How could it be any better than the Gantz, Avatar, or Dragon Ball live action movies?
Do you want to know why Ghostbusters III must happen, no matter how awful? Ernie Hudson was in Dragon Ball Evolution. Do it for Ernie.
Oh, and in case you were worried, they do indeed plan to make a new American Godzilla flick.
(I'm hesitant to even give the new Torchwood season a try.)

PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.

Kind of like what they did with The War of the Worlds setting it in modern day America rather than victorian England, like the source material.kid aphex wrote:Answer?: Neo New York---9/11 references and everything. check out the leaked script, then kill yourself.
I hate Hollywood and it's obvious lack of respect for source material.

it's more to do with the amount of money at stake. any self-respecting film fan (although this could be applied to any other medium) knows that the bigger the franchise/ip, and the more money that is at stake, the less there will be in terms of innovation and risk-taking.Leader Bee wrote:Kind of like what they did with The War of the Worlds setting it in modern day America rather than victorian England, like the source material.kid aphex wrote:Answer?: Neo New York---9/11 references and everything. check out the leaked script, then kill yourself.

catering for the average american, who couldn't care less about the original setting, allows the film-makers to target the largest (and most common) denominator, and make the most money as a consequence.
but why stop at just hollywood? even in other aspects of commerce and society, we see the same problem arising, with blandness and mediocrity being celebrated.
not mentioning any names/games/forums/companies...
edit: personally, i'd be asking myself the question as to why k otomo even allowed his baby to be raped by the hollywood machine.
editx2: my bad. not sure as to the reasons why k otomo approved of the project, but this little interview with david fincher is worth a read - just to realise that it isn't always the script-writers/directors who are at fault.

Interesting, we didn't get that one here. The first Anime VHS distributor we got were Island World Video who handled a lot of world cinema and independent stuff. I've still got my original Akira VHS from them (signed by Cam Clarke no less) which came out prior to Manga, Pioneer labels etc.kid aphex wrote:http://youtu.be/d3fQv395RgM (only loosely related...but I thought some of us older folk would appreciate it)
I was introduced to manga through the comic book scene and was collecting the Marvel Akira colorisations when I discovered the movie. I think I was about 9 yrs old at the time. Wow.
When the Manga label launched, this is the one most guys in the UK will remember (Uh!)

This thread just reminded me, is the Hollywood "Neon Genesis Evangelion" movie still going ahead? Wasn't there some dispute between Gainax and A.D Vision over acceptance of payment for the live-action rights to the franchise?

I heard Weta Workshop were involved but this was some time ago. All the material that i've seen has surmounted to nothing more than concept art and that Auska Langley will be known as Kate Rose.

It's not going to mangle the source material any more than the 1988 flick, is it?

lol, touche. still, the movie was made by otomo. more hard work and effort went into its crafting than any movie i've seen or heard of since. so the disparity between manga/anime isn't very offensive to meObiwanshinobi wrote:It's not going to mangle the source material any more than the 1988 flick, is it?

Yeah, the movie deviated so far from the manga. Most people don't know that in the manga they raced tricycles and went to cosplay conventions every Saturday.Obiwanshinobi wrote:It's not going to mangle the source material any more than the 1988 flick, is it?

Otomo had no choice but to condense and cut the manga down, as it really only could have been done as a serialisation given the sheer amount of content. I think he did the right thing as a director by reinventing the film rather than attempt to compact the books, keeping the most important aspects of the narrative.

It's about "realizing their actuality." And judging by the look on Jane's face, she's realized it a couple of times already.

i think mine is island world video too. as for collecting akira, i bought issue 3 on a whim in a comic shop in croydon when i was about 14. that issue started my short-lived japanese comic and anime craze.Skykid wrote:Interesting, we didn't get that one here. The live-action film of Fist of The North Star (circa 1995) was utter trash. The anime series of the same name is the one to watch indeed.

AD Vision is dead. It splintered off into different sub-companies. I don't know who owns the English rights to Eva.Rebel Ninja wrote:This thread just reminded me, is the Hollywood "Neon Genesis Evangelion" movie still going ahead? I remember there was also supposed to be talks of a live-action Robotech or Macross movie, which would suck too.
I remember way long ago there was rumors of somebody doing a Mai the Psychic Girl movie too, by James Cameron or somebody (I don't think it was Spielburg).

It's stupid to make anime where the characters have crazy powers (and hair) into live-action, but I think one of Robotech/Macross could work. It just needs to be handled by someone like Ronald Moore instead of someone like George Lucas. I might even settle for Chris Roberts.

Re: Akira the movie green lighted
Once someone made a thread here that Japanese make crappy live action movies. So making a Western live action movie based on a Japanese anime seems like a bad idea. There are some directors that could pull it off, but unfortunately those directors rarely indulge in cult material unless they created it as initial early works.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Am I the only one who didn't think Akira was a good movie? The animation was pretty nice for anime standards, but the story never pulled me in.
On the side note: A movie adaptation could be pretty cool, and I don't think the setting being in New York would really ruin the movie.
