Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Yeah, Gunbuster is absolutely perfect, as is Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise. I wish that damn Blu-Ray wasn't so damned expensive...Also, since we were talking about Urusei Yatsura the other day...it looks like those DVDs have now gone OOP because they lost the rights

I'm surprised they released the complete series or that AnimEigo is still printing titles at all, esp. with their fan-oriented business model. They'd be the equivalent of a game company who only releases shoot-'em-ups and visual novels. Sadly, in this tough market of cheep mediocre animu, they shoulda folded long ago. Nonetheless, if you love anime your way, then AnimEigo has put out the best releases of the medium, bar none

Watched Paprika the other day. Haven't felt this miserable watching a movie in a long time.
Everything about it struck a bad chord with me. From the art style, to the predictable dream plot... Urgh. Was considering watching Paranoia Agent too.

Yeah I know, it'll only be a matter of time until they do
. I'm glad to see that at least some good stuff has been getting released/re-released from other companies, though. It's nice seeing Dirty Pair finally get a U.S. release, as well as the re-release of the OVA stuff. Also nice to see Fist of the North Star, Ghost Sweeper Mikami, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and a handful of other older titles get a release/re-release. Still so much stuff that is OOP or that hasn't come overseas, though...

yeh ok I was being lazy - I shall watch the Gunbuster OAVs deffo - yeh Royal Space Force was great and esp. the ending.xbl0x180 wrote:I pretty much stopped at the Gundam F-91 movie, so no V, G, W, and any other Gundam after that. I think 08 MS Team maaaay be okay, but I do not like the character designs for that one.
GunBuster should be seen in its OAV glory, not in an edited "movie" version. I agree, too, that it was really sad at the end. The other "ending overseeing Earth" that I liked was from Honneamise. Only Tarkovsky's Solaris has made me feel sad on that level. If I was an actor and had to think of a "sad moment" to psych myself, it would be those movies
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
finished Ideon last night, yep the ending (in particular the last 5 minutes) did seem extremeley rushed, but it was cancelled so its understandable. I thought Piper Lou flying around with cosmic trails behind him was pretty cool (though I suppose what was actually happening was pretty depressing :/ ).
You can see a fair bit of influence on Evangelion in it, though not as much as I thought - the most direct thing I could think of was how when Ideon seems to be in a desperate situation he has a rage/berserk, similarly to Unit 1.
I shall watch A Contact and Be Invoked over next few days.

The Berserk anime ending is so stupid. Literally just cuts off as Guts is about to fight someone.
However, the bloopers are something to behold.

finished all Ideon
Be Invoked was amazing, I didn't think A Contact was as good though, loads of bits wouldn't have made any sense at all if you hadn't seen the series...

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I'm not big on hentai, but has anyone seen the short Evangelion pr0n which seems like it was animated by Gainax? It's about the "Human Instrumentality Project", which means everyone at Nerv HQ is getting creampies with Gendo perversely grinning in his little ivory tower as a crescendo of orgasms echo through the building. Good stuff.
Watching FLCL right now. I really need to see a Miyazaki movie for once in my life.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
That's an infamous doujin anime--Gainax had nothing to do with it, even though there are officially licensed figures of Rei and Asuka with tits under removable clothes.
With Gainax having gotten their start doing doujin anime (DAICON IV), I'm sure they were okay with the project, at least.

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Wasn't it Daicon III?

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
You are correct that Gainax technically got their start with the DAICON III animation, but IV is the one that really catapulted them to success.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Haha yeah, I was just being a snot. I think a lot about how much I miss old Gainax...like, to an unhealthy degree, really. You would think that a group of fans that got their start with fantastic art and clever references would stay true to their roots...

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
To put it simply, Eva was too successful, and Gainax could no longer be those guys who made a silly parody video for a con with the best animation ever.
Gurren Lagann was clearly an attempt at recapturing the pre-Eva spirit, but it was far too heavy-handed (Nadia managed to be feel-good without being so relentlessly optimistic) and nothing about it was particularly memorable. I'm sure it would have turned out better if Anno hadn't left to milk the Eva cash cow some more. Speaking of which, when's Rebuild 3 supposed to come out?

Wikipedia lists Fall 2012, which means Spring 2013 is when we're going to get a BD/DVD release, not earlier. :\Estebang wrote:Speaking of which, when's Rebuild 3 supposed to come out?

Another blind buy yesterday.

I'm guessing it's another animu about "little girls doing cute things," but it was 8 bucks total (including 2-day shipping), so I can throw one more into the pile. I also bought both sets of Full Metal Alchemist for a gift

That'll be something to look forward to just to see how the End of Evangelion unfolds in grand "Rebuild" style/presentation. Originally, it was supposed to be a four-part Rebuild series.moozooh wrote:Wikipedia lists Fall 2012, which means Spring 2013 is when we're going to get a BD/DVD release, not earlier. :\Estebang wrote:Speaking of which, when's Rebuild 3 supposed to come out?

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
It wasn't that bad. I thought the last 2 episodes were very unique and well executed.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
I've pretty much come to the realisation that there won't ever be another Kimagure Orange Road, Marmalade Boy, and Maison Ikkoku. I'm not expecting anything outta Air or... maybe I'm expecting it to be terrible. It was $8, though

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Saw End of Evangelion again, this time with my friend's cute younger sister who had seen the series, but not the movie.
Her reaction to what happened to Asuka was priceless. That movie never gets old, I swear to god. I'm going to be watching it when I'm 80, I'm certain.
Will pop my Nausicaa cherry hopefully tomorrow, but studying for finals might change that.

I'm at episode 25 of Zeta Gundam atm and I'm loving it, though it is problematic that I don't really like the design of Zeta Gundam itself

I'm intending to watch either the proper Gunbuster series or Space Battleship Yamato after that

Definitely go with Gunbuster!

Yeah, I recommend Space Battleship Yamato as well. I'm 2/3 of the way into and loving every second. I really with they would give U.S. releases of his stuff...

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Actually, it's more like The Brady Bunch, but with only Marcia and Greg. Now, add in some high school dramedy a la My So-Called Life and you gots a composite of Marmalade Boy. It's unashamedly frilly and girly to the point that I wouldn't admit in public to watching it. However, it's well done, whether it's the designs, the animation quality, the voice acting and on to the background music and theme songs. Notice how most people who see it become hooked and very few dislike it (and even then the criticism is mostly towards the latter third of the show). Compared by today's standards, the series is quite long and drawn out at more than 70 episodesRaytrace wrote:I'm intrigued by this Marmalade Boy - what is it like? The episodes for Marmalade Boy should be way more accessible to see or cheaper to buy than Maison Ikkoku (90 episodes) and Kimagure Orange Road (1 pilot episode, 50 episodes, 8 OAVs, 1 movie, and 1 special). All three series are outta print, but the latter two have sets or discs that you can't find anywhere.
Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Are you sure? I thought Marmalade Boy was still in print? At least it's still cheap for new DVDs on Amazon.
