PCE CD emulation

Post by Moniker »

If this doesn't pass forum legality standards, go ahead and lock.

Is there any way to emulate PCE CD games that doesn't involve making complex cfg files with track names/lengths/whatever else? It seems odd that other CD-based emulation doesn't require this BS and can be played from a single unextracted iso.

I wanna play Sapphire & Nexczyr (sp?) on my psp, dammit!

You can actually play Sapphire legally on the PSP. It's part of the Ginga Ojousama Densetsu Collection.

That's true! No such luck with Nexzr, however. I own a legit copy, but in recent years, the price has been unreasonably inflated so I understand why someone might turn to the dark side on this one :)

Could I recommend mednafen? You'll need a BIOS image and some very mild configging (you need to point the program to the BIOS). The emulator, in general, runs very well. Though, I don't know what the status is on PSP- I just use it on my Mac.

Magic Engine plus Daemon tools and an ISO should help. Though ME is not free.

I've always had problems emulating Sapphire...But yeah, Magic Engine and something like Daemon tools is what I've always used.

IIRC, the reason that it differs from other CD-based systems is that at least some PCE-CD games (I think this is limited to System Card 3 games, but I'm not sure) use a trick to reduce average seek time: they duplicate the data track as both the first and last track of the disc, so you get a layout like:

<data track copy 1> <a bunch of CDDA tracks> <data track copy 2>

One problem with this is that pretty much every other mixed-mode standard or pseudo-standard (some of which are enforced in burner firmware) somehow encodes the assumption that there is a "data region" and a "CDDA region" with exactly one transition between the two. A secondary problem with this is that an accurate BIN/CUE image contains a redundant copy of the data track, which some people tried to remedy by only including a single copy of the data track in distributed rips. In principle, there should be no problem with this in BIN/CUE format (or similar formats like BIN/TOC), but it seems to have caused problems in practice.

Not unreasonably, it's aces!

Still in the cheaper end of the spectrum for high end PCE shmups too.
