[solved] Looking for a shump from my early years !

Post by Galdor »

Hi !

I'm searching a shump I've been playing when I was 8, before my parents eventually forbid me from playing it, 'cause it's unethical to burn down other people's homes... parents are parents I guess ;)

So right now I'm looking for the name of this game, which I loved. However I'm having trouble to find it by myself so I was thinking you might help me !
I have only little memory from it but I'll try to be as specific as possible :
- it is a top-down 2D shooter (not 2.5D from what I recall - I mean it may use sprites to generate 3D-like effects but no meshes)
- you control a dogfighter that looks recent but not too sci-Fi
- you can choose your equipment. Money collected from shooting down ennemy planes or destroying ennemy buildings is used for upgrading
- you can choose between 4 to 5 worlds. The first one is kind of pacific islands. The last one is "moon". One of them is a tropical forest (second ?)
- the first world is easier than the last one. When you complete a level in one world, you gain access to the next level of this world but can't play again it's previous levels (in order to prevent players from grinding and gain easy money). For instance, you might want to complete levels 1 to 5 of world 1. But as lvl 6 is too tricky with your actual equipment you'll be completing lvl 1 of the last world, which is harder than lvl1 of world 1 but easier to lvl6 of world 1 (for instance, I do not remember the details)
- the main menu is a bit more sophisticated than a simple list of options : you have to click an area of the screen which represents something in particular (e.g. click on a picture of the garage to make upgrades, click on the mission file to start playing, etc - might be organised in a different way, I don't remember precisely)

So if you know a shump that is similar to this description please post a reply !

Your parents did good forbidding you to play this. It's rubbish.
Do yourself a favor and play something else. There are plenty of really good shmups around.
Raptor is more or less as crap as they come.

For a good free shmup I suggest Chorensha68k.

Download the uppermost file. Also make sure to rightclick the exe, select properties and set it to Windows 98/Me under Compatibility. This will solve eventual problems with the sound.

I hope you are being sarcastic. Or well, perhaps some people really like extremely bad game design.
Each to their own

Wether it's good or bad, I have to play it again : along with Sega Rally, it is the game I have been most yearning to play for years now (12 years actually).
I'll figure out if I like it or not as I am now once I'll have given it a shot, but all I know is that I have some really good memories of it !
@ptoing : Anyway, I'll have a look on your link too some time

Cheers
