a few general questions about the CBS-8220
a few general questions about the CBS-8220
For reference, the device is this.
- can the device be powered via the PSP AC adapter?
- is it necessary to switch between the 2 VGA outputs or are they always active?
- does the VGA pass-thou work when the device is fully powered off?
Finally, i'm looking for a list of systems/consoles that can provide clean sync without modding or sync strippers/cleaners, so they can be connected directly to the RGBS input.

yes but i think the connector will be too small and won't fit the one on the scaler. you might have to cut it off and solder a bigger one, eadmaster wrote: - can the device be powered via the PSP AC adapter?
or solder the cables directly to the board.
always active. at least on mine.eadmaster wrote: - is it necessary to switch between the 2 VGA outputs or are they always active?
quite sure not. but for being absolutely sure i'd have to recheck.eadmaster wrote: - does the VGA pass-thou work when the device is fully powered off?
is this really important for you ? making the diy stripper takes a few minutes and costs almost nothing and you will be free to use nearly every console made.eadmaster wrote: Finally, i'm looking for a list of systems/consoles that can provide clean sync without modding or sync strippers/cleaners, so they can be connected directly to the RGBS input.

Re: a few general questions about the CBS-8220
The answer to your first question is yes. The connector on the PSP PSU is quite tight but if you wiggle it in, you're good to go. Also, both vga outs are always active. And your third question is a no.
Re: a few general questions about the CBS-8220
Does it look like it's possible to solder wires to the menu buttons and use regular push buttons mounted elsewhere? I would like to build it into a super gun and place the menu buttons on the outside of that.

sure is. i'm in the midst of putting this + stripper + scanline generator in an old tv-tuner case myself.emphatic wrote:Does it look like it's possible to solder wires to the menu buttons and use regular push buttons mounted elsewhere? Re: a few general questions about the CBS-8220
Thanks for confirming! I'll be putting mine into a DVD-player that just bit the dust. Gonna put voltage diplays into the LED display window and use the front buttons (hopefully) for the scaler's menu buttons.

Re: a few general questions about the CBS-8220
well i would love to hack the lcd display and use it for showing which input is used but that's very unlikely.
i'll be happy if i correctly hack all the inputs and outputs on the back of it, use the front buttons and maybe
use the original psu.

Thanks for your answers!
I'm also interested to know if the YPbPr component transcoder performs as well as the HDBOXPRO.
About consoles compatibility, i've found this page quite enlightening:
- NTSC SNES, PAL/NTSC MegaDrive and NTSC N64 RGB-modded can output composite sync directly, so no sync stripping is required;
- PAL SNES and PAL Gamecube DO require sync stripping.
(correct me if i am wrong)
Ok, building a sync stripper is not a big deal. Btw, once i've attached it to a female SCART can i connect BOTH kind of systems (i mean, those who require sync stripping and those who don't)?

Re: a few general questions about the CBS-8220
afaik it performs the same as the hdbox pro with the difference that it creates errors with 240p as it has no "motion level" control. for example at the beginning of espgaluda - the shadows underneath the ships. shouldn't concern you if you want to use a scanline generator afterwards.I'm also interested to know if the YPbPr component transcoder performs as well as the HDBOXPRO.
i can only assure that the gamecube does.- PAL SNES and PAL Gamecube DO require sync stripping.
Re: a few general questions about the CBS-8220
I thought of something... Is the output refresh rate dependent on the input or does this board change the refresh rate? For example if I choose to output in 480p, will all games be in 60hz even if the game is running in 55hz for example?
I'm not going to be playing any Raiden Fighters titles through this (I remember reading that they can be problematic at least when you try to record them with capture cards), but I would be sad to put money and time into a supergun project only realize it won't support all JAMMA games I wanna play on it, especially when I already have to JAMMA cabinets.

The GBS8220 converts to 60Hz.
