brilliant dreamcast shmups list

Post by whity »

yo shmuppers.
i just got the dreamcast emulator 'chankast' yesterday, it is brilliant- my first ikaruga experience was incredible. i was wondering what other dc shmups are worth getting. i am currently getting zerogunner 2 and gigawing 2. get back, y'all!

The DC's shmup library is pretty small, but most of the shmups for it are pretty good. If you like Giga Wing 2 you might want to try the original GW and Mars Matrix, and if you don't have Shikigami no Shiro 2 on another system that's also available on DC. A lot of people here like Border Down a lot (though I personally am not quite as crazy about it); there are also mixed opinions on Chaos Field and Trizeal. Most people like Gunbird 2, though, so if you like Psikyo go for that.

yo, dolphin. buy some fricking games.

anyway, Trizeal is really cool. and gunbird 2 as well. further on i can't say, aside from "emulation is stupid" (particularly in this case, cmon $50 dreamcast+free boot+$50 in games=distilled fun).
I have no sig whatsoever.

That was my point... Stop being a c**t and buy these shooters so people will make more.

I can understand the old Mame argument but you can still buy Ikaruga in the shops!

and we are not talking about a $250 PCB that will cost $20 bucks to ship. stop being lame lame-o.

*captain ahar can't drop it, it refuses to be dropped, it is distinctly anti-drop, you might say it sort of a policy of sorts*

Interestingly, Chankast doesn't support original GD-Roms. It only supports backups (I think), and images.

Not giving an opinion, merely stating that. That is all.

chankast sucks, unless it's been updated without my awareness. At least for Ikaruga. It ran border down ok, and capcom vs. snk2. I have legits of all those and those are the only ones I bothered to try, too impatient nowadays to be downloading files 100's of megs in size.

Anyways, good deadcast shooters:

Gunbird 2
Mars Matrix
Border Down
Gigawing 2 (I haven't played it much, Rando gave it a 9/10 though I think)
Ikaruga has excellent atmosphere/music, some of the best, gameplay could be better, but it's original at least. Worth trying.

i understand about emulating a dreamcast- i used to own one about 3 years ago, i think through these games i will get down to getting a 2nd hand system. theyre pretty hard to come by where i am though. with internet auctions it should be easy enough. thanks, fellas. sorry i upset you, cat pirate.

Do any of those DC emulators run like Magic Engine, where you can pop your GD-ROM disc into your CD-ROM drive and play off of the original disc? Would be great for DC/NAOMI review screencaps (yeah, for those of us w/o VGA capture cards, heh [the Sheep actually had one, for a while  ]).

Shikigami no Shiro II and Chaos Field should be on your list.

Honestly, I wouldn't go for Shikigami on DC. After playing the gamecube version, the soundtrack and control which the gamecube controller just makes the DC version obsolete.

Btw, Ikaruga runs like a raped prostitute on anything that isn't gamecube or dreamcast.

whats the difference between mars matrix on mame and mars matrix on dreamcast? also, ikaruga runs suprisingly well on my pc - around 45 fps, it slows down a bit at the beginning of stage 2 where all the buildings are at. the worst thing ive experienced about it is the electro crates' beams in stage 2 are invisible, the rotating ones make it nearly impossible to come out unscathed. cheers for the list

Mars Matrix has scaled up graphics on Dreamcast, but a better soundtrack and a lot of extras.

Ikaruga on Chankast, when I tried it, had screwed-up visuals and poor sound and music, (since it uses DC sound to generate music). It was due more to the emu not being finished than my PC, which is above the necessary spec. (2.8 ghz P4, radeon 9600).

Not to mention that you have the option of using more than one button for all the different attacks and such.

I guess it depends on what country you live, but second hand dreamcasts can be had in the US for dirt cheap. There was a point not too many months ago you could get a used DC from Gamestop for $10. There appear to be dozens of them on ebay for ~$30-40.

Not to hastle you Whity. But as I'm sure you know, the DC is a great console and definitely worth owning (maybe more than one). So you'll probably be thrilled to know they aren't as hard to come by as you think.

i live in new zealand. ive found 2 dreamcasts for sale in a used goods store, but it is almost impossible to get hold of a memory card, which is pretty damn annoying. my best bet is ebay australia on that one. the consoles are going for $70NZ (around $45ish american i think) or $90NZ for one with a vga cable. just letting the more hostile people know..... you punks.

Tragic! I don't know if all the systems use the same memory cards, but here in the US you can get them for dirt.

sounds like a good deal for the DC. VGA is very nice too.

here's my top 3

1. Gunbird 2 (powaaahh UP!)
2. Trizeal (GOD: "I shot it quickly, and it was good")
3. Ikaruga ('I am not regret' to buy this game)
