Where to read old game magazine reviews??...

Post by dave4shmups »

I'm thinking that there's gotta be a website(s) where, for example, you can read old Gamepro reviews-or old game reviews from other game magazines that have been around for a while, and do so legally. I'm talking about reviews from the late 1980's through the early to mid 1990's.

Hall of Light has a lot of links to old magazine reviews but it seems to be all Amiga based.
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

Thanks! You'd think that gaming magazines would come out with apps of some sort for smart phones and tablets where you could download old issues. IMO, they would certainly make money off of them.

I used to love reading GameFan back in the early to mid-90s. They also used to carry some ads for anime, which I thought was far out at the time - nobody advertised anime in 1992! 8)

Not to mention the Shooting Alley section was an ol' favorite of mine within the hallowed pages of Gamefan. With coverage of nothing but Japanese arcade shmup titles, something that no other American gaming magazine covered (like GamePro & Electronic Gaming Monthly). The very last issue of Gamefan was released in December of 2000.

I PM'ed the Gamefan editor a few years back when he popped up to comment on a shmups thread related to Shooting Alley section of GF & asked him if he was planning to do some more arcade shmup PCB articles like Success' Psyvariar Medium Unit and he had plans to do so (but when the GF mag fizzled, it wasn't meant to be). Considering that Success produced both shmup titles of Taito G-Cards PsyMU & Psyvariar Revision running on the Taito G-Net arcade hardware which were released in the Japanese game centers March 2000 & September 2000 respectively -- it would've been cool to see some Shooting Alley article coverage of them both.

I've been trying to find reviews of old Genesis reviews (the 1989-1990 era). Anyone have a good collection of old EGM or GamePro reviews?

Found a site that has downloadable scans of many old magazines like Gamepro and EGM (sadly no Gamefan). I think it's probably infringing on a copyright or two, so I can't link it here.

But if one were to, say, google a random term like "retromags" maybe they would find something.

Yeah. I used to love reading their "Graveyard" section, where they wrote about sleeper hit games. There was something about this magazine that looked and read better than GamePro and EGM (and I'm not just referring to their thick and glossy paper stock). They were also partly responsible for me choosing to buy shoot-'em-ups when I got a SNES (Super R-Type, Gradius, Phalanx, etc). I've still yet to see a publication that oozes enthusiasm for oft-ignored game genres 8)

Diehard Gamefan was my sanctuary when I was a tyke. I still have my collection to this day and have even managed to score second copies of most issues. Alas, I was never able to complete my collection. However, I have recently bumped into a torrent that gathers most of the elusive issues from vol. 1, 2, and 3 over on Underground Gamer. I followed all of Dave's publishing ventures after that but none of them ever came close to capturing the spirit of the original Gamefan, not even the ex-staffer run Hardcore Gamer with it's nice Wolfinger art. The newly resurrected Gamefan is a complete joke, btw.

I was also a fan of Video Games & Computer Entertainment back then. The issue with Military Madness on the cover was my very first ever video game mag purchase, I still remember finding it in the grocery store and convincing my dad to buy it for me. Without that mag I would have never known about some of the more awesome, obscure titles like Shadow of the Beast & It Came From The Desert. I'd looooooovvvvee to find a collection of those lazing about the internet somewhere.

I've actually been downloading quite a bit of old gaming pubs lately, such as collections of Crash (because I was deprived of such greatness here in the states) and Nintendo Power (for purely sentimental reasons). Not to mention the frickin' AMAZING Retro Gamer eMag loads that you can find on Demonoid or pretty much anywhere around the net.

BEST. MAGAZINE. EVER.

Load 3 was just released in Imagine Publishing's shop so I'm hoping to receive that soon. I've also found out recently that Retro Gamer and it's more modern gaming focused sister publication, gamesTM have popped up as an app for iPhone/iPad. The newest issue featuring Dark Souls on the cover is of the finest quality I've seen from any mag in years. Of course, I have been reading shitty ole' Game Informer ever since some buttnut at Gamestop typically charged a subscription to my debit card without asking. At any rate it's great that we have an alternate method of getting the goods now since without a U.S. distributor a year subscription for either magazine runs at a ridiculous $137.

EDIT - Nice! Retromags had the VG&CE issue I was talking about!

I still have a complete collection of Super Play. Best gaming mag that ever existed, with Zzap64 just behind.

I concur (not with the Zzap64, didn't read it). I still need 6 issues to complete my set, it's getting annoying.
