(I dont have a PS3) But also check out that new Pixeljunk shooter it seems quite close to an rtype / gradius. Also if your hoping your son might get into the genre check out the other pixeljunk games.

Also theres The Rockin Andriod, Gundemonium Collection, which isnt Rtype but an hori bullethell, the updated PC version has released so that might be a better choice if you game on PC.

Theres also Sina Mora which is in development atm and is coming out for both the PS3 and 360

About the older classics like Rtype Delta, doesnt the PS3 have PS1 backwards compatabilty? So theres the option of going that route, dunno how expensive PAL PS1 shmups are though

Thanks for the suggestions - its just been set up so plenty or actual PS3 games to play for the moment.

Would be great if my son played shooters too- at the moment he's got Little Big Planet and Portal 2 to keep him busy. I'll take a look at pixel junk- looks pretty retro- good for a quick hour of blasting if i'm in the mood.

he's cute isn't he... always thought they look a little like the aliens from Independence Day.

and yeah being in Australia I am well versed in how lacking the ps store can be, I would definitely recommend creating a US and Japanese account.

Unfortunately you also have to contend with quite a bit of input lag with ps1 games on the ps3, with downloaded and disc based games

If you are looking to get you son into shmups I highly recommend Jamestown on the PC, Its very noob friendly, great 2D sprite work and has local co-op which allows players to stay in the game as long as one player is alive

haha man I find all those kinda primordial missing linky creatures freaky - wots even madder is the smaller variety that people think of as 'insects' are actually crustaceans - hence why you only really find them in moist areas (like under a rock etc.) -yeah they all freak me out; Giant Isopods, Pseudo Scorpions, Horseshoe Crabs, Coconut Crabs *shudder*

Yeah I definitely should set up another region account someday

PS3 doesn't have many options. From the top of my head:

Pixeljunk Sidescroller
Space Invaders Infinity Gene
Galaga Legions
After Burner Climax (rail shooter)
Super Stardust HD (arena shooter)
Beat Hazard Ultra (arena shooter)
Some PS1 shmups (R-Type Delta, Alpha Mission II and a few more)
Raystorm HD (JP store)
Zanac Neo (JP store)

I wouldn't call Pixeljunk Shooter a shmup, you fly around searching for little guys to rescue and find the exit later. Very different from a typical shmup.

If we're gonna mention rail shooters, then there's also Rez and the sequel Child Of Eden 8)

Actually, this brings up a question - when you download PS1 games from PSN, does the original hardware region locking scheme apply or can you use the game on any region PS3 like pretty much any other PSN download? I've never actually tried purchasing a PS1 game from a different region PSN account... last I checked, R-Type Delta was still available on the US store.

But yes, if you have access to the US PSN store, the Gundemonium Collection and a few other things from Rockin' Android are available, like Acceleration of Suguri (seems to be a versus style shooter similar to Senko no Ronde from what little I've played of it). Also, if you're expanding the search to rail shooters, I suppose Child of Eden (retail) would fall into that category as well.

I wasn't aware that Rez was on PSN, though... Rez HD came out on XBLA in 2008 and it looks like it was at least under consideration for PSN in early 2010 but I can't find evidence that anything came of it.

I'm in N.Ireland and have a spare space on a Japanese account with Don Pachi, DoDon Pachi, R-Type Delta, Shien Ryu and Einhander.
It'll cost ya £10, though.

A playstation network account can be activated on 5 ps3s, once you reach that number no more activating that account on any more machines, until you deactivate one of said 5 ps3s

If you are logged on to an account and someone else signs in to the same account from elsewhere, you are booted from the network. which would give rise to awesome booting each other from the playstation network battles... or something...
