Retro Gamer #15 at U.S. news stands...just 2 more til #17!
If you head on to your local Barnes & Noble or Borders bookstores, they both sell the U.K. produced "Retro Gamer' magazine that comes with a cool bonus CD-Rom disc filled with bitchin' fine retro gaming. As it is already known that the current #17 issue of Retro Gamer has plently of shmup games on the bonus CD-Rom...it hasn't appeared on U.S. bookstore shelves as of yet -- only #15 is currently available in the USA as of right now 7-05-2005.
So less than two months from now, issue #17 will eventually appear on U.S. shores. Be sure to look for it (if you want to play some more PC-based shmup titles)! ^_~

The disc will work with a US pc as there are no NTSC/PAL worries with the pc (I'm in the US and I've bought several titles from the UK that I couldn't find here, like The Reap). Retro Gamer's cover price is $12.99 and I think it is worth it, but then again I love reading about retro systems and seeing box art, ads, etc. If you are only getting it for the disc, take a look at what is on the disc and maybe that will help you decide (issue 15 only has emulators on the disc, which are freely downloadable anyway, so I found it one of the more disappointing discs they have had, content-wise). I couldn't wait for issue #17 to be released here, so I got it from the UK, which will work out to about $17 shipped, but at least I'll have the peace of mind that I won't have to worry about missing it on the stands (and it would probably cost more than $17 shipped from ebay at some point in the future)

I don´t remember any titles, but when I had a look at the contents a few days ago I decided not to buy it. I got the impression most of the games are downloadable freeware games. They are all (I think) imitations/homages of older shmups like R-Type. It also featured a Kenta Cho-game. My guess is you can find any of the games on google or shootthecore.

What do you expect, commercial versions of games? Unique shmups made just for the mag?dave4shmups wrote:Well that settles it, I'm not paying over 12 bucks for a game disc that has rehashes of older shmups, and shmups that you can download for free. Talk about lame, and a rip off!

And remember, there's, like, a nifty import games magazine included too.

I certainly didn't expect the original Angeraze. Even if it is just a demo, the fact that it's on the disk makes me want to get it.BenT wrote:What do you expect, commercial versions of games? Retro Gamer - one of the few decent mags around these days - has gone bankrupt folks, read it and weep...
RetroSurvival wrote:Live Publishing (publishers of the excellent Retro Gamer magazine) went into administration on Monday 22nd August.
The staff of Retro Gamer left the company, and no further issues of the magazine will be published. We're all very upset by the demise of Retro Gamer.
Unfortunately, Live also owed most of the freelancers money for articles that had either been published over the final few issues, or that had been written for inclusion in issue 19 or later. These articles will sadly never see the light of day in RG. However, all is not lost. A large group of RG freelancers have grouped together and created this web site and discussion board with the title of "Retro Survival." http://forum.retrosurvival.co.uk/ We plan to do two things here:
1. We are putting together a CD or DVD that will contain all of the unpublished articles that had been written for RG. It will also contain a large number of articles from past issues of Retro Gamer, many of which are substantially larger than the versions that made it into print. We hope that the disc will be a popular item and are sure that it'll be packed with fantastic retro material both old and new.
We are planning to sell this for a low price (perhaps about the same as an issue of RG itself) once it's ready and hope that lots of you will be interested in purchasing a copy. All proceeds from the disc will be put towards paying the RG freelancers the money that they were owed by Live Publishing.

For folks who were disappointed by the cancellation of Retro Gamer, one of the few magazines mostly dedicated to 2D gaming... good news of sorts: word is out that a brand new Retro Gamer magazine will be making its premier from a new publisher soon, with some combined talent from the original Retro Gamer magazine & the Retro section of GamesTM UK. Hopefully we'll see some nice shmup-related features from this new team.

I completely missed this thread the first time around.
I work at the company that used to print Retro Gamer, I remeber when Live Publishing got into bother in the middle of July and cancelled all their work with us. They still owe us money
There's always a chance that these titles might get picked up/absorbed by another publisher when this happens and given the price they get away with charging for this, I'm surprised it didn't happen straight away.
