Best ACTUAL Rock Bands Still Left
TWITCHDOCTOR:
We just got the bonus CD done this weekend and I'm duping them tommorrow.
Without glossing myself (cause that's taboo), all I'm allowed to say about it is: Be one of the first 100 or you'll miss the boat big time! Don't pussyfoot around in other words.
Availabilty is still...right......around.......*guh* the corner!
Ok. man that's doable. I'll send you a stack and some mailers and you can sign them and get them out to those who request it."We" still ROCK!...
Vodkatron baby!!!
First 100 CD's of "Ride The Boss" include a signed poster! Get em while you can my man.
(well, I will at least sign it!)

stephen malkumus and the jicks kick a lot of ass, quite predictable really considering he's the lead from pavement.
and i love pretty hate machine! best nin album in my opinion and it ends on the best track that he's ever written.
also much respect for ben folds, and although he is rocking less hard recently and writting great songs rather than punk on a piano, i'd still say he's far more rock than 90% of the pap out there. everyone get hold of song for the dumped
oh and soad rule. i used to dance as a kid to sugar at the under 18s rock night hehe. 'i sit. in my desolate room. no lights. no music.....'
i also really rate franz ferdinand, and their new single rules.
i know that 'rock' is debatable but i look for my rock in less metal terms now as there are so many bad bad bad bands producing 'metal' that it hurts to find any good ones out. real death metal is just grumble and gothic bollocks. all the metal bands that i used to love are now starting to really suck. just look at machine head and entombed....

Coheed and Cambria
My Chemical Romance
Muse
Porcupine Tree
The thing is, most of the new bands that play straight up hard rock are just ripoffs like Jet. I bet Velvet Revolver is exactly what you're looking for. There are also a lot of good metal bands these days.
Arsis (without a doubt the best new metal band)
Between the Buried and Me (new album Alaska is fucking amazing)
As I Lay Dying (more like as i lay CRYING am i rite?)
The Black Dhalia Murder (not very original but fun to listen to)
Lilitu
Lamb of God
Esqarial
Scar Symmetry
Augury

I agree. A lot of the bands people have been listing just aren't rock bands. I gotta give MadSteelDarkness props for listing my namesake, though I don't think I'd call them a rock band. Queens of the Stoneage has some good stuff, but they will forever wallow in the shadow of Kyuss in my opinion.
Other than that, for my money the only rock band that matters nowadays is Clutch. The new record is triple a from top to fuckin' bottom. Dixie Witch is worth a listen, as is Witchcraft. Other than that, I second Zeke, and maybe some Gideon Smith and the Dixie Damned, RPG and a bunch of others I can't think of right now.
Feedback will set you free.

Thanks for the props, AK. I guess my definitions of rock are pretty broad (Punk? Check. Grindcore? Sure, why not? Post-Pussy Galore blooze noise? Absolutely.). But then that's just my own personal taste (or lack thereof).Acid King wrote:PaCrappa wrote:

BTW, I've got to second Dixie Witch and the Supersuckers, as well as third (?) Zeke. I actually got to see the suckers play live out in the middle of Lavaca street here several years ago (as well as many other times since then), with the great Johnny Gimble(!) sitting in on fiddle...for free.

Re: Best ACTUAL Rock Bands Still Left
I ran into a problem trying to think of rock bands simply because so many band slike Acid King ride the line. Does stoner rock count as rock? Does doom count? etc... so i kept it to just plain old rock. If expanded I'd addMadSteelDarkness wrote: Thanks for the props, AK. I guess my definitions of rock are pretty broad (Punk? Check. i know that that at the drive in song is on in/casino/out but does anyone know its name? i can't remember for the life of me and my girlfriend has pinched my copy...

Hate to say it but - all bands that come on the radio will let you down eventually. All of them.
Soundgarden destroys Audioslave - as does Rage.
Live hasn't produced a decent album since Secret Samhadi and Manson has lost all his braincells. Holywood was the last great Manson cd - probably for all time. I got that new NIN disc, by the way, and it can't even hold a candle to The Fragile - much less Broken or Downward Spiral. Trent spends most of the record whining about how he's not big-time anymore (at least thats how i see it).
That's why i only listen to music that i find on my own nowdays. Not stuff that's fed to me.

I'd second that. Although I really feel embarrassed commenting on music full stop at the minute - I heard something on TV that caught my ears the other weekend, thought 'Not bad...' and on paying a bit more attention, turned out it was Fightstar. Ouch.
And Soundgarden shit Audioslave for breakfast. When Audioslave write a song that rocks like Full On Kevins Mom, Rusty Cage, Drawing Flies or Ty Cobb, I'll listen.

So are you guys into reds, bennies or both?dpful wrote:I know this isn't the most relevant to the thread, but My rock band has been rocking for eleven years

I tried both. Icarus Line is better and they do have a certain chutzpah to 'em but they're still not my bag. Both bands suffer from taking themselves too seriously and from songs that are too long. IMO "ACTUAL Rock Bands" can get the job done in two minutes. I haven't the attention span for an ubertriumphant four minute "rock song" (ie: ballad with loud guitars).Marc wrote:The Icarus Line (Pa, dunno if you've ever heard, if not you may like I feel? 1st LP 'Mono' only though)
Planes Mistaken For Stars (Again, heads up on these guys Pa. Scuzzily produced, pedal to the metal rock and fuckingroll).
I'm going to find a way to listen to every band I haven't heard in this thread. MySpace is helping nicely.

Well, after three years of hearing about them and really liking the name, what I feared to contemplate has shown itself to be the truth.
...and you will know us by the trail of the dead really really sucks. Crybabies. I knew it the second I saw their website: http://www.trailofdead.com/ And it was painfully reinforced by their songs.
"ACTUAL Rock Band" they are not.
Next!

Pf... I'm over it. My tastes have been described as "eclectic" (a word I hate) and I'm starting to see that my niche is really very very small. It's a big dumb musical world out there and I'm about to go back to being very sheltered within my own tastes. But before I do, I will leave comments about the bands I did manage to listen to before becoming sick with you guys' idea of rock. And I don't mean that last sentence in an insulting way, I just like what I like. Oh yeah, I know how people identify with their favorite bands like a band is an extension of a fan's own character so I'll leave out the names and that way nobody gets all butthurt on the internet today.
Xxxxxx xxx Xxxx - It's over. The word "punk" no longer means anything when it's used in relation to the word "rock". This band seems to follow the Metallica invented three part formula. Start hard, go to the slowjam in the middle (this is the Arwen part; for the ladies) and then go back to your heavily produced chunkity guitars and contrived screaming sound for a strong finish. Typical post-Pantera stuff.
Xxxxxx- Glad it's not me listening to this on a regular basis.
Xxxxxxxxx- I knew I would regret trying to listen to every band in this thread that I 'd never heard. Did this band do the theme for the movie Neverending Story?
Xxxxxx Xxxx- So dramatic and triumphant. Ballads. Ballads, even if they have heavy metal guitars, aren't rock. Rock was never supposed to be so trumped up and flowery.
Xxxx Xxxxxx xx Xxxxx- Do you suppose this guy ever listened to Pantera? I wonder.
Xxxxxx- See above. Add generic comment about Metallica's co-ed-friendly songwriting formula. Bon Jovi cover? Not funny.
Xxxxxxx- http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... 0823114732 Okay, so that's not the band. I did find their site and their audio section is down. I can tell that this is some serious Dungeons and Dragons rock. I probably wouldn't be into it.
Xxxxxxx- Wow. And I thought I knew what D&D rock was. Apparently new standards were being set since the last time I heard anything in the genre.
Xxxxx Xxxxxx- Mostly Wimpy.
I just couldn't keep going. *Cranks up The Spits*

Not to bust in on this too much, but I'm curious about a couple of things you've said, Pa...I really don't listen to the type of stuff mentioned in this thread, so I'm not really in tune with "contemporary rock" or whatever you'd care to call it, but some of the stuff you mentioned caught my attention, mainly your preference of shorter songs and less "flowery and trumped up" music in general, and saying that "ballads" (I guess songs that don't fit the above descriptions fit under there?) aren't really "rock." I have no problem with your preferences, but if nothing else it seems that you have a rather narrow definition, not just of music you like (again, no problem with that, I'm much the same), but of "rock" as well...it sounds like you'd only consider 2-minute power-chord-fests as "real" rock, and anything more lengthy or complex than that as something else. Those sorts of credentials would seem to really limit what the genre would be able to do, if they were applied more widely...they seem vaguely reminiscent of the play/movie Amadeus, wherein the "experts" criticize Mozart for having "too many notes" in his work.
Again, I'm not criticizing your tastes here, I'm just curious if something along the lines of the above is actually what you mean when you talk about "rock" according to your own definition.
