What are the Dip Switch settings for Thunder Dragon PCB?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

The above topic says it all. If you can provide a link to the entire Thunder Dragon PCB manual, that'd be even better. Tecmo did handle the distribution of Thunder Dragon PCB kits Stateside back in 1991. Since the Thunder Dragon PCB is a single layer PCB by itself, it is quite heavy with all those socketed chips in place. Surely, NMK could've made it smaller and more compact by utilizing a two layered PCB setup if they wanted to (i.e. motherboard and riser board setup). ^_~

And what do the NMK developer intials stand for btw?

Thanks in advance...

Where on the board itself do I find the dip switch settings? Sorry to ask, but I'm a newbie. This is the first PCB I've bought for my cabinet.

I see on the link someone else provided there is a switch to flip the image. When I installed my board this evening the image was upside down!

In addition none of the buttons seemed to work. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?

Just locate the dipswitch to flip the screen rightside up and you're good to go.

Enable test mode and check to see if the 8-way digital based joystick and the two push buttons are registering correctly. If not, check the wiring to see if anything's loose and fix it. Recheck again to see if everything is working properly.

Clean the Jamma edge interface on the Thunder Dragon PCB with a kneadable gray-colored art eraser (you can buy it at an art store) on both sides until they're nice and shiny. Using a Q-Tip dipped in some rubbing alcohol and get those edge contacts super shiny and replug it back into the Jamma harness to see if that gets the buttons working again. The contacts are either going to be gold or silver on a typical Jamma PCB. Most used PCBs, the previous owner or arcade operator probably has neglected to clean the Jamma edge interface on said PCB, so if it's super grimy and filthy, best to get 'em clean & super shiny so that it does work properly when booted up.

The problem I'm having is actually locating the dip switches on the PCB. I don't know what I'm looking for! I was told the switches themselves are white and usually sit in a blue box. I don't see anything of the like on the board.

The sample pic of your Thunder Dragon PCB clues me in, it's the two light-gray colored banks of eight seperate tiny white colored switches that are facing side by side from each other. One dip switch bank will be marked SW1 and the second one will be marked SW2 on most typical arcade PCBs. Of course, some PCBs don't have any dip switches whatsoever (as the game settings/difficulty are done on-screen via Operator's Menu setting).

If you look at the PCB with the Jamma edge facing up, look at the center of the PCB and slowly locate the two tiny bank of micro-switches located on the 1 o'clock position. Did you find them? The color of the outer box that the dip switches are encased in can vary: black, gray, red, blue, etc.

If you've found the SW1 bank of switches, the eighth one will flip the monitor's screen to your liking. Easy as pie.

I see them! Thank you so freakin' much!! I can't wait to get home and change the settings now.

BTW, that's the image of the board I just bought. I'm thinking after moving my machine up the stairs @ home some of the connecting wires have have been jostled loose. I'll double check all of the connections. Here's hope I can get this playable now!

I can't comprehend the enthusiasm you guys have for this unplayable kusoge, but go for it!!

I'm guessing Thunder Dragon 2 is much rarer?

I haven't had a chance to play it yet after finding the necessary dip switches, but I got the board for $30 bucks so even if it's not the greatest game it's something new for me to put in my cabinet.

Okay, $30 I can understand.

Regardless, the game is terrible. Undodgeable boss patterns everywhere, level design completely falls apart minutes in. The game hands out bombs like candy, so they probably understood what was wrong.

Thunder Dragon 2 is excellent, however! A balanced, Toaplan-style vert with some nice touches and the best announcer ever.
