I don't normally post on here but this has just got me so peeved I have to share. Apparently its ok to raise money for sick cats but not for children and families in need.

I don't know anything about regretsy, but something seems fishy about the proceedings. From what I read the reason they got shut down was that it wasn't a non-profit org receiving the donations. He seemed to say that he was using the same account to receive income from his book and other merchandise on the site. In which case, it doesn't surprise me in the least that they locked it. The whole cat vs kids thing was pretty murky too. Methinks it was a poor representation of the actual conversation, so that he could have a catchy headline.

That's why monopolies suck. Paypal can do whatever they want and you are completely at their mercy. Paypal pretends to be a bank but doesn't act like one, which should have ramifications.
Paypal is in serious need of some government oversight (and I'm saying this as someone who dislikes government involvement as much as the next man, given how inept governments tend to be).

There is a discussion about this over at Hacker News (specifically, this post is pretty interesting). I didn't read all of the comments, but the general vibe I got is:
- What regrestsy was doing might have been in a grey area, since there are a lot of regulations regarding donations and non-profits
- PayPal is overzealous when it comes to fraud protection
- PayPal's TOS isn't very clear in this situation
- PayPal's customer service sucks more often than not, although as one guy put it, "When you want to let everyone with a hotmail account and a prepaid debit card become a "merchant", it's inevitable that there are going to be _lots_ of edge cases, and not nearly enough skilled customer service people."

Sadly, this doesn't change the fact there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people in the same customer service hell and don't have the benefit of the Internet creating enough publicity for someone that matters to push the magic button to fix things.

My personal PayPal story, for those that haven't heard it: someone had managed to temporarily gain access to my account and attempted to withdraw funds in two transactions totalling $1100 from my bank account... which had about $50 in it at the time. An automated process flagged the transactions and locked my account, but didn't even attempt to stop the bank transfer from proceeding. Customer service was also completely unwilling to help, and in the end I was forced to close my bank account to stop PayPal from taking money I didn't have from it. I haven't had a bank account linked to my PayPal account since.
