Re: Rayman Origins- Check it out!
Its too expensive.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I'll get more good out of this than all of the blockbuster movie-games that are churned out these days.

Re: Rayman Origins
I'm both proud and ashamed to say that I'm two Cheevos away from making this my first ever 1000/1000 game...not sure if I'm up to going all the way, though, since I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what one of them wants me to do. In any event, it's weird that "medaling" on a level doesn't seem to affect anything, at least in this day and age...guess it's just a "do it for your own sense of accomplishment" sort of thing, which doesn't pop up too often.
There's some truth to this, though personally I found the structure forgiving enough that you usually don't get sent back too far - I can definitely see how some players might not go for this, though, as some of the later areas have a "Super Meat Boy lite" feel to them.mostly you are just running from place A to place B exactly in the way that designer intended, or you die.

Re: Rayman Origins
I like the DKC and Mario-Games but I have to say Rayman Origins is an absolutly great platformer.
The controls are perfect and it`s challenging, especially you want to fill up all the medals and get all the speedrun- and toon-trophies.I finish the game today and I will keep going on to complete the medals.
Donkey Kong Country Returns is my all-time favourite jump `n run and (in my opinion)it deserves a 10 out of 10
Rayman Origins ---> 9/10 ...yes!
My english isn`t that good...sorry!

Re: Rayman Origins- PS3, Xbox 360
A couple of questions:
What is the difference between using analogue stick and d-pad? Does the stick register different speeds? Is there a run button for both control options?
(I don't like games where you have to press the run button constantly. Controls for Yoshi's Island were perfect for example without stupid run button...)
Did anyone play the wii version? How does it measure up? Thinking of picking that one up (only have a wii at the moment) but don't like the idea of not having the definite version. Advantage may be the decent classic controller for wii...
Cheers

Re: Rayman Origins- PS3, Xbox 360
I personally disagree on this one, as I like having the ability to adjust my speed/jump instantly, as opposed to only having one "setting" or having to build up a truckload of momentum to deal with certain obstacles...that's just me, though.Spacehog wrote:Controls for Yoshi's Island were perfect for example without stupid run button...)
As for your questions, I've only played Rayman with a d-pad (a different one than the 360 stock controller), though I'd assume that both the stick and pad utilize the run button (which isn't constantly necessary, though you'll obviously need it for speed trophies and such). Haven't tried the Wii version to compare to the 360 edition I own.
I could test out the "run button theory" and post afterwards, if you like.
EDIT: Just gave the game a quick try with the regular 360 controller, and it's the same as with the d-pad, you'll need the run button.
Re: Rayman Origins- PS3, Xbox 360
Wife bought this for me for Xmas... I am so glad she picked it over Uncharted 3. I would have been happy either way but you rarely see 2D Platform games anymore so I'm glad this was one of the games she picked out for me
I haven't played it yet but judging based on youtube videos I know I will enjoy it!

I played the Wii version. It looks and sounds basically identical. I'd recommend a hi-def version though, because sometimes Rayman is so damn small, that it pays to have that extra clarity. No joke.

Thanks for replies!
Some thoughts concerning run button: It may make sense when d-pad is the only option but with an analogue stick I don't see the advantage as running could just be done through pushing the stick furthest. I guess it boils down to digital on-off being more precise which is more important in shooters compared to platformers I think. Another option I would like is to reverse the run button, i.e. make run default and slow when the button is pressed. Especially in super meat boy that would have been awesome I thought...

Re: Rayman Origins- PS3, Xbox 360
Those who do more PC gaming than I do might be interested to hear that the upcoming PC version of Origins will, unlike a lot of Ubisoft stuff, be DRM-free.
And, like most DRM-free titles, will probably end up used as an excuse for further DRM implementation when everyone pirates it.

That's a breath of fresh air.
I started playing the original on PlayStation some months back and didn't get far into it. "Here are some lives. You lost them already? Too bad, no more lives for you." Dumb gameplay too.

Re: Rayman Origins- PS3, Xbox 360
Unless Rayman Legends renders it obsolete (I have no idea), must-play indeed.
Wasn't really seeing it on screenshots or gameplay videos, but having sat down to play it on Wii the other night, I ought to admit it felt pretty fresh.
Not yet sure why, mind. These days, when I find a game compulsive enough to play it for over an hour, but keep asking "am I enjoying myself?" - this could mean anything. Although the game engine is obviously slick as hell, I'm not even sure how much I like the controls (my preferences in this regard tend to vary).
So maybe what warrants a recommendation is that it doesn't seem "retro" whatsoever. About how many 2D side- or upwards-scrollers developed in this century can you honestly say that? It's as if the future Neo Geo and Saturn anticipated had become a thing. Last game that made this kind of impression on me was Odin Sphere (before that: Disciples II and Divine Divinity*)).
Wii version looks compromised (I found the font barely legible in 480i, 4:3 comes with borders and the way this camera usually zooms out - plenty of detail merge into background), but who knows, maybe it gives those graphics a less "vector" semblance. It sure is nice to play using a CCP, but so can be done on PC via adapter after all.
*) Except the character animation in Divine Divinity does look "retro", so it's more of an honourable mention.

Wouldn't say "obsolete", since it plays much the same, but the visual crew worked out a lot of the kinks in the UbiArt toolset for the sequel, which IMO looks a lot better than Origins; I personally place that one on my list of best-looking games I've played.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Unless Rayman Legends renders it obsolete (I have no idea), must-play indeed.

Re: Rayman Origins- PS3, Xbox 360
Been wondering... Could not only the gameplay, but every single animation here be 60 fps? With vectors, it would make sense, possibly giving the game its distinct visual slickness of which standard YouTube trailers could not have been representative.
What needs to be done with this tech is a 1vs1 fighting game (inevitably infuriating the "purists", but what if a faithful port of some classic turned out perfectly playable?), just to get the point across.

I FINALLY got Legends. I was downright determined to wait until the price dropped. Which took a surprisingly long time.BulletMagnet wrote:Wouldn't say "obsolete", since it plays much the same, but the visual crew worked out a lot of the kinks in the UbiArt toolset for the sequel, which IMO looks a lot better than Origins; I personally place that one on my list of best-looking games I've played.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Unless Rayman Legends renders it obsolete (I have no idea), must-play indeed.
The demo really didn't do it justice. I liked it a whole lot. Probably better than Origins.
And no, Legends does not render Origins "obsolete". There's a number of things that are in Origins, that are only in Origins. And it has some REALLY tough sections, that are not duplicated in Legends.

One more thing - much to my amusement, gibberish they speak here sounds the same as in Rayman 2: The Great Escape (PC&DC versions to be exact). Those who bitch about such a thing are... not my kind of people I guess (I liked the gibberish in Ōkami too). In Rayman, it sounds like pretend English, which I think took the kind of talent most grown-ups have all but lost.

I believe that in Origins they're speaking Pig Latin; I forget what they did in Legends.

I learned about Pig Latin from a romance (ladies' book) we read during summer holidays spent camping. It was about WWII American pilots after their emergency landing in the Republic of Ireland...

Re: Rayman Origins- PS3, Xbox 360
I've yet to play co-op, but here's the thing. Mario Kart Wii and SMG assured me that I don't want any more voiced Mario games on my Wii. Enough was enough. Decision taken, due to some things I read about New Super Mario Bros. Wii, it had almost sneaked into my backlog still. See, I could use a platform game easier to play in co-op than singleplayer (like Kuri Kuri Mix, only 2D) for certain social reasons, but Mario - eurgh, but then again - co-op-centric... 'Twas all prior to Super Mario 3D World which looks fantastic enough for a franchise reboot, if not 2D anymore, but we're talking Wii games here.
Now it seems Rayman Origins co-op is about to be just what doctor ordered in that respect. I still have my reservations about the game's attempts to be funny (more plausible than Rayman 3, less so than 2), but at least I can bear the voices in this one.
So I'm gonna make sure we play some co-op here soon.
