Well you'd better get ready for the second boss then, he's the toughest one in the game.

Besides the annoyance of the game diluting its best bits, instead of obliterating my mind with concentrated awesome, Hard Corps is becoming one of my favourites in the series along with Super Contra (AC). Oh Nakazato-san. I shouldn't have to choose between the rivetingly rambunctious randomness of Professor Crab and the punishingly pixel-precise patterns of the Great Takedda Robot. Especially after sitting through that fucking shitty jungle twice in thirty minutes. It's enough to make me take a crash course in ROM hacking. I'd kill off all the talky bits too. And lower the extend frequency so that it was less possible to coast through the later stuff on the back of extends from the earlier stages.

edit: but holy fuck, just finished a run of Bloodlines (US - accept no other regions) on expert. Now this was 16-bit Konami at their finest. Thank god this one wasn't dragged down by fluff as well. Nothing but masterfully refined methodical action-platforming here.

Just bought Guilty Gear Isuka [was only $6].

Jeez, it is a mess. It's like a slightly gimped version of XX if playing with 2 players [solely because of the turn thing], and a crazy piece of junk with any more [turn thing, hard to see where you are, limited room, easy to just get someone stuck in a multi-person combo/get yourself stuck in a combo]. I probably could get used to the system enough to see how I can manage, but the question is: do I want to?

Interestingly enough, the beat-em-up section is rather good [well, there is still the turn thing, and jump is no longer the up button, but the free roaming motion helps loads, and it seems loads more fair than Arcade mode towards the player. Also, I probably shouldn't say "good". It's fun, but still a mess.], and if the main game had free-roaming fights like that instead of being only dual-layered, it'd probably be a bit better. In fact, this is why I'm not regretting my purchase.

Also, not nice to play on a keyboard. I can't wait until I get my joypads in the mail.

Beat Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. Was a lot easier than I remember it from way back when I played the original. Once you get Mustadio, the game's pretty much a cakewalk. I didn't even use the magic branch of jobs, apart from a white mage early on. Mustadio/Balthier as a chemist was plenty. Might have to replay it again sometime using only generic characters.

Right now I'm raging against the Sigma battle in MMX3. First time playing it all the way through. X3 may be my new favorite in the X series. All the mechanics are really well-implemented and free from the gimmickry that occasionally plagued the first 2. And soon to controversial PSX games...

Mega Man X6 is the best in the series next to the original. Really wish people would just accept it already instead of pretending it doesn't exist because of Inafune's lack of involvement.

Mega Man X6 is a decent game at heart but is ruined by absolutely horrid stage design. Mega Man X5 is a decent game that is utterly ruined by Alia forcibly interrupting the action every five seconds. Mega Man X4 is the best X game together with X8.

Myself, I'm currently playing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for Wii. It's a pretty great game, the swordfighting controls are most excellent. The companion in the game, though, embodies some of the worst of both Navi and aforementioned Alia. Guh.

Also, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World for Xbox 360. Bought it when it was on sale a few weeks ago, had fallen in love with the presentation of it when I first played the trial. Also quite a great game. Playing it with the arcade stick because it just feels right.

Picked up Wario Ware Do It Yourself for DS the other day. Not sure why I haven't done so before, as I'm a major Wario Ware addict. The fact that I've had this Wii for a year and still don't own Smooth Moves is unbelievable. Only just started on DIY, about to learn how to make microgames! Oh my!

Funny, I thought X4 was rather barebones and X5 was a big improvement over it. Never got to play X6, but I was told it sucks.

Atelier Totori and Tales of Xillia. Xillia is probably my RPG of the year, easily. Totori is a massive step above Rorona and has way better pacing.

Blaze Heatnix, Ground Scaravich and Gate's lab 1 are the only bad parts of the game. If you have any problems with the rest of the stage design, it's not the game's fault as it is hard but totally reasonable. X5's stage design was still way worse anyway. Duff McWhalen stage anyone? that one goes on forever and is totally uneventful. Same goes to Izzy Glow, Grizzly Slash and The Skiver.

Virtua Fighter 2... but the Model 2 version [jeez, is it pretty compared to the PC port]. I'm amazed this netbook doesn't choke on it. Actually, the only Model 2 game I've tried that it does choke on is Sonic The Fighters. What is so different about it compared to all the other Model 2 games? Does it run on a more powerful version of the board?

But yeah, VF2 in ElSemi's Model 2 emulator is more responsive than the PC version too, but a little more taxing on my battery life.

Also, been playing the tiniest bit of Dead or Alive and Fighting Vipers.

I wanted to play VF3, but Supermodel on a netbook is probably not the best idea. Hell, even my main machine [an assy $400 Dell laptop with Intel video and a 2.1GHz dual core Pentium] can't handle it. Also, visually glitchy as hell [but "playable", ignoring the sub 40% speed].

Anyone here ever played "The Immortal"?

I was finally able to beat this beast today. I love the oldschool feel of this game. Scary, gory, and lots of puzzles that will leave you scratching your head wondering how to solve them. I had to look up on youtube to solve one puzzle I've been stuck for years, but after that it was smooth sailing to the end. The plot is great too.

played this on my atari st when it came out and I didn't understand a thing of it(obv hacked and no speaking english).
it had a great atmosphear and I was sad to be that bad at it.
Have u played cadaver?
same iso view with lot of puzzles;I was trash at it too.
Actually back in the days I almost always hacked games and no internet meant no easy help and manuals :)
I learnt english super late and I could only play action games or dungeon master like's games that didnt require too much read.
Very frustrating when I think about it now.
Especially remembering trying to play "the pawn" on atari and just being disappointed about the walls of text.

With emulators I revisited some of them but 20 years later they can be rough to get in

I'm not too much into jrpgs but it's easily there with SMG2 and S&P2 as one of the best experiences I've had on Wii - probably my GOTY. There are some minor gripes but all nitpicking is easily forgotten when compared to things Xenoblade does just right.

Moar gushing.

So yeah you should really get it.

I played through the Genesis version several years ago, great game. Adding to what you wrote, I think the spider level in particular is very memorable and wonderfully tense. I can't recall another game that made me feel the way I did when I bumbled into an egg sac in that long tunnel.

It's fucking fantastic. I can't believe they managed to do this on the Wii, it really is a technical marvel. The poly-count / detail is a little on the low side comparatively speaking, but huge seamless maps and everything is so fluid.

It's a must-have, no doubt about it.

Actually fired up good old Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast. Anyone who really likes the Dreamcast should band together with me on SCTHACK. Yes, I know Blue Burst has more content, but original Dreamcast hardware? Hell yeah. You can connect using dial-up or a broadband adapter regardless, so go nuts. Was thinking about making a thread about it, but I'll probably let it slide since the interest would probably be pretty low. Still, it's pretty fun running around the forest at level 3 and actually being concerned that any enemy could drop me if I run into them like a dumbass.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

Been playing Tales of Destiny. 7 hours in, I'm currently in the country of Aquaveil.

I'm really enjoying this game. The great pixel art, the decent-to-awesome music, and most of all, the battle system, which is essentially a beat-em-up.
Also, the main character is just some dude who wants some adventure in his life instead of being some emo bastard. Awesome!

On a Castlevania kick again, playing what I consider to be the second era of CV. In order of greatness -

3. Castlevania Bloodlines (Gen)
2. Dracula X (Turbo Duo)
1. Super Castlevania IV (SNES)

With special focus on Super Castlevania IV this time. The game is nearly perfection.

EDIT - I do count the x68000 game in the 2nd era, but like most I didn't get to play it until well after SotN when it was released in the states.

Figures my first ever no-miss of Metal Slug 3's brilliantly, excruciatingly epic final mission didn't occur in a run where I bothered to not die in the easy-peasy missions 1-4. :[ I'll get that 1LC someday.

Off of my PS1 kick, on to my Genesis one!

Today I've been playing...
Ranger X [gotta get used to the control, but it looks really sexy for Genesis hardware and is rather fun, also I suck]
Castlevania Bloodlines [holy fuck this is good, I never really enjoyed Castlevania games, but I'm loving this]
Ristar [fuck the lava level, I'm tempted to just level select past it, it is full of bullshit]
Dynamite Headdy [it looks pretty, but I don't like it very much]
Gauntlet IV [read: the Genesis port of Gauntlet. I can't wait until I can grab my friends so we can go 3 player on this [I only have 3 controllers, even though I have more friends]].
Streets of Rage 3 [I like how the worst song in the game is played in the club [which is coincidentally where I got a game over], even though the game has much more clubby music]

Just finished Zelda: SS. Very good game, but way too hand-holdy. To be fair it's more difficult than WW or TP, but that's not saying much. It means I died twice instead of zero times.

Zone of the Enders and loving it, even though combat can get tedious.

Grasshopper Manufacture's "Flower, Sun, and Rain" for PS2. This has to be the most dumbed down adventure game ever made. All the puzzles consist of typing digits into your electronic briefcase machine thingy, and the right numbers for each puzzle are to be found in the hotel guide book when you press start. And the backtracking and endless dialogue is enough to make a healthy human being vomit. Though I don't understand much of it, because I don't speak Japanese very well at all.

When I get around to it, I will try out Blood+ One Night Kiss. Hopefully the combat isn't as bland as I remember it to be...

And I'm also playing Bokura no Kazoku - My Family Growing up in the 21st Century.
