LCD/LED TN panels really that bad for a TATE setup?

Post by bytestorm »

Hi!
I recently found out that Shmups are teh bloody awsomeness itself! :) I know i am late, but hey, better now than never!

Anyhow, I am looking for a nice monitor to use with mame and my superguns.

ppl seems to dislike TN panels, but from what i can understand IPS and MVA panels suffers from inputlag, but have better viewing angle? (High ms a problem?)

Is TN panels really that bad? and if so, can anyone recommend a good non TN monitor för my TATE solution?

The pivot function is also a pain, since not many monitors have it from what i can see :(

Last but not least.. shall i go for 16:9 och 16:10? This monitor will mainly be for Shmups.

I dont have truckloads of cash so please not above 300 usd

Thanks in advance guys/ladies!

The biggest problem for TN panels when oriented vertically is color shift. If you have a TN panel in front of you, with your head centered, raise up and down a bit. It should only take an inch or so of movement from the sweet spot before you see significant changes in color. I'm looking at one now and as I move my head down about an inch the entire screen gets dark. Larger TN panels also show discoloration in the corners from the same issue. Moving your head left/right and everything should look generally ok. The good thing is that you won't raise and lower your head so this isn't a problem for PC usage.

Now you take that panel and rotate it 90 degrees. Moving your head left/right even an inch and you drastically reduce image quality. It's relatively difficult to keep yourself in the perfect spot for the TATE games to look ok.

Hmm you are probably right.. :( hmm but when checking the other panels (ips, mva,va etc) i am a little bit lost.
And they are alot more expensive.

Anyone who could shed some more light? Maybe someone who already have a similar setup?
I cant be the only one wanting to use a lcd vertically :)

the latest generation of IPS panels (for example the Dell 2312) really isn't this expensive, so there's no reason to buy a TN panel anymore. The Dell is also the fastest display on the market today (in terms of zero input lag).

The 24" model is fine as well. It's 16:10 instead, is a few ms slower (input lag) and is a bit more expensive.
