Vic Viper of Salamander 2 in Lego

Post by curtydc »

Check out my recreation of the Vic Viper from Salamander 2. I've never played the game, but I loved the larger design of this particular Vic Viper. I did take a few artistic liberties, so those of you more familiar with this particular fighter will undoubtedly notice, but I think it's close enough to the source materials I had to work with (intro cinematic to Salamander 2)

Let me know what you think! Hope you all enjoy.

Give me a parts list right now you son of a bitch. RIGHT NOW I WANT IT, PLEASE.

I suggest doing revisions to make it more accurate, but it looks pretty damn cool as is.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

What's cool about custom built Lego sets is if you d/l the Lego Digital Designer program, and select from the available parts list, Lego will gather up all the parts + instruction manual, place everything inside a cool custom box & have it shipped out to you for a reasonable fee. The only stipulation is that the custom Lego model or diorama has to be your own original creation (it can't be of a copyrighted image or trademark) or else, Lego will reject said custom Lego submission. Go figure.

Back in the old days (the early 1980s & into the 1990s), it used to be that you had to buy a certain Lego set to acquire a certain speciality piece not found in any other Lego set). Of course nowdays, there are sites dedicated to selling bits 'n' pieces of speciality Lego parts individually. Some the speciality Lego blue roof bricks in the inverse 45 degress angle or even the 25 degree sloping roof bricks are quite HTF nowdays.

Cool Lego version of the Vic Viper you've got there, curtydc.

Do you have any other plans to build some other shmup fightercraft from the Dodonpachi or Raiden series in Lego form, curtydc?

I'm sure it'll take some time to figure out "brick by brick" what works out best in terms of trying to match the original sprite version of said fightercraft. Of course, sometimes, by trial & error, or by improvising, such engineering snafus can be overcome if applying new construction methods & concepts when building with Lego bricks.

Here's a thread with my own custom made mecha suit soldier made out of Lego bricks (definitely does use a lot of the old-school Lego blue roof bricks that are quite HTF nowdays): http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... mecha+suit

I didn't catalog the parts for this, but I haven't yet taken it apart. If I get enough interest for it, I may take some break down photos of it.

PC Engine Fan X! - I've built the Ikaruga and a very mini sized Astraea from Einhander. Those are also in my photo stream (link in signature). I have plans to eventually build a larger version of the Astraea or Endymion from Einhander, and an R-Type.

I've never heard of Dodonpachi, but I did a google search and if this is the ship, it definiately looks like it'd be fun to build!

I also intend on building the Sabre from Halo Reach, which I think looks similar to the ship form Dodonpachi

I checked out your blue Mech, it's nice, with the limited roof tile pieces it still manages to look sharp and detailed, I dig it:)

Thanks, curtydc. It was cool to build it back in 1985 but with a slightly different approach to overall design. I think several of them in different color schemes would be cool for an all-out war.

Oh wow, you built a Lego version of the Ikaruga fightercraft...that's awesome.

Yeah, that Dodonpachi Dai Fukkatsu (Dodonpachi Resurrection) fightercraft pic you posted would be ace in Lego form indeed. ^_~

I don't. There has been nothing Cave-related here where I live until the iPhone ports - the Raiden games on the other hand were all over the place until degenerates broke the cabinets. I for one had no idea about Cave or Raizing until I joined this forum and even then.

Not everyone lives in America or Japan where Cave material is more common.

This, very much. Also curious about any Raiden Lego builds - if you need 3D comparisons there's the Raiden DX opening vid along with II's rolling-out-from-trees display. And of course, III & IV in themselves are 3D. :P

Everyone who plays shmups is expected to know and love DDP. Even though the presentation is flameboyant, the music terrible, and the scoring mechanics a chore. On topic: Can't wait to see how the R9 turns out. It'll be tricky what with that unusual canopy and all.

Fixed. There aren't that many people here who adore DDP - it's just that we recommend it a lot as a starter game, since it's easy to start off on and all. Have you seen some of the flamewars that can spring up in a "what shmups should I play" thread when someone suggests DDP?

No I haven't actually. I just see Cave dominating the top 25 every year even though it's been pointed out before that some people who put them there don't even enjoy scoring with these games, which has me kind of lost on what the hell their appeal is.

If you've heard and can recognize the word "shmup" in 2011, there's a damn good chance you've also heard of Dodonpachi.

Maybe not played it--maybe not liked it--but heard of it.

I dunno man. It's pretty easy to overlook some titles what with how huge the genre is. I mean, that French STG documentary has some dude citing Battle Garegga as the first maniac shmup instead of the suggested Batsugun. And most people don't realize that Raiden itself is a derivative of Twin Cobra, often citing it as the father of all modern shooters.

It's very well made. It looks like something official rather than a fan made.

Some instructions would be great for assemble our own Vic Viper.

Love it how you didn't use too many special bricks, but mainly normal bricks. If my Legos were still around, I'd instantly try to rebuild this. Great work.

Wow, that is amazing! I like the Ikaruga and Einhander ones as well. :D I still play with legos occasionally with my students, I'll show them the picture of your Vic Viper to inspire them.

I while back I remember seeing a bionicle (?) Radiant silvergun or Ikaruga ship, have you seen those?

Looks incredible! I'm amazed that you were able to get that close to the game/art model.

Forget the cliche ceramic cats or beer signage, I'd rather have something like that sitting around my home!

That mini Einhander ship is awesome. Everything else too, but that really stood out.
Also, is your Ikaruga model colored differently on each side, or did you do it all in one color?

[Also never heard of Dodonpachi?! Go MAME it this instant!]

Lovely Vic Viper design curtydc. Really digging this, this and this picture as well. Nice execution on the back angle shot, that rear fin looks incredible.

I'm actually not that avid of a Shmup fan, I love the genre, but I'm terrible at the games:( I only own R-Type Final (still haven't beaten it) and Einhander (beat it:), I've played some others, like various older R-types and Gradius, some lame ones on the Nintendo DS, and a few older PC shmups (Raptor was one of them I think, loved that game).

This might be what you are thinking of.

You guys should all go bug this guy to finish his Ikaruga, he's been working on it for a long time, but still hasn't completed it. Maybe if he gets some encouragement he'll pick the project back up!

I love the mini Einhander, I'm definately going to do a larger version in the near future, I'll probably have to purchase more blue pieces though. My Ikaruga is only white, I should do a new version that is both black and white, that would be awesome!

I fixed my sig link.
