Pretty easy.
Yeah, you said it was boring as hell though. I am getting pretty close to the Truxton 1cc however. Once I become more conservative with bombs, I should be able to survive stage 5 much better. Hopefully. Batsugun, I'm not as enthusiastic about thanks to that jackass Madzella. Twin Cobra and Fire Shark have the same problem I had with Zero Wing; TOO BLOODY LONG. Not even a caffeine rush could keep me alert for as long as these games run!

Don't think I've run into any brickwalls in Hellfire yet, amazingly enough. Will try that 2nd stage 3 midboss again soon.

I really wish UFO worked with my PC. It loads but I don't see any window, like it's off screen but I can't access it.

Anyway, I have only one goal this year.

Reclaim #1 worldwide for Euridice, Nobilmente, Allemande and Doomsday in Hitogata Happa for PC.

It'll happen.

He's being realistic.

Plus with how good he already is at the mode, and the fact that there's a whole year for him to practice, I think there will be a western Ultra 1cc by the end of the year.

As for my Futari goals, it'll just be 1ccing modes harder than Original in both versions except Ultra cause that's too damn hard. And finally break 300 million on 1.5 Original.

By using save states I got better at dealing with that stupid boss, the trick is to try to stay in the middle of the screen at the bottom. When I dodge the pink bullets I'm looking for a hole and as soon as I find one I go back to the middle. In the beginning I would wait till I reached the edge of the screen to do this and that is a recipe for disaster.

It's funny how I hear Batsugun special is easy and all, but when I play it and remember these comments, all that comes to mind is "are you fucking kidding me ??!?". Then again I'm a shmup noob, but still I expected something a little less challenging. It's all good though, it's proving to be a very good game to improve your basic smhup skills.

I would recommend the hori real arcade pro vx sa, high quality stick with sanwa parts at a decent price. You can also easily replace the sanwa stick with a seimitsu one, which is generally considered better for shmups (but in the end they are both great and it's just a matter of taste).

You don't even really have to dodge. Just point blank Madzilla until you are about to get hit and then just bomb. As long you got the pig in Stage 2, you'll be able to get 7 by Jupiter. But seeing as how you are just trying to 1cc the first loop, you can probably ignore that trick anyways.

Batsugun SP is very generous with bombs, use em.

- Score 10 millions in Batrider and beat it
- Beat Battle Garegga

Gonna do both of them on videos. HOWEVER I should note, I won't begin practicing until May, reason? FINAL exams that will decide my future in terms of job possibilities. That's why I am not dedicating myself to anything but studying until then.

I just realized I barely played anything last year. Some RFJ, a very little bit of Eschatos, Raiden III, and um...

Yeah, I think that's it. I'm stealing your goal, broseph.

My main goal was to get my first 1cc, but I did that yesterday and did another today (Deathsmiles- Rosa and Windia, also DDP-R on novice but that doesn't count)

I want to get really involved with the genre seeing as I'm new to it, I want to learn all the terminology, techniques, scoring info e.t.c. I want to buy more games, mainly the region free games on the xbox 360. By the end of the year I want to be a knowledgeable, better than average player.

This genre is so much fun and I can't wait to play more games and start getting good scores!

1CC Ibara with a respectable score.
1CC Espgaluda 2 Arcade with a respectable score.
1CC Espgaluda 2 Black Label with a respectable score.

Sadly, because of how busy I'll be this year, there will barely be much time to beat any other demanding STG, I predict.

Battle Garegga 1CC and Ketsui both loops will probably have to wait.

On a positive note, all of my 2011 shmup goals were accomplished. I 1CC'ed Ketsui and Espgaluda. Strangely, Espgaluda took me longer and gave me much more trouble.

2012 Goals - To have another spell of unemployment and gain time to attack something.
Starting with getting my Prehistoric Isle 1 board back from CHI and utilising something basic that I missed before. (Now that I've seen RAX's replay).
Then on to a recent game.

I'm pretty happy with 2011, as it was really the first year I started playing shmups. In addition to a bunch of megadrive clears, I got DDP, ESPGaluda, and DOJ 1alls as well, though my scores have been unremarkable. Very satisfying though. For 2012 I have a few nearterm goals I've been practicing for, each of which should be doable with a bit more practice:

ESPrade 1cc (so closeeeee)
V-V 1cc (seems the easiest toaplan I've played so far)
Futari 1.5 Original 1cc (also close, 255m before Larsa, but I need to practice her...)
MMP 1cc (close in most respects, but st4 boss has walled me)

I'd also like to 1-all ketsui and dangun feveron, but those could take some time. Might work more on chaining DOJ stages 2 and 3, also. Sort of abandoned that after I got the 1-all...

Non-clear goals:

- Get my "home arcade" dialed in and eventually host small shmupmeets
- Convert a couple friends to shmupdom
- I've bought a bunch of books/project kits on electronics recently and hope to start understanding pcbs, pinball, and arcade hardware better in general
- translate some Japanese articles/interviews from the various Shooting Gamesides I've collected
- get back into ASM programming (z80) and study shmup design
shmuplations.com - translated game developer interviews and more

- Gundemonium Recollection 1cc demonic (with sarabande):
This is the big goal I'm setting for myself (I've allready passed stage 1 *flex*).
And after that get atleast top 10 in revised, unlimited and demonic with Sarabande and make people go wtf. :p

- Dodonpachi loop 1, 1cc.
Saviors, a modern vertical shoot 'em up.

Reach 2nd Loop of DDP
1CC Battle Garegga
1CC Mushi BL Maniac
1CC Muchi Muchi Pork

I guess that's enough for now.

1. Pink Sweets 1cc, at least 10 million, no infinite lives glitch
2. never play a shmup again, Bakraid western record and Garegga C- or D-score be damned.
