Thanks, I thought I might see you around here. The NG boards were getting a bit stale, so this was a nice breath of fresh air.ResOGlas wrote:Welcome to the "other" forums. Well, I believe that Aero Blasters was made for the TG-16 hardware. The Genesis version was very plain, less colors, less scrolling tricks. Also on the Genesis version was the horrible music (the TG-16 version was better).BrianC wrote:Watch your language!Seven Force wrote:I'm actually planning to get this game soon, but I've seen no indication why the PCE version would be so much better than the MD one. STAY WITH THE TG-16 VERSION!Actually, I want to know what is wrong with the Genesis version too.
I just belive it just plays better on the TG-16.
If I was you BrianC, play a lot of the TG-16 version of Aero Blasters, then play the Genesis version of it. You will see a lot of differences.
The Genesis version plays a lot slower than the TG-16 version, also on the Genesis version there are more powerup bots than the TG-16 version.

The Tg-16 version does have more colours than the Genesis version, but not that much more for it to stand out.
However, the Genesis version has an extra background plane in some levels (more noticeable in level 2) & the background in level 2 in more detailed.
The music is also better on the Genesis, as most FM based tracks compared to the PSG TG-16 for that matter….
Also the ship’s control is slightly better on the Genesis imo.
They’re both very good arcade ports though….
You should get both.
These are the best Genesis Shooters imo:
Should be in every self respecting Gamer's Genesis collection.
Horis:
Aero Blasters
Battle Mania 2
Eliminate Down
Gaiares
Gynoug / Wings of Wor
Heavy Unit
Hellfire
Sol-Deace
Thunder Force III
Thunder Force IV
Zero Wing
Vertical:
Fire Shark
MUSHA / Aleste
Raiden Trad
Truxton
Twin Hawk
V-Five / Grind Stormer
It surprises me tha Gynoug / Wings of Wor doesn't get any attention around here, as it's one of the best Genesis shooters by far!
Eliminate Down is the shooter with the best graphics on the Genesis.

Both Genesis and TG versions of Air Buster are excellent. Controls are pretty much the same except in the arcade you had to tap the fire button, on the TG you don't, and on the Genesis you don't but you can if you want to. Which music is better is a matter of taste, but the Genesis version uses stereo while the TG version is only mono.

steel empire is incredible, but imagine that being your most difficult clear so far...
also, i have some bitching about fireshark i want to get out of the way. i'm irritated by the weapon arrangement. the Vulcan is too weak to begin with but is my favorite when powered up, the Laser is useless, and the fire is really powerful and spreads really thoroughly.
my actual complaint is the game makes it difficult to keep your weapons (not just by killing you either). i can't remember the stage exactly but they throw a whole line of enemies at you that shoot hell at you if kept alive, and release Green powerups if they are killed (assuming not always this way, but i always have Blue or Red at this point). i get flashbacks of Salamander playing through this bit...
in all fairness, i love the game though, way better than Truxton (on genesis anyway). it is also rather fun when i can stand up to the (relative) challenge of dodging all the bouncing Green powerups, and the enemy fire that is coming my way.
and a big-a thank you to nemo for the exposure.

the, admittedly minor, scoring opportunity this presents is interesting though. i hoard bombs and often don't react fast enough to use them when necessary. with this game its easy to use those last precious moments to throw one out for a few extra desperation points.captain ahar wrote: on fire shark:

Sorry for keeping the off-topic discussion... I always keep hearing how Turrican 3 is a port of Mega-Turrican, and that's something I always believed too. But if you check Factor 5 site, from what they say, it seems both games were done at the same time. Mega Turrican only got a worldwide release in 1994, while Turrican 3 got it in 1993.BrianC wrote:Mega Turrican is not Turrican II. It actually came to the Genesis first and was ported to the Amiga as Turrican 3. Also, the original Turrican also had the same type of collision detection as the Genesis version. The main problem with the Genesis version is the poor music conversion, but the gameplay of the original is intact. The Genesis Turrican is also the only complete console port of the game. The Genesis Turrican II is Universal Soldier. Some really stupid changes were made like removing the shmup levels and replacing them with lame new levels and changing the graphics, but other than that the gameplay is actually intact. Mega Turrican does rock quite heavily, though.Seven Force wrote: Mega Turrican - Superb port of the Amiga classic Turrican II. Don't get it mixed up with "Turrican" which is a terrible port of the first game.
And why did no one mentioned Battle Squadron? It's not as good as the Amiga version, but still is one of the best shmups of the MD library IMO. (as far as verts go, I think only MUSHA tops it)

Well these are better Vertical Shooters for the Genesis than Battle Squadron imo:
Fire Shark
GRIND Stormer / V-Five
Raiden Trad
Truxton
Also, Twinkle Tale & Undead Line, are two great unknown Genesis shooters that deserve more attention.
They both have a heroic fantasy theme.
About MEGA Swiv... I find the colours, level layout & Laser beams of the AMIGA version superior to the Genesis port, but the Genesis & SNES version did have music which the AMIGA version lacked for some strange reason?!

You probably shouldn't throw out a bomb since I believe you can carry them over to your next life (sheeeit, I need to go back and play this game.)

I think Mega Swiv is completely different from the original Swiv. Other than being a vertical shmup and having both a chopper and a jeep, it's a completely new game.Seven Force wrote:I wasn't too enthralled by Battle Squadron. As far as Amiga ports go I remember thinking that Mega SWIV was much better. Can't really tell you why though, I'll have to play them again.
Man, I can't believe I NEVER played Lords of Thunder, after all those years.

I know what you mean, and I complained about the same thing at one point, but you're better off just snagging all the powerups, unless you don't want all those bonus points. The green weapon isn't as useless as you think, anyway. It's fast and powerful, and it has a bit of an arc to stop enemies from coming at you from the sides. It actually protects your sides more effectively than a max powered flame weapon (which leaves you vulnerable thanks to its sweeping action).my actual complaint is the game makes it difficult to keep your weapons (not just by killing you either). i can't remember the stage exactly but they throw a whole line of enemies at you that shoot hell at you if kept alive, and release Green powerups if they are killed (assuming not always this way, but i always have Blue or Red at this point). i get flashbacks of Salamander playing through this bit...

Ok, just got Battle Squadron, Truxton, Arrow Flash and Burning Force off ebay for £7.50 (excluding postage).
Now I've played Arrow Flash lots in the past and quite liked it, and played Battle Squadron on emulators (think its a bit crap to be honest).
So I was wondering, what's Burning Force like and how's the port of Truxton?

Burning Force is an excellent Namco arcade port. It's a bit like Space Harrier (pseudo-3D shooter) but half of the time your on a hoverbike that stays on the ground. Very fun game, and looks really good.theevilfunkster wrote:So I was wondering, what's Burning Force like and how's the port of Truxton?
Truxton is a good port, I actually prefer it over the PCE version. As for the game itself, it's mostly long and hard.

Burning Force rocks! The hoverbike levels are very shmup-ish since up and down on the controller is pressed to adjust speed and you can't fly. The boss levels switch to Space Harrier style with flight. There are shmup style power ups in the game too. The game also has a very cool main character. The music in the game also rocks.Seven Force wrote:Burning Force is an excellent Namco arcade port. I didn't like Insector X at all. The graphics are really terrible IMO, and gameplay is incredibly bland.
I guess they were just warming up for Steel Empire, which is a favorite of mine.
Bad Omen (i.e. Devilish) is another great Hot-B game for MD (but not a shmup). I think I'll actually order the DS rerelease of Devilish next week.
