Nyu Media Localizing a bunch of shmups
Re: Nyu Media Localizing a bunch of shmups
It would be interesting to see how many people got Jamestown and the Gundemonium Collection, that would give you an estimate of how many would get it on PC... provided it's on Steam, has achievements and all that shit that is a must nowadays.
You can cry DRM-free and non-Steam all you want but, outside here, the majority wants all the shit on Steam. While the platform doesn't bother me, it just turns the PC into another console at that rate. Diversity helps. I like when I can buy and download directly from the dev.
I already have the games so I'm not so sure I would get them unless there is some sort of incentive (score challenges like in Gundemonium, some hidden extra) but the tendency is that all extras have to become DLC (I liked it when this used to be called "expansion" rather than "Divert Lots of Cash") or paid material so...
As for Touhou: if it goes commercial, Touhouket, Reitaisai, everything is over. There are like, how many? Dozens of events per year in which Touhou circles took up like 70% of the registrations? Damn. While people can make fan works of other IPs, it's not the same. ZUN gave green light for fan works (with some restrictions after the Maikaze anime incident and other things) and for a man to single-handedly make such a brutal fan base is, well, crazy.
Ditto on CAVE. They should give Gabe a Death Smiles fuck pillow and then we would see all their stuff on Steam.

It was the fanbase which made the marketing... all of the images and doujins and arranges CD called for more fans and so on... ZUN hasn't made a think to make the fanbase, only not getting on the way.Observer wrote:

Estebang, you want Touhou to just be some brand, despite your wish for Touhou as a series to be "remade" somehow, by companies who have literally nothing to do with anything. I can't even explain just how wrong that is. You are either trolling or a complete fool at a very basic level.

Don't look now, but you've just described every Touhou game except for the scoring part. Though for the record, I'm sure TD is still better than TSoEW.O. This site seems to say that the games wont be released all in one go but come separately, with Exceed 2nd first then Black Package http://www.gameconnect.net/gc/indie/new ... meConnect)
Good point many of the games from the late 90s have faster bullets, but in the danmaku sub genre CAVE is especially high octane especially futari original and feveronAliquantic wrote:I'm very amused to see Cave being held as an example of fast paced now, among all the other, faster-paced arcade STGsTrevHead (TVR) wrote:This, I would be mass producing voodoo dolls if next years CAVE title was a slow ass Touhou. It's too troublesome trying to explain something when you call the people fool when they give their opinion so keep thinking what you want about older jewels like Perfect Cherry Blossom and Imperishable night...Despatche wrote:Estebang, you want Touhou to just be some brand, despite your wish for Touhou as a series to be "remade" somehow, by companies who have literally nothing to do with anything. As for ZUN's job, he stated on an interview that he has a part time job... he hasn't specified which or where.

How many people BOUGHT Trizeal for either console, or put a coin in the arcade machine for that matter? That thing was quixotic.O. Van Bruce wrote:now seriously... how many people would BUY a shmup if it were for PC?

I think it's worth noting that the PC commercial shmup scene is relatively small if Steam is any indication -- too many shooters and we'll end up oversaturated pretty fast.Zeron wrote:That first comment what a cool chap eh?
That said, yeah I guess shmups aren't hipster enough for Mr. Cobalt. Bring the man something new and original from Japan!
As far as I can tell going by the leaderboards, a lot more people bought Jamestown than GC.Observer wrote:It would be interesting to see how many people got Jamestown and the Gundemonium Collection, that would give you an estimate of how many would get it on PC... provided it's on Steam, has achievements and all that shit that is a must nowadays.
Also, Jamestown runs at a slight crawl on my aging laptop. If it shows up on PSN I'll be picking it up immediately.

Re: Nyu Media Localizing a bunch of shmups
I didn't see what DD platform they were releasing these on, although I would assume it would be Steam? The only other DD channel I have any faith in is GOG, but they haven't expanded into newer games. (Quite yet...I expect it to come sooner or later though.)
And unless they completely remade the game from that version I wouldn't go out of my way to get the PC version. Raiden 3 has to be the most boring game in the entire series. The graphics just scream generic. The gameplay as well feels a bit too stodgy compared to the rest of the series for me, but that at least can be ignored as just my opinion. I think the game just suffers too much from the curse of "first 3D game from a JPN developer" though. (Like Deathsmiles 2, etc.)
$20 for Raiden 3? That's too much, you can get it used for $5 (or less) for the PS2 version.MathU wrote:But I don't want the PS2 version.Estebang wrote:PS2 version is plentiful and goes for $20 on average.MathU wrote:I wish they'd do Raiden III. We'd wanted to localize this one too, but Tennen-sozai doesn't have the uncompiled code any more. We proposed to Capcom that we publish the game as an 'import' (i.e. the original Japanese) version. The issue was that the ESRB might not approve publishing a game in Japanese, but after some months of discussion they finally approved it.

Re: Nyu Media Localizing a bunch of shmups
Have you guys looked at Valhellio? It's an accessible, entry-level shmup with a Cave-like scoring system--and that's on top of the selling point of well-known artist Tony Taka's involvement. The problem is that it would be a much bigger translation job than usual, with the visual novel scenes.

How are these gonna be sold? Steam? Direct from the site?

Yay, DRM'd digital distibution. So I can't even sell/give away the games if/when I don't want them anymore. Awesome.
Oh, wait.
