I want to make my 360, look like it's SD, on an LCD. How?

Post by evil_ash_xero »

OK, this is kinda bothering me. The XBLA versions of Guwange, Ketsui, Guardian Heroes(this one, especially), Resident Evil 4, Radiant Silvergun...etc... These games just don't look their best on an HDTV(imho).
I hook them up to my SDTV, and they look nice.

I have a computer monitor, that I use. It only goes up to 720. I also have an XRGB 3. It's kind of in retirement, at the moment, since I have all the old stuff hooked up to a new SDTV.
Can I hook the 360 into the XRGB 3, and do some scanline magic?

Are scanlines enough? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And I would like to not have to purchase a different monitor for this. Maybe an "in between"...but lag would be NOT A GOOD THING.

This would be so great, because they don't need THAT much work, to look better. It's not like hooking a PS2 into an XRGB 3. That can kind of be hit and miss. Just some scanlines, and maybe a little other scaling magic. I dunno. I know you guys got the answers.

I really hate the new gen of TVs. I'm totally serious.

Tate the TV (just for the shoot'em ups, either the LCD or the PC CRT), use VGA from the 360, set to 480p resolution only, add a SLG3000. As good as it gets. I don't see the need to switch the CRT though. The reduction in resolution plus SLG3000 adds enough CRT-look, so it should look fine on a LCD as well.

You're not the only one. To my eyes a SD/CRT image has a certain texture, like a picture on canvas, but HDTV just seems too flat. I know I'm in a minority, but I know what I like.

I can vouch for fudoh's suggestion of VGA out at 480p into an SLG3000. I even like to watch DVDs with this setup

Yeah beyond these you'll start deviating from your wish list with 'how best to show your 360 on an actual crt'.

I'd love someone to make a low lag scaler with some decent filters/shaders a la latest mame versions but it's unlikely anyone will bother even if it could be done with no/minimal lag. It'd be interesting if someone developed a pass through that could be tweaked/updated with a pc, but again such a market would be very minimal.

To be honest with any current scaler all you'll be doing is sharpening your scanlined image, which probably isn't the crt feel you're after...

Well, sorry, but I don't want to read through every topic here. It's a bit much, for one specific goal.

Anyway, thanks for the advice guys. I ordered one, and I'll let you know if it gets the yay or nay for me. I got one with the clear casing. ooh.

Ah, but doesn't setting the 360 into 480, make it go into "non-widescreen" mode?

And won't this make certain games, such as RE 4, and Guardian Heroes, seem extra small? Any way around that?

most 360 games have both widescreen and standard aspect ratios available, or if you can put the xbox in 848x480 and still get the same scanlines from the SLG (i think? i can check later)

looks like i spoke too soon, the 848x480 setting isn't actually supported by the SLG but if you set the screen resolution to 640x480 you can change the screen format between Standard and Widescreen and still keep your scanlines. hope this helps.
