Lately I've been listening to Daioujou tracks... Manabu Namiki really nailed this one and Ketsui.
The 2009 arrange album is great, the character select track is epic.
Listening to random arrangements on youtube, I found a 8:07 min Last Boss theme (Kouryuu), which is much better than the one on the album by Motoi Sakuraba. I wonder where did it come from, I looked for the DOJ/Espgaluda remix album and it's not from it because of the track lenght.

Thanks for posting this, man... I didn't know about this soundtrack, just heard it and I'm very impressed. Too bad it doesn't have a Stab and Stomp remix, or am I missing a track?

Could it be by Yuji Takenouchi? He did some remixing for Cave.

Boy, I have a lot of favorite music...

First off, everything from Einhänder. The tracks that stand out the most for me are...
[IMPATIENCE] -Stage6 #1 Stratosphere-
[THERMOSPHERE] -Stage6 #2 Versus Schwarz Geist-
[MADNESS] -Stage5 #2 Versus Gestell-
[BLOODY BATTLE] -Against a Large Enemy Type 2-

Also, everything from HELLSINKER, but Segment 7 and Segment 3 LEAD are my overall favorites.

The games made by Siter Skain has awesome music everywhere, so I can't list them all (That would be too many to count!), but Heritage Memory (From Kamui) and Despair - Cancer (from RefleX) are my top favorites.

And I might as well make a list for other music that made it to my favorites:
DoDonPachi - Stage 1 & 4
Ketsui - NO REMORSE
Battle Garegga - Stab and Stomp! (Of course I'll be listing this!)
Battle Garegga - Erupter
Everything from Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga, especially Space Battleship 130-33ki for the former and Reality for the latter.
Soukyugurentai - Descent Into the Sea of Clouds
Thunder Force III - His Behavior Inspired Us with Distrust
Thunder Force IV - Evil Destroyer
Psyvariar - Gluon

I would be adding more to this list, but that's it for now.

I found out that Einhander has an arranged album. It's pretty fantastic, and I liked the arrangement of Thermosphere.

I'm going to listen to more tracks from that album to see if it interests me.

EDIT: The arranged version of Assault might be my favorite song from that album.

Anything from Hisayoshi Ogura and Zuntata in general. His "DNA Sound" is very unique and captures the feeling of Darius perfectly. Especially stuff from G-Darius like Kimera II and Adam. :)

my favorite is by far Thunderforce III...every song is is completely catchy, awesome and gets your pumped... I enjoy the soundtrack as a whole way better than IV actually. They're both great.. but I'm just surprised more people don't seem to dig III as much.

I completely agree with you. I prefer TFIII > TFIV as well because of the beats being more hardcore sounding and fast-paced. Definitely my favorite Genny soundtrack.

All of the stuff off of the Live Zuntata albums. Never get tired of them rocking out.

Also I'd like to mention Cotton's music. Even the Cotton game on Dreamcast has some catchy tunes.

Border Down's soundtrack is too amazing as well.

What shmup has your favorite soundtrack? Any particular track you find to represent what you think shmup music should sound like? I'm curious as to what kind of music people associate with the genre, or at least prefer in it.

I don't know if it's my all time favorite, but I fould I really like Border Down's, specifically this track

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9boFOGPISDg

Just kinda bummed out to realize I don't know of much else that sounds like it.

You need to play more Taito games. Composer Yack is/was a member of their in-house band ZUNTATA.

There's a topic hanging around, 'top 5 STG soundtracks' or something like that, might be a good place to get reccomendations.

For you I would reccomend G Darius. Outstanding soundtrack, very varied and atmospheric. I wish more STGs would go down this more 'esoteric' route of soundtrack design...

Thunderforce III probably has my favorite OST.

M.U.S.H.A., Thunderforce IV, G Darius, Gate of Thunder, Ikaruga, Espgaluda, The Touhou series, Batsugun...

Lots of great stuff out there.

Shmup music; it's strange but I'm sort of "forced" to love it all...I know I'm not the only one.

Lately I have been playing the devil out of Trizeal - for some reason the music is just infectious.

Shmup music is much better when it "pumps"; Thunderforce V's music does that; so, does Star Soldier (PS2, Gamecube).

One of my personal favorites is the music to Technosoft's Hyper Duel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GynLyX4yytU

R-Type Delta has its moments as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDLhMiQBDnY

As well as all the previous ones mentioned in this thread...

I think I see what you mean. There are some styles, such as Espgaluda's, that I normally don't listen to but can enjoy in connection with all the other elements of a game.

R-Type Delta and Ikaruga are good examples of music being tightly synchronized with the progression of the stage. Considering that stages are often short, fixed lengths in these games, it's surprising this isn't done more. Namiki kind of attempts it with some of the Cave soundtracks, but due to variable slowdown (or the continue timer ) it can get thrown off.

Hitoshi Sakimoto said this in an interview recently translated here, which I think is relevant:

"When you play a shooting game, you're focusing so much that time seems to go more slowly, and combined with small undulations in the flow of the music, as well as your attention being so focused on the screen, one's perception of the music can become very clear and sharp. I try to give players that experience with big dramatic shifts in the music as well. I know it sounds contradictory, but this is based off my personal experience playing shooting games... its very hard give a theoretical explanation."

Touhou 07: Perfect Cherry Blossom has some amazing points where the music syncs to the arrival of a boss or a 'calm' moment in the stage.

It's weird that only very rare examples of shmup music would actually fit in the kind of music I like and listen to, but nevertheless almost all of the soundtracks of the games I've played are highly listenable both in and out of game. Naturally, the better the music complements the action going on, the better everything will be. One of my favorite tracks is Time of End, from the final stage of RefleX:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hS1gjTPSdds

The entirety of the OST is simply amazing, but this one is perfect. Made even better when coupled with the final stage, one of the best things I have ever played.

Yeah, everything I listened from ZUNTATA is really great, even if a bit weird sometimes. Their work on Rayforce was awesome and I'm enjoying Darius Burst's soundtrack quite a lot.

The consistently elegiac tone and energy across the Alltynex Trilogy's games is an amazing complement to their settings and action. VGM mini-opera at its best. Sometimes there's just no substitute for a synth choir and hammering double-bass!
