I have probably 50ish games across various formats that I haven't seen the credits for, but only because they were purchased for low prices and often second hand. If I buy a game new then I am pretty sure that I will like it and will often concentrate on it exclusively until it is finished.

My problem is that as I get older I am more and more prone to replay games over and over. I also have a taste for long RPGs and endlessly playable arcade and music games, extending shelf lives drastically!

Also to all the cautious people who buy one game at a time, sometime you see a bargain or a game has a small print run or you want to support the developer with a full price purchase at a sub-optimal time or..... etc. Do you never fall for this logic?

Yeah, my backlog is pretty damn big, but at the same time, I've been buying games regularly since 1995. A lot of that stuff is stuff I bought used or on clearance throughout various generations. I also have a penchant for long RPGs and increasingly less time to play them in. I vacillate wildly from one genre to the next and back, then out of gaming entirely and into one of my other hobbies for a while (comics, books, movies and TV shows). I've also taken up *gasp* physical activity....

Simply put, more media comes out than I can feasibly assimilate at any given time. And it's only getting worse. I've slimmed down my collection a lot and as I play stuff, anything I decide I don't like gets sold. But a lot of times it's hard to pass up a good deal when it sweeps past you, so I always end up with far more than I can play. Honestly, right now, I currently own more media than I can realistically finiish in the rest of my natural life. If I tried to finish, every game, book, audio book, comic, show, movie, and album I own (excluding the stuff I have already finished)...just once, I bet I couldn't do it in my lifetime. That's assuming I quit work and did nothing but absorb media full time every waking minute. Just in MP3s alone, not including physical albums I have, I have literally 49 DAYS of music, assuming I listened to it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week non-stop without sleeping. And that's the fastest and easiest media I own to blow through.

Should I just stop and say enough is enough? I have enough media for the rest of my life, why should I buy more? Maybe...I don't know. But I like to have a little of everything on hand for whatever mood I happen to be in. We live in the most media-rich environment that has ever existed in the whole of human history. I for one don't mind having a backlog. I hope someday I'll utilize most of it, but it's nice to have the option.

Thought I would resurrect this horror show of a thread after spending some time sorting out my game collection this morning. I decided to make a list of things to play next year and ended up with the following two lists.

1) Games I either haven't finished, haven't started or played so long ago that they might as well be new. These games need to be finished to the credits, but some of them look so good I expect to play them through a few times.

King's Field 4
Dragon Age 2
Star Wars KOTOR
Jade Empire
Persona 4
Dragon Quest 8
Xenoblade Chronicles
SMT: Nocturne/Lucifer's Call
Resonance of Fate
Eternal Sonata
Last Remnant
Baldur's Gate saga
Final Fantasy 12
Enchanted Arms
Zack and Wiki
God Hand
Okami
Global Defence Force
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Madworld
Ninja Gaiden 2
Dead Space
Deadly Premonition
Dark Void
Bionic Commando (Capcom 3D one)
Devil May Cry
GTA San Andreas and 3
Darkess
Resident Evil 4
Wild Arms 4
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Tales of Eternia
Castlevania SOTN
Popolocrois
Disgaea 2
Deus Ex

2) Games that I have concrete plans to play again:

SSF4 - get better
Monster Hunter Tri - Finish up to the end of HR online
Super Mario Galaxy - more stars
GH, RB, DJHero, DJ Max, Gitaroo, Beats - more score and some more FCs
Dark Souls - 1000
Alpha Protocol - All of the different routes
Nier - Finish third and complete fourth playthroughs
Star Ocean TLH - Battle trophies, endings, chaos playthough, finish up IC
Star Ocean TtEoT - All postgame content, 50% battle trophies at least, try out other characters
Star Ocean 2 - Rena playthrough
Tales of Vesperia - 1000
Mushi Futari - more consistency
Deathsmiles - 1cc
Morrowind - always more Morrowind
Fallout New Vegas - finish up all of the faction endings, new playthorough for each with no scabby reloading
Infinite Undiscovery - 1000
Blastworks - play the piece of shit so that I can unlock the reason I purchased the game...
EDF games - all guns, all difficulties
Viewtiful Joe - Finish hard
killer7 - killer 8 mode
Mirror's Edge - time trials on each course
Bayonetta - platinum every level to unlock Jeanne
DMC 4 - finish hard difficulties

How many years do you think that will take?

Anyone have any 2012 backlog schemes?

I don't have a backlog because I own a PS3.

Definitely do these. At very least, Nier. The game isn't fully told until you've obtained ending D and read Grimoire Noir. I actually want to play the JP PS3 version since the version I played, Gestalt, doesn't have the protagonist's character progression as detailed as brother Nier's (they basically slap a sling around his arm and advance the plot by a few years). Dark Souls isn't really necessary though, there's nothing to gain from maxing some garbage weapon for an achievement. Pretty much just visit every area and don't forget about the Painted World like I did.

I have pretty much half-assed everything I've bought this year. I find trophies completely and utterly redundant in comparison to achievements, which trophies are a blatant rip-off of, and achievements had completely fucked my gaming perspective for awhile there. I've been buying more PS3 games in recent times (Xillia, Dark Souls, Totori, MGS HD) and just basically play at my own pace. I like it this way, it makes me realize what I like and keep coming back to, rather than keep coming back to by obligation. At this point I'm growing tired of this and want to play shmups.

I don't keep a backlog because beating games is stupid. If there's an "end" to a game, it's not a game, it's a movie. I'll just forget the RPG's story in a year. I go into every game thinking I'll be playing it more than once. A lot of people put games down once they've beaten them, or obtained all achievements, told that they've finished the game and there's absolutely no reason to play through or bother with the game again. I did this with Resonance of Fate, which I didn't max all weapons on, but obtained 1000/1000. Great game though, totally worth it except for beating all arenas, which was just tedious. Best battle system I've seen in years.

But yeah, pretty much all games this year. I did 1000/1000 Steins;Gate and I guess there's truly nothing else to be done there, I did beat the hell out of Nier but I guess I'm not done with it because it's telling me I don't have all achievements. On the other hand, I did 1000/1000 MMP/PS and still go back to PS because it's great.

In the time it takes someone to create a backlog in text form they could have made progress or maybe even beaten a game or two.

I use the backloggery site to keep track of my collection, progress in games and high scores. Writing down how many you think you've "beaten" isn't the only use obviously. But it's a personal tool you can use however you want, so doesn't really matter if people do just that.

I honestly couldn't give a toss about achievements in 90% of the games that I play. I do, however, like to max the gamerscore out on games that I really really like. I am sure that the last few weapons to max in Dark Souls will be a pain but I plan on running through that game many times and I think that the achievements will inevitably come as I experiment with builds. There are a lot of things that I want to try out post patch too.

As for the replaying sentiment and achievement focus taking away enjoyment, I totally agree with you. I have played Vesperia through twice and I am now having an absolute ball in the end game playing co-op with my wife. It will probably take me another 4 or 5 playthroughs to get close to getting 1000 gs on this one because of the many obscure requirements for certain quests. I have no intention of using guides to track each small detail. If I miss something I will just try and find it next time through.

All these dirt cheap indie bundles are blowing up my backlog exponentially. I have like 40 steam games now, up from maybe 4 before the bundle madness began.

My backlog is tiny in comparision to some of yours [what the hell, BulletMagnet].
* Pokemon Black [DS]. Haven't felt like playing it very much, so it just sits idly in my DS while I play PS1 games on my netbook.
* Pokemon Leaf Green [GBA]. Same thing with Black, just sitting there in my DS. It's actually worse, because if I do pick up a Pokemon game, I'm almost certainly going to go play the one in the top slot [yay fat DS].
* Tales of Symphonia [GC]. Stupid me decided to start playing Tales of Destiny right after getting this and have sunken all the time I'd have placed for Symphonia into Destiny. It doesn't help that I like Stahn better than the ToS's main character, too.
* Assassins Creed: Brotherhood [PC]. I keep forgetting that I even got it, what with me having gotten it through OnLive for a dollar. Really damn good, and I should probably go play it now, but it's 11 at night while I'm typing this, and I'm tired.

There's probably tons of stuff that I haven't played much of that other people would put on their backlog lists, but this is only games that I really feel like I haven't been playing enough of, but haven't felt like actually playing them over something else.

EDIT

fuck fuck fuck, forgot some things:
* Super Mario Galaxy 2 [Wii]. I haven't turned on my damn Wii in forever.
* New Super Mario Bros. [Wii]. See above.
* Virtua Quest [GC]. Also see above, but it's also a liiiiiitle tedious, but 3D beat-em-ups tend to be that way. Still better than Sonic Unleashed's werehog levels.

It's been a year since I made this thread. How is my backlog doing?

Borderlands - Got to lv 24 as Siren, started over as Soldier. Still lv 10
Valkyria Chronicles - Still untouched
Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection - Almost done, 4 more Wizard Goals to finish
Lost Planet 2 - Gave up on beating hardest difficulty, sold
God of War 3 - Still untouched
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2- Still untouched
3D Dot Game Heroes - Beaten normal difficulty, still need to beat Hard and Spelunker modes
Gran Turismo 5 - Working on it right now, almost done
F1 2010 - Played for a while, still want to beat career mode with my wheel
Dirt 2 - Still untouched
GRID - Still untouched
F1 Championship Edition - Gave up on it, sold it sealed
WRC - FIA World Rally Championship - Still untouched

And these were added to the list:
God of War Collection
MotoGP 10/11
Dark Souls
Skyrim <-- Lord knows how much time this one will take to complete

I was planning to get Doom BFG Edition and XCOM...not anymore. Won't be able to play them anyway, will get them later for cheap.

So much stuff to play, so little time. Looks like I'll have to sell most of them.

I just bought about 40-50 games over the last 2-3 months. For nearly 2/3 the price of a Wii-U.

I somehow doubt that a Wii-U (along with a first party Nintendo title) is going to offer me as much value as some of the bargains I have picked up over the last few weeks.

Le'see....

-Thunder Force V
-Sonic Wings Special
-Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean
-Dragon Force
-Shining Wisdom
-Shining the Holy Ark
-Astal
-Gradius III & IV (L O L)
-God Hand
-Final Fantasy IX, X

The biggest tragedy of this list are all the beautiful Working Designs RPGs I have that I haven't beaten yet. E.G., Dragon Force, that game is amazing. Why haven't I gotten through it yet?!

Shining Wisdom, eh, not so much. I want to beat it just to say I have beaten it (and I spent $50 on it), but once that's over I'll probably sell it. Nice game, just not the best.

It's big enough that this happened: The other day, I was reminded of Prince of Persia during a conversation. I thought, "Oh yeah, I kept meaning to try out that Sands of Time game everyone said was really good. I should get that soon!". And then I realized it was almost a decade old :|

The problem though isn't the backlog, it's the fact that I keep discovering oldschool (olderschool?) games that I want to play, and those usually end up taking precedence.

I tried that one twice - kept crashing past a certain save. There's been an absolutely huge number of games in that series since, and many of them get good reviews too.

I'm in the same spot with my Woo / Japanese (mainly Kurosawa) films. Gotta get some more of them watched!
