This week I finally got around to installing my Battle Bakraid PCB that Malc sent me last month... To keep it short I love this game, I had played it on Mame and thought that I would probably like it but up close and personal in the cab this is a **great** game!
Anyway, I was wondering why it gets hardly any love - I have seen Malcs 10/10 and an 8/10 from Ord plus an enthusiastic writeup from the Sheep but it seems to hardly get any respect/mentions in forums compared with Batrider and Garegga. I remember when Ibara was released someone said it was Garegga 2, someone else said no it was Garegga 3 cos Batrider was spiritually part of the same series (have people forgotten Bakraid?).
I have Batrider but have not put much time into it, first impressions are that I preder Bakraid; is Garegga so much better than Bakraid? I have played Garegga on Mame and it seems pretty good (need to get the PCB at some point) but surely its not THAT much better??
Does anyone else like this game?
Battle Bakraid - Why No Love
I'm with you on this - I prefer this to the original Garegga, and I never really liked Batrider much anyway.

Battle Bakraid is a wonderful shooter. I think it's just the suiciding thing that upsets a lot of people.

You only have to worry about that when you're playing for score. Unlike Garegga, where you run in to a wall simply by getting further in to the game, there is no wall of rank to run in to in Bakraid and it can easily be one credited without suiciding.Ord wrote:Battle Bakraid is a wonderful shooter. Feedback will set you free.

Yeah, but a LOT of people play for score, over a 1cc. And even when you've 1ccd Bakraid your going to want to get great scores, so when the suiciding element comes into play then it sometimes rubs people up the wrong way.

I like the game a lot, though in a sense I suppose it's more "polarized" than Garegga is (though Garegga is definitely more "polarizing," heh heh). In Garegga, while rank control and scoring well are more or less required just to finish the game, you can work your way up into it a bit at a time, even though it does take awhile to get the hang of; as Icarus's ST mentions, at first you can just ignore rank to get the hang of things, then start leaving behind a few powerups, from there you can experiment with using bombs for scoring rather than defense, and so on and so forth. In Bakraid, while if you're just going for a straight 1CC you can almost ignore the rank, if you do want to play for score you have to play COMPLETELY differently, and you have to do things PERFECTLY or else your score run is toast. There's not much "middle ground" in Bakraid, you're either able to bomb and suicide properly in order to extend your chains, or you're not, and you just have to crack away at it again and again until you get it right, unlike Garegga, where you "work your way up" to "ideal" play.
On a less important note, while Garegga's look is very defined and unique, Bakraid's is horribly generic; of course, its bullets are also easier to see than Garegga's, so it's sort of a worthwhile tradeoff. In any event, I like both games for different reasons; Bakraid, for a rookie like myself, is easier to just pick up and play, but I can never picture myself scoring well in it. Garegga is harder to get into, but it's a more gradual incline all the way, rather than the proverbial "flat plains to a sheer cliff" that Bakraid makes you scale.

ill6, have you checked my high score thread and Icarus' ST in their respective forums? You can find some more info there.
After spending a lot of time with the game I now consider normal mode to be pretty much a waste of time if you're gonna be playing for score. Be a man and go for Advanced right away and don't look back.

Bakraid is fun, but unlike Garegga's "pick and mix" scoring style - where you are free to take scoring sections as you please if the situation warrants it - scoring in Bakraid requires seriously heavy memorisation, perfect timing and perfect positioning of both bomb usage and suicides.
While you can play the game plain and simple like a regular shooter, if you want to go score hunting, be prepared for a lot of frustration, more so than breaking a chain in Daioujou. Worst thing is, scoring requires a steady stream of Extends coming your way. Once you break the chain, as many others have mentioned, the scoring credit is effectively dead at that point.
Still, I like it, and may return to it at some point down the line. Like its predecessor, it warrants serious practice to be able to score proficiently, and if you like that sort of thing, then it's a good game.

Have not 1CC'd Normal yet though - get killed at last boss.
To be honest I have not been bothering with all that suiciding stuff in order to get massive scrores; just been playing it for survival and completion.... Look forward to moving into score mode later.
