Looking for Online Multiplayer shmups.
Looking for Online Multiplayer shmups.
A friend and I want some shmups to play online together for the PC, preferably on Steam. Any suggestions?
Re: Looking for Online Multiplayer shmups.
Only thing you will get on steam is GundeadliGne, And last time i tried it didn't work so well. Great game though.

“Approach your target and attack. Your mission starts now. Are you ready?”

Mame with kaillera.
Also there's an mmo, Valkyrie Sky, but it's pretty mediocre as a shmup

@Uzumakijl Thanks, I'll try the demo and see how that goes.
@BeruBeru: I've got problems with arcade emulators: I don't know which games work with which version of MAME. I did see something about ShmupMame, should I use that?

You definitely need to learn to solve that problem, you're missing out on so much. Look up MAMEHub for MAME multiplayer. It works based on the newest versions of MAME so if you can figure out how to get ROMs to work on the new versions you'll have no problems with MAMEHub. If you still have issues with ROMs try ClrMamePro (I think that's what its called - I dont use it myself since I dont need it).Rudedoggx wrote:@Uzumakijl Thanks, I'll try the demo and see how that goes.

It doesn't really count as a shmup but you could always try signing up to get into AirMech.

+1 for MAMEHub.BPzeBanshee wrote: Look up MAMEHub for MAME multiplayer.
The latest version worked really well for me even with high pings

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Not Steam, but try Twinkle Star Sprites (Neogeo / MVS game) using nFBA or Supercade (Supercade is a sort of nice frontend / matchmaking tool for nFBA).
Another common recommendation is Change Air Blade, although that one can (afaik) be played online only through MAME=>Kaillera/Mamehub, which lags much more than nFBA/Supercade.

I've never had any problem with lag in TSS via MAMEHub. In fact I've had some pretty intense competitive matches.

Thanks, I got MAMEHub working. I really like Raiden, can anyone recommend games that are similar to this series?

Anything Raiden FightersRudedoggx wrote:Thanks, I got MAMEHub working. I really like Raiden, can anyone recommend games that are similar to this series?
Viper Phase 1
Twin Cobra
Xeno Fighters R (note that's not a MAMEHub game, but available on this very forum)
Anything by Psikyo (they're on the more manic side of the spectrum vs the bullet hell side like Cave)

Re: Looking for Online Multiplayer shmups.
While it is probably playable (I used to play it on good ol' Kaillera), from what I have seen, Mamehub gives a similar feeling (gameplay / input lag) to Kaillera.MathU wrote:I've never had any problem with lag in TSS via MAMEHub. In fact I've had some pretty intense competitive matches.
From my experience, when you get used to play games on nFBA/Superplay/GGPO, going back to Kaillera (or MAMEhub) really feels like a huge step back. Unfortunately they are the only solution for quite many games.
If you are from western Europe we could play some TSS matches on MAMEhub - it would not hurt me to try it for a second time - but I know what to expect

I'm in UK and I played Viper Phase One with someone in USA and ping >170ms with no perceptible problemsKeade wrote: If you are from western Europe we could play some TSS matches on MAMEhub - it would not hurt me to try it for a second time - but I know what to expect

Re: Looking for Online Multiplayer shmups.
All netplay solutions have input lag. That is the very nature of inserting a network model into an emulator. I find it odd you would liken it to Kaillera, because MAMEHub's input system is really a giant step above Kaillera's. Maybe you caught MAMEHub during a bad time in development? The netcode is still being actively reworked.Keade wrote:While it is probably playable (I used to play it on good ol' Kaillera), from what I have seen, Mamehub gives a similar feeling (gameplay / input lag) to Kaillera.

My friend and I were having some pretty bad input lag on MAMEHub While trying to play Raiden, and we live down the street from each other. I had my port forwarded and he didn't, could that be the reason?
Re: Looking for Online Multiplayer shmups.
No, only the person hosting the game needs to have the port forwarded.Rudedoggx wrote:My friend and I were having some pretty bad input lag on MAMEHub While trying to play Raiden, and we live down the street from each other. I had my port forwarded and he didn't, could that be the reason?
