Most difficult games you've played that's not a shumps?
1. Battle Toads - most frustrating platformer ever
2. Batman(nes)
3. The Adventure of Byou Billy - dumb play mechanics makes it hard
4. Devil May Cry 3 - Some of the boss are crazy hard
5. Ninja Gaiden seires
6. Persona- annoying rpg on the psx
Thats all I could think of at the momennt...

F-Zero GX's Story mode had me uttering various swears at one point. Might as well call it F-Zero AR (because you'll need an Action Replay if you want to unlock the Story Mode stuff without breaking your controller or Gamecube).
Dragon Warrior for NES was tedious and boring (also damn difficult to stay alive).

Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!

Play the Ghouls N Ghosts series, if any of the 3 games don't have you tearing your hair out after awhile..... you might be clinically dead.
Another old Capcom game that gives me fits is Trojan, enemies never stop respawning, and come from both directions, and sometimes from above, the game is passable, but seems unfair in spots.

Damn, i almost forgot about that game...but yea it was very hard but beatable. It was satisfying beating that game until a friend told me you have to beat it twice to get the better ending...but I said screw it, goin through it once is good enough for me.SheSaidDutch wrote:I agree 100% just from reading your post I was freaking out, I used to spend countless nights playing Super Ghouls N Ghosts when I used to stay over my counsins place.Bloodreign wrote:Play the Ghouls N Ghosts series, if any of the 3 games don't have you tearing your hair out after awhile..... you might be clinically dead..

Until I saw Ben Shinobi's replay of Super Ghouls and Ghosts, I wasn't sure it was possible. That game is maddeningly hard. Those red gargoyles with the unpredictable AI drive me crazy. And you have to go through the game twice to really beat it! Yeah, it's beatable for sure, but not "perfectly beatable" in my book.Specineff wrote:Ghosts and Goblins is quite unfair, but Super Ghouls and Ghosts is perfectly beatable.
I've been finding Metal Slug 3 challenging lately. I still can't believe SNK didn't add in life extends. It kinda makes going for score pointless, as in shmups I usually concentrate on score in order to gather some extra lives. But then again, getting a high score is always cool so it's not really pointless. I just want some more lives as a reward.
Wouldn't say unfair, when the Capcom Generations originlly came out I could reach the last stage consistently after some practise. Never finished the fucker though, and no way would I go for it twice. The SNES game was also really well designed, and the recent GBA update was enjoyable as well, some cool new stages in there.Ghosts and Goblins is quite unfair, but Super Ghouls and Ghosts is perfectly beatable.
Hardesr non shooter I ever played were the old Dynamix games on C64/Spectrum if anyone remembers those - Army Moves and Navy Moves to name but two. Enjoyable, but absolute arseholes and quite unfair in places. And I remember C64 Bruce Lee (easiest game of all time) being ported to some Atari machine, where they tweaked the AI of your enemies so they'd home in and kick fuck outta you constantly. Most annoying.
More recently it would be DMC3, bbut I also find it tedious and have no desire to improve, or Metal Arms on Xbox was a toughie.
F-Zero GX is wicked hard, but from what I heard, it actually isn't impossible to beat. It takes a lot of patience, skill, and memorization to try and beat the game. I'm no expert and I die constantly, but, for some strange reason, I still like the game quite a bit.Dewclaw wrote:F-Zero GX was impossible, I gave up on it. Chakan for the genesis was just plain unfair. Contra Shattered Soldier was also really difficult, but doable.
The original Turrican is quite hard. Part of it is due to the fact that there are no audible damage indicators and the fact that you don't get knocked back when hit.

Count me in for Super Ghouls'N Ghosts also. One of my all time favorites.
Despite the game having what I consider to be a design flaw. You see like many platformers every time you get hit in the game you go flying in the opposite direction losing control for a few seconds. Not so much a big deal is falling off a cliff as is falling into a weapon that is not wanted and getting stuck having to use it. Such as anything else besides the daggar or arrows on the first loop and especially the goddess bracelet on the second loop which becomes more difficult to get after the first level. There is nothing quite like losing the weapon you need to defeat the final boss Sardius and getting something like the scythe or some other lame weapon.
Despite this I'll probably end up losing my armor sometime and want to replace it to get a more powerfull further reaching attack for the goddess bracelet but the best way to avoid the unwanted weapon is to just not open the chests and that means no armor either despite armor being more likely to show up in certain chest locations.
Also I just wanted to tell anyone before they have to find out the hard way. Those red demons do indeed have well programmed A.I. and if you don't get them right off the bat it will take some time to set them up to get hit without arrows especially. This would not be such a big deal if the levels did not have a TIME LIMIT.
In final section of level 7 there are 2 or 3 of the red demons to deal with and 2 gate guardians. On top of that the goddess bracelet is one of the worst weapons to use against many of the enemies in the level. If I do get this far on the second loop I always end running out of time while fighting the second gate guardian before Sardius.
I do also like the other 2 games in the series but despite having less slowdown I enjoy the margin for error that the double jump offers in Super Ghouls'N Ghosts.

Deep fighter Dreamcast: dam hard submarine adventure similar to descent, actually a good game had a lot of mind bending puzzles involving towing fish, transporting radioactive materials, mirrors and lasers(hard when theres 20! to adjust individually in a maze) tough little game.
fur fighters dreamcast: I don't know whether its really that hard just took a long time to beat and I never really knew where the hell I was going,
MDk 2: toughest last boss I've ever played hard brilliant game.
ecco the dolphin dotf. challengine to say the least.
Guilty Gear X. How the fukk do you beat dizzy.
alone in the dark 4. Hardest survival horror there is.
Shadow dancer: Still stuck on union lizard.
Daytona USA 2001: bloody hard championship mode
Sega GT: those works races and that race in the unlimited series never could build a car to beat the venom rs custom, always was 4 mph hour faster than me on the last track couldn't catch him with adjusted gear ratios.
House of dead 1: only difficult light gun game in series.
Dynamite heady: had many hard parts even the bonus games but last boss was a real killer.
Evolution 1 last boss: only rpg boss I've not beaten in first try insanely powerful attacks. 2 rounds no healing everyones dead and 2 ultimate attacks kill you anyway.
Shining force 3 premium disc battle 8: dark dragon and dark sol tear your team apart.

I agree with this. It's the one addition I would make to the Slug series. Some sections are so difficult that you just feel like you deserve an extra live for having made it that far. In Slug 1, for instance (easiest of the series), I usually just reset if I die before the final mission, because as in all Slug games, shit just gets out of control by the end. It's only because the Slug series is so devoid of cheap shots that this omission is acceptable.I still can't believe SNK didn't add in life extends. Battletoads (NES) and The Immortal (NES) are always the two that comes to mind.
And Colony Wars Vengeance is one of the most difficult games I ended up finishing.
F-Zero GX Story mode is insane. I finished Normal, Hard and 4 chapters on Very Hard. It would be cool as just a challenge, but the obligation to play it to unlock the arcade ships is annoying. But GP mode is fantastic, the Master difficulty is perfect.

- Another hard game for me is the original Zelda without a walkthrough. When I played it many years ago I used the NES strategy guide that came with the Nintendo Power subscription all those years ago. How does someone know to use the candle to burn that particular bush that is the same as the dozens of other bushes around it?

- I always have trouble with Ninja Gaiden II also.

Spelunker (Atari 8-bit)
Very hard and occasionally unfair platformer, but addictive.
Any modern computer chess program (is unbeatable to me)
Metal Slug Series
Ghosts & Goblins (I'm better at Super Ghouls and Ghosts, except I
can't do the last levels onthe 2nd loop with the Goddess Bracelet! I
only knowhow to play with the doublecorssbow...)
Chaos Strikes Back (ST/Amiga RPG)
Sequel to Dungeon Master. Very confusing map and brutal enemies.
I think Deadly Towers for the NES was pretty hard, but I may be
confusing it with another game...
Most text adventure games were pretty hard back in the day.
The Enchanter/Sorcerer/Spellbreaker series was especially tough.

I probably just suck, but I remember the later levels of Snake Rattle n' Roll being total bitches. Then again, I haven't played that game in years, so maybe it's not nearly as hard as I remember it.
1.) Looking up info from a guide
2.) Bombing/pushing/burning random things to reveal hidden entrances
3.) Skipping 1.) and 2.) because you've played the game 50 times and already know where to go
That's why I don't understand how the game ever became a classic. I loved it as a kid, but looking back, the "exploration" is really just a combination of the following:IlMrm wrote:How does someone know to use the candle to burn that particular bush that is the same as the dozens of other bushes around it?
