not multiplayer. Kid accused me of leaderboard hacking out of nowhere, haha.

Also, just broke 10m on Very Hard story and got the 1cc on Hard Arcade last night :3

Is there a guide somewhere that shows all the locations of the Story Mode Merry bonus? I've been using Google to translate the Ben Shinobi guide but it seems to be missing a lot of the story mode ones. How do you get the one at the 3E boss?

There's one on youtube, though the quality is really bad, but you can still make out where they are.

One thing I've noticed with the 4E midboss is that on the XBLA version, you can't sit at the bottom of the screen to avoid the homing lasers, while in the Saturn version, you could.
Had a nice scoring run through the stage4 route ended by a handslip on the joystick sending me into the blocks at the beginning of 4E. How frustrating. -_-;;

I think I bit it on stone like 3 or 4 times before actually eeking out a clear. It's inevitable.

Forgive me for not reading through everything, but what type of controller is everyone using? I'm going to end up spraining my thumb playing with the 360 pad.

I'm using a Xconverter, hooked into a Keio converter, using a Saturn pad.

Works great.

360 pad, works great :P I actually think it isn't too bad for shmups unless you have a broken one, just for fighters (small deadzone, easy diagonals)

Should get the 1cc if I go for it, broke 10mil after a week of playing but havent played since then.

Well, since evil_ash_xero doesn't really play these games competitively, he may as well not notice 1-2 frames of lag from that setup, fwiw.

Adding the Keio converter sounds suspect, but doesn't the Xconverter add virtually no lag at all?

Playing this game too btw, damn hard it is, but I'm slowly getting it.

Well, it doesn't seem it. I could always just try it out with the PS2 pad, by itself, and then it with the Saturn pad, to see if there's a difference.
I've read that both of these converters have no lag, but chained together...maybe.

And no, I don't really play competitively, but I am pretty anal about lag.

EDIT: Just tried it out. Seems like there might be a frame or so. Yep.

Lag aside, I'm enjoying online multiplayer way more than single player. Almost made it to Xiga with one of the higher ranking (xbla only, of course) Japanese players. Even playing with people who don't know the chains is fun; have to wing it based on what they blow up.

Probably doesn't help that I'm sick to death of breaking 11m in stage 4 only to screw up 5 every time.

Just had three runs in a row where a turret or bullet happened to be at the perfect point to hit me in the tiny spot you can sit in when both sides of the stage 5 battleship close. Dumb RNG shenanigans :<

Edit: Make that 4 times in a row. WTF

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

This doesn't have arcade stick support?

Not everyone has a stick.

And as I've mentioned before, I use the 360 d-pad, and it's pretty much fine. I can still blame myself for the mistakes since I find I can still do inputs accurately.

Now, if I were to ever play a fighting game, I would want a stick. But I don't have any fighting games at the moment for 360 cause I'm just not interested in them mostly. I guess it's an issue with SotN too, but I don't play Richter Mode, and I can do Alucard's spells with the stick on the controller.

Well have you given a proper arcade stick a try? I used to think it didn't matter, but after using a seimitsu stick I just couldn't go back to pads. The only pad that I still find passable is the Saturn pad. I think another plus is that you can use it on multiple platforms, with pads (save the saturn adapters) you have to get used to new and often times poorly designed d-pads every time you switch to a new console.

Saturn Pad for shmups = easier tapping, precise movement, portable, god's controller

Stick for fighters = More fun, easier to do certain commands (double hadokuen to the right is hard on a pad), buttons on fingertips, CLICKCLICKCLICKCLICK

Those are my thoughts anyways. I'm way off topic.

After suffering from an illness including constant headaches this past 3-4 months and staying away from shmups (and challenge gaming in general) due to lack of motivation, im now finding myself getting into this game since the short stages makes practice more rewarding.

Just a quick question or 2

Do the 4 secondary weapons level up? and if so is it the same way as the 3 primary weapons ie damaging enemies counts?

As a rule of thumb what level do my weapons need to be for survival play? ie half way point & near the end?

Your regular weapons level up, your secondary levels just go off of your primaries. Only levels you have to worry about are A, B, and C.

I haven't played in a while, so I'm just going off of memory, but I chain stage 3 and 2, and only kind of half ass 5. Usually my A is around 19 or so by Xigas and my C is around 22 or 23. That's more than good enough to get by, and you could probably do it with less.

If you're playing arcade mode and you're taking the stage 2 path, the single must important place to chain is the merry chain (red, blue, yellow yellow yellow) while you're chasing that one boss through the corridors. Keep a full sword meter incase you get trapped in the walls so you can get out of it and keep the chain going. It's worth such a big amount of points, if you're not chaining much else, it should knock your levels up a few.
-------------------

As an aside, Radiant Silvergun kind of came to XBLA and went. Not many people here seem to have cared. I don't like the forced letterbox and all that, I get it. But I love the game itself.

What is it about RSG that people who like other shmups tend to dislike? Is it color based chaining? It's rigid, sure, but so are most scoring systems when you get to a certain point.

Ah thx. Do the secondaries level up at the same rate as the primaries? Im just wondering if its better to use my primary shots most of the time and only use secondaries when I have to.

Edit thx for the merry chain tip, ill keep it in mind

Dunno mate, maybe that its more of a memoriser from the get go than many bullet hells which allows for folk to start off casually.

Since im one of the more casual folk here (nothing wrong with casual play as long as its done with the correct mindset) I often play a shmup casually with no credit feeding at first and slowly get into more deeper play the longer I play it. Thats why I found RSG a bit of a turn off when I first bought it (although i was in the worst part of my sickness at that time)

Before I would pick out a shmup and keep at it until I got a 1CC or burnt out, but after getting a 360 and buying too many games ive just been playing the games when the feeling grabs me. I hope to get back into my old style of play soon.

edit THX Icarus, ill be sure to use those vids as a point of reference

TrevHead (TVR) wrote:Ah thx. Do the secondaries level up at the same rate as the primaries?
Any experience gained by a secondary weapon is split between the primary weapons that make it up - Back-Wide (A+C) will give half to Vulcan (A) and half to Spread (C) for example; Sword (A+B+C) gives 33% each to the primary weapons.
For effective levelling, use only primary weapons where possible. Secondaries are situational weapons.
