Haven't seen that one yet. I'm suddenly in an Allen mood tonight so I'll check it out. Also need to see Purple Rose of Cairo and Zelig.emphatic wrote:You guys' seen Broadway Danny Rose? It's my fave Allen film.

Limitless has the Megaman 2 intro.
Broadway Danny Rose was great, btw. So was Purple Rose of Cairo, though it left me with some hardcore existential angst.

Oh my! I didn't see Alien until after high school, which is too bad. A lot of my friends saw it when it first came out (grade school) and it obviously freaked them the hell out. What a wonderful way to be scarred as a child.mesh control wrote:Watching Alien for the first time.

Try watching the other three sequels to the classic 1979 sci-fi/horror hybrid flick of Alien afterwards. Are you watching it on Blu-Ray, mesh control?mesh control wrote:Watching Alien for the first time.
Alien Factoid: The famous scene where the alien chestburster creature first makes it's grand appearance, the intial reaction/shock from the actors/actresses is genuine as the director didn't tell them what was going to happen when filming that scene was rolling. Priceless.
The 1979 Kenner produced Alien action figure toy goes for some serious $$$ nowdays, especially if offered in mint condition with the mint original factory shipping box as well.
The McFarlane produced Movie Maniacs lineup of Alien action figures are ace, including the deluxe boxed set from the classic Aliens flick with the super posable & articulated Queen Alien & a female victim smeared with dried alien secretions diorama set. Definitely, a bitch indeed.
Should be interesting to see how the new Alien prequel flick fares out for the upcoming 2012 year. It'll be released in 3-D as well.

I just noticed that Koyaanisqatsi is finally getting a blu-ray release on 13th January. This is one of the films I've been eagerly anticipating seeing in HD for years. The DVD is good, but the cinematography begs for the extra detail. AFAIK it's only being released in Germany for now, but the film has no dialogue so it's a non-issue.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Oh, I've been trying to remember the name of that title. That's the one in Inuit, right? I might look into it.Daigohji wrote:I just noticed that Koyaanisqatsi is finally getting a blu-ray release on 13th January. Just watched Happiness of the Katakuris. Good film, and Miike has a great sense of humor for once.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Koyaanisqatsi is the Godfrey Reggio film that used the Phillip Glass music score (I forgot who the cinematographer is, but he also did his own films in the same style... Baraka being one of them). There's three parts to it, but the first one is the groundbreaking film that influenced video and commercial editing.RNGmaster wrote:Oh, I've been trying to remember the name of that title. The movie with the Inuit could be the semi-documentary, Nanook Of The North, or you may also be thinking about a different kind of indigenous person. In that case, there is also Dersu Uzala, a Japanese-Soviet production, which also won awards and accolades.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Nope, it was Atanarjuat, which was a popular film from Canada a while ago. Thanks for the suggestions, though - the Inuit are a fascinating group of people.

Southland Tales.
I don't care what the haters say, Donnie Darko was a fine movie and I have time for it. Southland Tales was so utterly destroyed by the critics and box office I didn't pay it any mind.
What an idiot :reminds self once again never to trust 'critics':
Has anyone seen this? I initially couldn't tell if I'd just watched the worlds biggest pile of drivel or a little modern masterpiece. Today I'm leaning toward the latter.
A fiercely prophetic satire based on a possible capitalist future with a plot that mirrors the Book of Revelations. Wow. If anyone's wondering, I watched the rare as hell original Cannes film festival version, unedited without the rearrangement. I understand it's meant to be even more confusing this way, but it really didn't bother me at all. I think the failure of this is borderline criminal, but unsurprising. I give Kelly massive props for just doing it the way he wanted though, even if it ruined his career.

Went and saw the premiere of Tower Heist yesterday (not by design). Brett Ratner is not a good director. The start was rushed and garbled. It settled down a bit after that but I would only give it a 3/5.

Drive.
Not a big fan of Gossling or his rather dark character but it didn't bother me too much. Mad props for doing something different w/ the soundtrack. I can hate a film b/c of a mediocre at best soundtrack. The thing that sucks most about this is the marketing. I would say I find it insulting that the US film industry must trick US movie goers into thinking something is an action-packed cock-swing-a-thon... but then I see Black Friday commercials and swing past Wal-Mart and shit when I visit, and am reminded why. Anyone remember the commercials for The American?

In Time.
Yeah, pretty stellar (if flawed) concept, very much in tune with the current economic/capitalist downward spiral.
Unfortunately the film is poor, to put it nicely. Acting was weak, direction flaky, dialogue atrocious, plot threads utterly ridiculous, and chock full of holes. Its interesting hooks began to fizzle out fairly quickly and all that was left was a crappy Hollywood movie entirely hinged around a singularly decent idea.
It's a shame they just keep fucking this stuff up all the time. Just once I'd like to be pleasantly surprised.
Best thing in it was this, by quite a long way:

Just watched Alexandre Aja's High Tension (Haute Tension).
Pretty good French slasher movie that lives up to its tense credentials. The twist was a little much for me, but the general directing was above most similar fare.
Not surprised he was picked up by Hollywood for the Hills Have Eyes remake, which was pretty damn good all things considered.

Yeah, that twist ending is sooo bogus. The ending absolutely ruined the film from me. He could have simply just made an awesome slasher/revenge flick, but instead he had to go all M. Night Shamalamadingdong.

Finished watching Shaolin. Good but somehow not great. Something missing...
Seen the new Conan the Barbarian. The original kills it.
Always good to see Ron Perlman, but that's about it.

Just watched Forbidden World after it turned up on Circuit Man's thread:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=39274
Shit-tastic is right. Seriously, it's such a piece of shit movie I'm not sure how entertained I was even by its shittiness. It's not up to the standard of Frank Henenlotter by a long shot.
The gratuitous nudity and sex was hilariously tacked on, but it did prompt the best quip in the film: after the hero just spent the night boning some blonde, he walks in on naked scientist girl no.2 in her steam bath. She says: "You look tired, why don't you have a steam bath too?", to which he replies, "Well, I have had a hard night."

After watching the uncut version of Southland Tales on IFC one day, it was an interesting film even if some scenes didn't make any sense. I do see the character as the second coming of the Messiah indeed type of vibe, especially at the end. Plently of cameo appearances in this film as well. It's out on Blu-Ray also.Skykid wrote:Southland Tales.![]()

Mesrine: Killer Instinct and Public Enemy #1
Damn good two volume movie about notorious French bankrobber/criminal badass Jacques Mesrine. Both movies are ~2 hours long and drag a bit, but there's plenty of bank robberies, gun fights, jail breaks and other sorts of madness, and Vincent Cassel is very good. I've got the Carlos miniseries queued up for next week, which looks really good too.

I watched the first Mesrine.. I found it to be a bit disjointed. Nonstop cuts to various moments/people in his life that didn't really resonate because they're treated so briefly and there's no real central thesis to it. Then again it was highly celebrated in France, so what do I know. I tabled its followup - does it get better in those regards?

Re: Movies you've just watched
They're both pretty similar in that regard. The second felt more focused to me because it had less time to cover/territory to travel but I've seen reviewers say it's the other way around. I didn't mind the cursory treatment of some of his relationships and characters, mostly because the focus was clearly on Cassel and this dude's increasingly large ego. Especially so in the second movie which has him trying to cast himself as some kind of revolutionary, when clearly he's just after money as a source of power and wealth, that you get the feeling he was just a self aggrandizing bank robber. I don't know how accurate that is to the real life Mesrine, but I thought they were both pretty enjoyable, if not particularly deep treatments of the guy.
