Shmups... why do you enjoy them?

Here we go again.

Shmups.. are they your favourite genre of games? Are they the only genre of games that you play?

What is it about shmups that you enjoy? What is it about that 30 minutes of gameplay that makes you come back time and time again?

Are you a completionist? Do you have to 1CC a particular game and that's what compels you to play, or is a casual couple of credits here and there enough to satisfy you regardless of how well you do?

Do you enjoy all sub-forms of shmups (ie: danmakus, scroll-em-ups etc) or do you have one that you stick to with the exclusion of all others?

For me, I enjoy danmakus more than any other genre. I enjoy score-based gaming as a way of competition. I'm also a big racing game fan who loves time-trials and I guess score in shmups is analogous to time in time trials. I enjoy in some aesthetic sense the patterns of bullets, and finding the "weaknesses" in them. I also enjoy the more eastern inspired culture/artisty of shmups, whether it's lolis or some sort of mecha-robot-scheme.

I enjoy the genre because it actually challenges me as a player to grow. It actually requires time and skill.

I quite enjoy when a game can kill me 30+ times on the same stage, while still being possible.

It's been adequately demonstrated that Larsa is not some sort of irresistable force that automatically kills you - she just requires practice and memorization. And yet, despite many members going out of their way to help you, you complain about the exact same things.

It's not a case of people not being friendly, it's a case of people running out of patience. Believe it or not, there is a finite amount of advice that we can give before the rest is up to you. Whether or not that advice leads you to be successful really depends on how much attention you pay to it, and how capable you are with the genre.

There's no point in opening any more threads on the topic, as ultimately they're all about your struggle to progress (no matter how they're phrased) and that means we're just beating around the same old bush. Danmaku's are hard, I struggled to make headway with them for years too, but it's something you just have to commit to.

A little less talk, a little more action and all that.

The best thing to do would be to disappear with everything that you've gleaned, put it into practice, and if you still feel it can't be done, move on to something else.

This isn't a bad question. It'd be interesting to find out why different people like shmups and how they approach them. For me, I like the challenge as well as the aesthetics. I won't play for score on most games, but usually just try to see how close I can come to a 1cc.

One thing that makes the genre very addictive is that there are many challenges that appear impossible the first time you see them, but then you break through that barrier, something clicks. And, out of the blue, it starts to make sense. This is most true of manic shmups.

In non-manics, I enjoy trying to figure out the broad strategy-- where to conserve and use bombs, which weapons to use where, and how to approach bosses.

But one of my favorite aspects of shmups is that they are still rooted in classic gaming values. They aren't games which anybody can beat-- and, as an average player, I am ok with this (hey, I can swallow my pride and use a continue if I really want to see that ending!). Likewise, there are hardly ever any challenges which are just chance. There aren't many designs where the creators throw cheap death at you and then make it up to you because you can autosave anywhere. Mechanics which encourage similar bad design (such as lifebars) are discouraged by the community because there is an understanding that fairness is key: Players should succeed or fail based on their skill or strategy. While in many genres your character improves, in shmups, the player him/herself improves. There is also an emphasis on replayability in the form of scoring.

This is in stark contrast to mainstream game design which strives to deliver a long, finishable, lowest common denominator cinematic experience, and little else. The goal is, in way too many games, to "see everything", and then return the game to the store.

I like shmups (particularly cave shmups) because they're wayyyy over the top. in difficulty, in weapons, in explosions, in everything. they're gorgeous, and they just make you feel damn good for playing them!!!

I enjoy shoot-'em-ups for various reasons. One reason that came to mind was "nostalgia." Some of the first video games I ever played and kept playing were shoot-'em-up related (i.e., Exerion, Galaga, Time Pilot, Gyruss, 1942, and Commando... I know, I know... the last one is run-'n-gun). Another component for a good shoot-'em-up has to be the music, which matches the action on screen. It's hard to find a good shoot'-em-up that doesn't have a good music score. It's also the kind of game that doesn't require playing against others or investing a ton of time in one run (you can spend a lot of time in order to become the best at it, but it's not necessary). I don't care for story, elaborate cut-scenes, or playing with a buncha others on-line. I play casually, so it fits my criteria for brief and entertaining

As for shmups that I really love.. I don't know. I like Triggerheart, I though Under Defeat was good for a game that isn't really bullet-hell. I can't give you a massive list. Other than afew that I've played over the years most of my experience is with the DC titles and the xbox games.
