sigma star saga 7.2 at gamespot
and to be honest it looks a lot of fun to me. they've criticised the shmup sections for being bland and repetitive and i really think that many people here are not going to enjoy it at all. however i'm viewing it as a good opportunity to train myself in the ways of horis. as has been said in various posts, i suck at horis tot he extreme, and hopefully the randomly thrown together enemies will help me develop the skills to avoid the old school aimed shots that snipe me every time.
what are your opinions?
oh and watch the video replay. the guy playing it really sucks ass. i don't think that there is a shot where he doesn't die at least once...

Of all places, gamespot shmup reviews are the last ones on earth i'll trust.
I mean, they gave mars matrix a whopping 6.9 ,einhander 7.9 and so on.
Any of these websites tend to underrate shmups, they really have no love for them so they can stick their reviews where the sun doesn't shine

More bullets,MORE!!!
They also gave Giga Wing a 4.4 and Gunbird 2 a 5.8. I should also mention Raystorm got a 7.8 and Thunderforce V got an 8.BUHA wrote:to be fair, they gave Souky a 8.2 and RSG a 9.0. also, Ikaruga got high scores for the DC and Gamecube.
Feedback will set you free.

Furthermore, in these reviews of Souky and RSG the authors go on about how great the analog control for Souky is. Pretty lame. What's even more pathetic is that they convinced me to go out and get an analog controller for my Saturn.Acid King wrote:They also gave Giga Wing a 4.4 and Gunbird 2 a 5.8. Yep. It's half mediocre shooter, half bland overworld exploration. I'd suggest holding off on purchases until a few trusted guinea pigs report back. This is one of those games that the tools on GameFAQs will defend vociferously despite it kind of sucking. Not worth the money, IMO.sethsez wrote:It's a western-developed game that's mostly RPG. As the NES version of Xevious was vastly inferior to the arcade original (although later games like Recca and Gun-Nac showed the NES could do much better), I have to agree with the aforementioned quote. The GBA could - and should - replicate the arcade much more faithfully with ease!BrianC wrote:The Gamespot review of the Classic NES Series Xevious for GBA was lame. Define "vastly inferior". It's not as good as the arcade, but IMO, the NES version does come close. The NES version doesn't look as good as the arcade, but it still looks good for NES, has decent sound, and the gameplay is still there too. There is a reason why Nintendo put it in the Famicom Mini/Classic NES Series. For the time it came out in Japan, it was one of the better ports of the game too. It definatly trumps the 7800 version and IMO, that's also a good port of the game. Yes, the GBA can probably do a closer to arcade Xevious, but that's not the purpose of the classic NES series.Stormwatch wrote:As the NES version of Xevious was vastly inferior to the arcade original (although later games like Recca and Gun-Nac showed the NES could do much better), I have to agree with the aforementioned quote. The info about Sigma Star does leave me a bit skeptical, though. I'm glad I got Mr. Driller Ace this month instead of waiting for it.
I think this is a pretty fun game. First and foremost, it's an RPG. I compare it to Sword of Vermillion where you have an RPG exploration screen and then a seperate combat screen. However, instead of being an overhead combat screen, it's a shooter screen. While the shooter screen certainly doesn't compare to a shooter game, it's at least twice as entertaining as a regular turn-based RPG battle.
All in all, I'm very pleased. If you guys bought this expecting a bullet-filled traditional shooter, then you must not have read any of the previews, watched any of the videos, or seen any of the screenshots released months before the games launched.

my thoughts exactly andi. it has always been known that there are mostly random shmup sections throughout and there's no way that they could make them as precise and bullet filled as normal shmups as the precision just can't be there. it looks fun as hell to me and i've just got to track it down....
Wait, wait, why couldn't there be the precision necessary to make these sequences fun, even with a minimal amount of bullets? There's no reason why these sequences had to have sloppy controls, or a hitbox bigger than your ship, or unwinnable situations. There's a way to make random sequences that are balanced and fun, and it sounds like WayForward simply missed the mark.sjewkestheloon wrote:my thoughts exactly andi. it has always been known that there are mostly random shmup sections throughout and there's no way that they could make them as precise and bullet filled as normal shmups as the precision just can't be there.
I think they are fun though. The only problem with control is that there isn't autofire (which is really only arguably a problem) and there is a button that you have to hold to move fast, the hitbox is the same size as your ship (although the ship is huge), and the unwinnable situations just require a different game play style - instead of not getting hit, you minimize getting hit.jiji wrote:Wait, wait, why couldn't there be the precision necessary to make these sequences fun, even with a minimal amount of bullets? Granted, when I heard about this game, I was more excited about playing another sci-fi RPG than another shooter. I think that most people on this board are disappointed because they expected something very different.

i like the game, the storyline is more engrossing than Golden Sun. as for the shooter sequences... i'm so beefed up (lvl 46, less than halfway into the game..) that unless i get the worst possible ship for a battle, there's no way i can die. :/ this game is a milestone though, first RPG/shmup since The Guardian Legend, albeit much easier than TGL. maybe more will follow in it's footsteps, but make a point to be challenging. either way, i like this game.

The characters in Golden Sun talk too damn much....as for SSS, I might get it just because it's one of those quirky titles. An Shmup-RPG? Sounds cool to me.Zweihander wrote::/ Golden Sun's a fun game, the storyline just didn;t grab me. SSS, on the other hand... >_< *suspense*BenT wrote:Reminder to self: Never play Golden Sun!
Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!
They all have boring, trite stories. Golden Sun is enjoyable because it has good puzzles and some great dungeons. If you play RPGs for plot, just read a damn book.Moogs wrote:And what's an RPG with a boring story?Zweihander wrote::/ Golden Sun's a fun game, the storyline just didn;t grab me. Useless.
