Do people not know that appreciate means to grasp/understand? Even in the context of receiving a favor or gift it means that you fully comprehend the import of said gift - ie what it says about the giver's feelings towards you.

...maybe it's used differently outside the US?

Based on my experience, it's not usually used like that inside the US. Instead the sentence would be written with, "We understand that this can be an inconvenience".

I'm 28, and I don't even need any fingers to count how many times I've read or heard someone use the word "appreciate" as a synonym for grasp/understand IRL because the number is a big fat zero. It is always used to express gratitude. Always. That doesn't mean that it can't have any other meaning, but in practice the people I've met don't use it that way.

Literature is a different story, which is how I'm familiar with the alternative usage.

Bumping old thread because Regretsy has more PayPal fuckery. A violin was sold on eBay, and the buyer disputed the violin's authenticity. PayPal immediately declares the violin a counterfeit, without verification, and orders the violin destroyed and proof of the destruction made. Violin destroyed, buyer got all his money back, seller is out $2500 AND the violin.

Googling around, this is looking like a pretty easy way to scam people - it's possible that the violin pictured is not the violin sold, but a cheap violin the buyer could have purchased and then destroyed to "prove" the actual purchased violin was counterfeit, therefore winning a free violin for the cost of destroying an inferior one. Completely sanctioned by PayPal's terms of service. Disgusting.

So I guess PayPal's idea is that it's better to force their customers to act as vigilantes than just have them return counterfeit items to the seller? IANAL, but that can't possibly be the best course of action. It's really bad in this case... a "fake" violin still has value, unlike fake baseball cards or stuff like that.

Gahh! You people need to stop flaunting your ignorance of the English language around in an effort to ridicule someone using it correctly. Gahh! You drove me to this pedantry!

My interpretation: appreciate = gratitude

I appreciate that your kitten was mauled by a dog.
That doesn't sound right, does it?

Yes, actually.

I appreciate that your kitten was mauled by a dog, but unfortunately, we can't press charges.

Paypal seller protection doesn't exist - you just chargeback them - bam. Instant lose for the seller. The dirty part for me is the way ebay are a monopoly, and then use that to try to force people into using their pet purchased payment provider.

Also re: population vs cats.

Yes. It's ok though, we as a species will most assuredly destroy the planet through breeding. Cats from OUTER SPACE will then arrive and live in harmony with cockroaches (who are immortal), as nature slowly reclaims our decaying shrines to procreation. I actually do donate to a biodiversity charity, one that isn't scared to talk about population.

I'm in the middle of a charge-back situation right now. Intl. buyer hasn't gotten their game yet. Rather than asking me about it, they open a claim. I submitted USPS shipping info to PayPal, but that's all I can do. Preparing for them to side with buyer even though I'm the one with hard evidence (confirmation via USPS that the item actually shipped) and the buyer gets the freedom to lie about it not being received. Free stuff over the internet, WOOO!!1 Prepared for disappointment...

It wasn't :( AFAIR, it cost approximiately $8 zillion to ship intl. insured w/ delivery confirmation. I was trying to be nice and save the buyer paying half the cost of their item on shipping alone. I'm pretty sure the days of niceness are over. Thanks for ruining it for everyone else, anonymous internet dweller.

Can't afford to be nice anymore. Gotta cover your ass. Anything I ship over $50 automatically gets insurance and delivery confirmation at the buyer's expense.
