New G.rev shmup for 3DS
New G.rev shmup for 3DS
So apparently G.rev has revealed in the latest Famitsu that they're working on an original shooter for 3DS. The title is either "Kouga" or "Kokuga". No more details available yet.
Edit :
Title is in fact "Kokuga"
Spring 2012 release
Supports up to 4 players at once
Supports 4 player download play with 1 cart
Seems to have Under Defeat-ish visual themes (tanks, jets, etc.)
Each stage has a name from letters "A" through "L"
Each stage you complete unlocks other stages in a Darius-ish manner
You play through 3 stages and then get the final stage
Currently 40% complete

Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
The 3DS is universally region locked, so the West is already screwed. Ah well, it's a shit platform anyway.
Vita
I really think we'll witness in the next five years a massive migration of the Japanese game industry to handhelds, obviously bringing shmups with them. Projects like this and Cave's Vita shooter are just the start. Only the industry pillars like Sega/Bamco/Square-Enix will be able to stick around on consoles (AKA Calladooty machines).

Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
I'm expecting this too. With the costs of console development going up, and Japanese consumers becoming increasingly handheld-centric, more and more Japanese developers are going to shift their focus to handhelds (especially the smaller devs). I also predict that the next generation of consoles will be the last; next-next gen will be nothing but powerful handhelds with TV-out and maybe ports for external controllers.Estebang wrote:I really think we'll witness in the next five years a massive migration of the Japanese game industry to handhelds, obviously bringing shmups with them. Shame about the region locking though.
Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
Since G.Rev released Strania in the West I'm hopeful that this will see a US release here. XSEED? Aksys? Anyone?

Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
Not likely. Releasing anything for the 3DS (an unproven platform surrounded by negativity) is a risky venture, and the only retail release of a G.Rev game here (Senko Rev. X) was a total commercial failure.Zeether wrote:Since G.Rev released Strania in the West I'm hopeful that this will see a US release here. XSEED? Aksys? Anyone?
If Under Defeat HD somehow gets brought over, then maaaaybe.
I predict that the next-next generation of consoles will be marketed primarily as streaming media boxes like the Apple TV and Roku (which already play Angry Birds), with games as a secondary function. There will also be a lot more crossover with stuff on smartphones, which will have finally ended dedicated gaming handhelds.

Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
Strania was much easier for them to release, as it was initially an XBLA game.
Under Defeat and this new 3DS shmup would actually require localization, and I'm sure Aksys would want nothing to do with that, as they have said they have no current interest in porting more shmups.

Found some info on the Grev 3DS game from this blog which is apparently posting info from the Famitsu:
http://sinplelove.blog34.fc2.com/blog-entry-2962.html
Producer: Maruyama
Director: Hiroshi Iuchi (!!)
・Top-down tank shooter
・15 stages, and you can choose between A~L routes
・You shoot once and until the bullet disappears from the screen, you can't fire again
・B button fires shot, L and R reload
・There are three Final stages, and if you clear one you beat the game
・At the beginning of any stage, 20 cards are randomly displayed on the bottom of the screen, and if you match? 4 of them you get a special bonus. Either you can use a special weapon or your armor will regenerate.
・4 player simultaneous play. 4 people can play on 1 cartridge.

3DS?
What a waste of time.

Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
Not sure how much interest this will drum up, being on 3DS an all. 1 player bullet on screen? sounds odd, but suits the tank theme I guess. I think Vita will be the way to go for shooters though, although begrudgingly for me. Hope Cuillan is wrong re the future home of the genre

I hope this comes over. Sounds interesting. I've heard good things about the twin bee port for 3DS. So I'm hoping some STG games end up on the system.

Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
Have they specified if this is a downloadable title? It sure looks like it.
Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
The pics haven't been displaying for me for the last couple of andriasang updates. Anyone have any ideas why?
Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
Yeah, pretty sure I saw somewhere that this would be a downloadable title.Estebang wrote:Have they specified if this is a downloadable title? It sure looks like it.

@bcass
Try to clear your cache in the browser.

Also, if that ain't work you can still look at the pics on famitsu.com:

Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
Guess they're going REALLY old-school with this one...I personally hate being left defenseless so frequently in games like this, so if this design decision stands I'm pretty much guaranteed to skip it.Your tank can only fire one blast at a time. You can't fire again until the shot has left the screen.
Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
I think it looks alright and I might enjoy the 1-shot mechanic, have to make sure you plan and aim the shot carefully and I think it should be rather impressive when played expertly. Think of it like playing Pulstar using only fully charged shots?
OT about future consoles being glorified plug-in handhelds - people want cutting edge graphics and you need a big box to power and cool that GPU. What wouldn't surprise me though is having controllers or some kind of peripheral that has some standalone capability like the Dreamcast VMU but not so crappy.
OOT can you believe X360 and PS3 are 5/6 years old? How many generations of obsolete PC GPU tech is that?

Looks like one of these generic arena shooters. This wireframe "abstract" look is what you do when you´re too lazy to pick an actual art style.

Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
Yes, because Hudson was absorbed by Konami. A bunch of other stuff was also cancelled from Hudson as well... none of which I can recall.. well, you're just going to have to take my word for it.Frederik wrote:Looks like one of these generic arena shooters. Re: New G.rev shmup for 3DS
why would anyone bother releasing games on 3ds..... it's doomed to be a failure.
