Yeah, except with character and without some 3D, polygonal backgrounds.
And like BrianC, I consider Astro Boy to be more of a platformer/action game than a run'n gunner, considering the closest thing to bullets you get is a laser. Astro Boy's in my Top 10 games of all time, but not as a r'ng. I consider Ghouls 'n Ghosts to be a platformer as well, but to each his own.
Forgot about Switchblade 2 on Amiga, decent in it's day, not played it forever though. Hawkeye on C64 was fun. And the original and Super Shinobi's of course. Classics.
