In 1988, my mother enjoyed playing a bird hunting game on my Commodore 64. She remembers a single screen outdoor scene containing a fixed hunter, shooting birds that passed overhead, and a dog that went left and right to retrieve the birds.
It was definitely a "lesser" game from pirate tapes or magazine disks, not an AAA purchase, and it used the keyboard and/or joystick, not a lightgun.
Looking around I found Gun Dogs (aka Duck Park) to be quite similar, but my mother definitely remembers a single-player game and no river in the middle.
I suspect Gun Dogs might have had a single-player predecessor, but unfortunately I also suspect my mother to remember the game poorly; when I showed her a Duck Hunt remake she took a while to recall that the game she played had no aiming.
Any suggestion, not only of what the lost hunting game might have been but also of other games in the same sub-sub-sub-genre for any platform?
