I have an old 27" Magnavox. It works well but was made in the early-mid 90s, so I don't trust it not to catch fire if I rotate it. I play games in fullscreen mode when I can, but the TV stays in a horizontal position... which means that I play Ikaruga and Shikigami II as if they were horizontal shooters (I have to rotate the control pad to play Shiki II; I got used to it pretty fast).
I desperately wish I could do the same thing with Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable Night.

Aside from the fact that the picture has to be routed through a RF-modulator, I have no complaints about my TATE TV. Bought a 27" RCA set before I moved, now the 25" White Westinghouse piece-o-crap set is dedicated TATE It makes a WORLD of difference...just out of laziness I fired up Espgaluda on the YOKO setup and got fucking CREAMED. This probably wouldn't have happened if I had never tried flipping TVs in the first place, but meh. :/
I will say this though, being able to transition between monitors on the fly is badass enough..being able to shmup on the DC while someone else is using the PS2 in the same room is even better. While my roomate is playing IIDX I can be like "TRIZEAL, BITCHES!! ^________^"
I also tried setting my PC's video card to secondary monitors, so I could use the TATE monitor for MAME. That didn't turn out so hot...the RCA TV works fine by using the S-Video output, but when it's routed through the RF to the TATE monitor, it's a bit too blurry. :/

One thing many people seems to think is that the larger monitor you decide to Tate - the better. This is, according to my experiences, not always true.
I have tated sizes 14", 17", 21" and 28" and out of these 14 and 17 is the best I think - 28 was just waaay to big, remember I played Ikaruga on it and my ship was like the size of my closed fist, too big! 21" is okey - it's the around the size of a normal Egret3-cab so If you're used to that I guess it's okey...
If Tate-ing a 14" you get around the same size of picture (I know it's not completly comparable or true) of a yoko-28" - so a tated 28" would end up beeing a 52" yoko or something, and that's big!
I'd say a tated 17-21" monitor is the best option, VGA or RGB is only a matter of wich console you're playing...

well, not to be a weasel, bro, but it can be. i tate my tv all the time (and don't platy verts without it, generally).Nate wrote:TWITCH:Not to be a weasel, bro. But, you make TATE sound risky. No no no...thats not the right way to do it.
TATE the TV, then wait. If the TV doesn't automatically deguase itself, then forget about it.
Some TV's just don't like sitting vertical no matter what. As long as you use a newer TV you shouln't have any problems.
My 27" JVC works fine, and it was purchased in the late 90's.
see here: link
note: the problem mentioned in the thread above has gotten worse. it seems to only appear when my tv is set to default. tate is much less noticable, but i still get ghosting at the problem area.

tate is great, and improves the experience on a lot of games, but no one should pretend there isn't some amount of risk involved.
on that note however, i will not stop rotating my tv, as i can't imagine relying on yoko for verts. **leaves a bad taste in my mouth thinking about it**
I have no sig whatsoever.

TATE'ing has helped me IMMENSELY on:
CAVE in general
Trizeal (the scoring items don't look like bullets in their early forms now! yay!)
Psyvariar 1 & 2 (especially with hit areas turned on, in Psyvariar 1... hard to tell what the fuck is going on when every hit box on the screen is squished :/ )
Shiki 2 (so many goddamned bullets...)
depends on the game, if you ask me. i have no trouble in games like Ikaruga or Shienryu when playing on Yoko, but when it comes to insane ammounts of bullet-hell... thank god for TATE.

Some TV's there "could" be a risk...that is if they totally suck as TV's go.
Most newer TV's can handle Tate though.
Think of it this way...
You drive your car every day. You use your brakes and tires more than anything. These need to be replaced from time to time, you're not going to stop driving your car are you?
Of all the people who TATE and have no problems whatsoever, it sure outweighs the people who do! Think about that for a moment!!
"Tate is still safer then "safe sex".
The Commodore 1071 which I'm borrowing (no RGB - only composite & S-video) is sweet! Everyone who sees it is surprised at how crisp the picture is for such an old TV.
I'd be playing shooters in tate on it, then some coworkers come along itching for some 3rd Strike, and I just turn it off, rub my hand on it to get rid of some of the static, flip it back over, and away we go! No distortion or colour problems at all!
I swear I will buy one for myself one of these days!

Welcome aboard the TATE express, jp.
I'll never forget when I TATE'ed the first time way back in October 2001. I gave Battle Garegga and Strikers 2 a spin in TATE and I had pretty much the same overall reaction as you. Not only did it look much nicer, but the increased view on the screen and overall enjoyment helped my scores improve too.

Anyone have experience or even heard if Sony Wega TVs are safe to Tate? I have tried mine which seemed okay, but I got paranoid and flipped it back to regular. I have heard that even if it seems safe, you may be causing harm internally. Well, I guess life is full of risks, there is only one sure way to find out.
I'm becoming more and more interested in the LCD displays that Dell has, the Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW 20". Maybe you guys are aware, but this model rotates right on the stand and has many options for inputs. Goes for around $500 if you were wondering.

^ i have a 20" trinitron tv and tated it for almost two years with no problems. now however i get a little band of "ghosting" on the left side. doesn't interfere with gameplay, but its irritating as hell during a movie.

I have a 17" Philips Magnavox CRT TV that's about five years old, and I've tried TATEing it twice now for SnS2. Both times the colors have gotten distorted and I got too scared to play further after about ten minutes. Both times I TATEd it exactly according to those instructions at the Turn To Vertical site. My TV is fairly new, and P.M. is a very decent brand. I guess I'm out of luck until I get my new TV.

I had my first TATE experience this last week (using a Dell projector, no less!), and I can't believe how much of a difference it makes. I played DonPachi and Galactick Attack on my Saturn and was blown away by how much cleaner the graphics were (much easier to see everything), not to mention the size of everything (though that had more to do w/ the projector).jp wrote:Today was my first experience with TATE.Though definitely not my last.

Are there any cheap old monitors you can buy that support RGB?Rob will hate me for this, but RGB is worth all the expense and hassle. You see a lot more details you never could before.
If you think it's impressive...wait to try it in RGB
I'm fine using my newish 14" portable for now, but it'd be nice to have a cheap ol' monitor to use instead.

If your portable telly is fairly new there's a pretty good chance that it is already RGB capable. Most Tellys made in the past 5 or so years are capable of RGB. Hopefully all you need is a RGB cable.Bal-Sagoth wrote: Are there any cheap old monitors you can buy that support RGB?

It's a hardware thread right now, but I just bought a perma tate to avoid the hassle/catastrophe that is flipping TV's constantly - which happens regularly when you share a TV with 2 people that don't like shootersPedro Lambrini wrote:If your portable telly is fairly new there's a pretty good chance that it is already RGB capable. Anyway, here's the link;

It's held up so far and I can't complain about the sound + picture quality, and very reasonable at the price.
Not had it long term though, so don't blame me it it goes tits up after a month
