So I've finally got the Raiden Fighters series to run (despite the apparent "the video/sound emulation isn't 100% accurate" warning), and when I finished loading, this screen came out, saying something about it updating itself:
Finished the countdown, I restarted the game, and I can play it!
Anyway, my question is, what's the big idea behind this 999-countdown-for-"update" thingy? Also, anyone knows where should I go to check out details on how inaccurate the video/audio emulation of certain games are?
When you switch games it loads it into the video memory.
It does a countdown and then you have to replace jumpers and switch carts on the PCB motherboard. You then reset the game and it boots. I did this the other day with my Raiden Fighters 2 and Jet. Very useful if you can find working SPI carts. Now if only I can find a Viper Phase 1 New Version and Raiden Fighters 1 hehe
I never played a emulated Raiden Fighters So I would not know how accurate it is. I heard it plays ok though.
If you've been using older versions of MAME to play the Seibu SPI games, you must delete the NVRAM file for the specific SPI romset, then boot up the games again. You'll have to sit the five or so minutes while the game loads, but if you don't do this, the games will still have incorrect sound int the newer MAME versions.
Of course, if you have a lot of RAM in your computer, you can fire up multiple instances of MAME and have each boot up a single SPI game simultaneously. I recommend at least 1.5GB RAM.
And, yes, even Raiden Fighters 2 and Viper Phase 1 has almost correct sound!

10 minute load time just for audio
I find that hard to believe. I think it has something to do with video too.
Damn I never new about this, Alluro, thanks for the heads up, I tried it with my RF1 and VP1 rom, and damn, everything just about improved so much. Thanks again!
