I feel the same about the streamline dub. I bought the VHS in 1990, and was watching Ninja Turtles at about that time. Wasn't the guy who did Kaneda one of the voices in the Ninja Turtles cartoon? I've never heard the Pioneer dub. I bought the first DVD release and just listen to the Japanese audio track with Eng. subs now.maxlords wrote:but I've also watched Trigun SO many times that his voice is inextricably linked to the show in my mind and hearing him in Akira is SO disconcerting I literally can't enjoy the movie.

The Streamline version didn't even make sense.
I know people who didn't even like the movie, until they saw the Pioneer version. Then they were like "oh, that makes a lot more sense now!".
I guess some people can't get over the TMNT voices.

Oh, yeah, I'm not into the Streamline dub because it's good. I like it because it's so bad, but totally kitsch. It's one of those where my classmates and I would find ourselves quoting its nonsense/unintelligible linesevil_ash_xero wrote:The Streamline version didn't even make sense.

"I'VE GOT AKIRA!"

Then, there was the guy who sounded like McGruff, the crime fighting dog!

Oh I'm definitely with you. When I first got the Pioneer version it was like a different film.evil_ash_xero wrote:The Streamline version didn't even make sense.

But you're always attached to your first. I practically wore my VHS tape out, so the streamline dub will always have a special place in my heart.

I didn't even recognize Cam Clarke from TMNT. It's just that I'm so used to him as Kaneda and I'm already SO used to Johnny Yong Bosch as Vash that I don't enjoy him as Kaneda. It's too confusing. I don't even care that the dub is bad on the Streamline. I've read the manga, I can fill in the gaps. They should just redub it with the Pioneer text and Cam Clarke reading it.evil_ash_xero wrote:The Streamline version didn't even make sense.

I bought the steelbook DVD when it came out....literally watched part of it and had to shut it off. It's sat on my shelf ever since. I can't watch it. I couldn't even pay attention at all cause all I could think was "Shut up Vash, I'm trying to watch Akira!"

Some DVD prints of Akira had the Japanese track included only as DTS, bizarrely. Not a problem on computers where it can be emulated, but watching it on come basic DVD player (say, a PS2 without external thingie), you were bound to listen to the American dub.

After taking a listen to the new English dub(seeing if it was better), I just go with the JP track now, as with all my animes. It's almost always superior. Princess Monanoke though...I think the Eng. dub is actually better(except for Billy Bob Thornton).GaijinPunch wrote:You *do* know there's a Japanese audio track, right?I bought the steelbook DVD when it came out....literally watched part of it and had to shut it off. i have the uk 2 dvd release of akira that includes both dubs. i can't watch the streamline dub since it comes off more like akira: the abridged version. i just can't take it seriously.
It's about "realizing their actuality." And judging by the look on Jane's face, she's realized it a couple of times already.

Got this, and watched it. Very pleased. Looks great, and the sound is a big improvement too.
HOWEVER....the subtitles for the Japanese version, are the exact same ones, for the English version.
The Pioneer DVD had different subtitles, for the two different languages.
That's kind of sloppy.

I hate subs. Avoid them whenever possible. Also, no Cam Clarke

I have no idea why people cling to the Streamline version...I wonder if I could sell mine? Like new VHS, baby!

I already have it on VHS. I used to have two or three copies - one from Streamline and one from Orion, who distributed Streamline later

I remember that Orion release. It had a cool cover.
Not as cool as the one with Kaneda walking towards his bike, but cool.
