MAME and the frameskip option

Post by infested_ysy »

I have been wondering... what does frameskipping do if you use it while playing shmups on MAME? Would it affect your controls or performance if you leave it on auto frameskip, rather than 0 frameskip (no frameskip)?

I'm asking this because my computer's specs aren't really impressive, and just fine to play all the shmups on MAME plus, although it might get choppy at times when the screen's filled with gazillion of shots from all sorts of enemy, and me using the bomb, causing the frameskip to kick in (I run MAME plus on default settings, and by default, frameskip's set to 'auto'). So yeah, I'm asking if turning off the frameskip would fix this or not.

My advice would be to switch of frame skipping and see if it makes a difference. It is a performance hit any any emulator but your PC might be fine. Just give it a try - it won't kill your MAME. :)

I normally turn off the auto frameskip. On 95% of games, my computer won't frameskip anyway, and with the games it does frameskip on, I'd rather have a small amount of slowdown once in awhile rather than the constantly varying chop yielded by auto frameskip. Anything that requires frameskipping more than 50% of the time I pretty much won't play at all.
