RGB (scart) to NTSC Component
Hey, I have this awesome little flat screen tv with component video in from Sony and I would love to be able to use my saturn, snes and dreamcast with component video. I know these do not output component, but rather RGB. I have seen converters that do just that but with scart (euro) RGB. My question is, could I use a euro scart rgb out on lets say an snes or saturn that is NTSC native and convert the signal to component without any problems? If not, could I fix this by rewiring the scart plug myself?

Yes, RGB is neither NTSC or PAL, it's just the pinouts and connectors are sometimes different between regions and hardwares. So if the RGB-->Component converter input is configured for the Euro Scart RGB pinout, then you'll just need Euro Scart RGB cables for each console you'd like to use. Be cautious when shopping for Euro Scart cables - sometimes they're wired for composite only.thchardcore wrote:My question is, could I use a euro scart rgb out on lets say an snes or saturn that is NTSC native and convert the signal to component without any problems?

I am doing exactly what your talking about already.. So yes it works.
I thought I told you this in a PM. The only problem is that the transcoder that performs this function does not carry audio (most that I have seen do not as they are for DVD players which have RCA's). So, you either need a modded Euro RGB cable that has RCA's for audio or you will have to add RCA's to the console itself.
The picture quality I get on my HDTV is very impressive.
Master system
Genesis 1 & 2
SNES
PS1 and 2
Saturn
Dreamcast
Neo Geo & CD
All these have RGB output through SCART. N64, Turbo duo and 3DO do not carry RGB unless they are modded. Gamecube SCART leads from Europe will not work with NTSC Gamecubes as Nintendo Europe changed the pinout on Euro Cubes. You can buy Component leads for Cube anyway.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

This is a *GREAT* idea!!!
I had been seriously considering purchasing a 15kHz RGB monitor. But they are old and the screen are too small.
Upscan converter to VGA, did not improve much. Since the VGA box cannot do much to the already mess up singal of the composit input.
I have been wondering if there is any ways to convert the RGB into composit, since they both sperate the Red, Green & Blue colour and are running at 15kHz...
And then I found this thrend. I am off to hunt down this converter now.

I have just bought one of those RGB to Conponents Converter.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 7539321093
As was said previously, the converter does not have the audio out.
I have to hunt down those hacked RGB cables with seperate audio out.
But after some searching, I found that there is no such cables for SFC, MD, Saturn.
I am lucky of being one of those who own an Model 1 MD which has a separate audio out on the console.
So problem remains for SFC and Saturn.
I am wondering, in stead of hacking the RGB cable for each console, could we just modify the "RGB to Conponents Converter" by adding audio output?
Seeing those RGB cables for MD Model 1 only reinforce my feeling... Those have a seperate plug to get the stedio audio singals from the autio out at the front of the console.
I am thinking that since the RGB cables can be hacked into output audio at seperate RCA plugs, Does that means there is no singals convertion/filtering is needed?
If so that means the audio singals is output to some of those pins which the converter have no use for.
The modification can easily be done by connecting those unmapped pins in the female SCRAT plug to some RCA plugs.
Anyone can confirm this theroy of mine is in fact correct?
By the way, anyone of you happens to got the specification for the RGB pins mapping?

Well, these cables really cost $$$neorichieb1971 wrote:www.ravengames.co.uk
They will make SCART cables with audio cables attached but they are pricey.

If I can figure out the pins layout, I can just mod the converter. That won't cost me more than $5.

Anyways in the worst case, I would need to buy the Saturn and Super Famicom cables from Raven Games...

Thank for the information neorichieb1971, it really helps.

Yeah, I had a similar problem in the past. Basically, I wanted to connect my console of choice to a better speaker (stock tv speakers are usually crappy) using RGB SCART cables. You've got two choices:SAM wrote:As was said previously, the converter does not have the audio out.I have to hunt down those hacked RGB cables with seperate audio out.

1-track one of those cables which have the extra audio cables/outputs
2-buy one of those SCART AV selectors that have separate audio outputs (these can be purchased for around $10-15)

Wow, that great. Thank you matt.matt wrote:I can make up scart+audio cables for much less than RavenGames, FYI.
I know that Dreamcast and Playstation scart cables with separate audio outputs were in mass production for quite a while - they should be pretty cheaply available now.

Could you make one Saturn and one Super Famicom for me? Do you accept PayPal payment? PM me for payment details.
I would definately come to you again if I cannot found the cables for Dreamcast and Playstation.

you could use one of these to 'extract' the audio from a SCART cable:

I use one of those at the end of a splitter like this:

to hook up all my consoles to the single SCART input of the TV in my cab, the audio goes via the RCA plugs to a seperate amp for the speakers. It's not the ultimate solution, but a cheap way to hook up 5 consoles to 1 TV.
I like the fact that there's no switching involved, I only have to turn on the console I want to use to see it's image.
